I'm one of those bad houseguests that doesn't know when to leave

We had lived in North Carolina for six weeks when my husband was deployed to Saudi Arabia. Since I was almost three months pregnant with twins and had not met anyone in our new town, my father flew down to drive me the 500 miles back to live with him and my step-mother until my husband returned.

We had not even unpacked in our new house. I threw what few maternity clothes I owned into a suitcase, packed up my two cats, and got in the car. At the last minute, I remembered I should take a coat - even though it was currently August. My father laughed and said we would all be safely back where we belonged long before cold weather. Yeah, right. I took the coat

Even the drive to his house was memorable in that we stopped at what seemed like every exit for me to go to the bathroom. Since I am on only child, I believe it had been a long time since my father had been around a pregnant woman. He was more than a little baffled - but endlessly patient. And remember, we had two cats bawling in their cat carriers in the car too.

My step-mother, who had up until that moment managed to not ever find herself taking care of a dependent, must have been somewhat shell-shocked when we pulled into the driveway. Nothing like your very pregnant and emotional step-daughter moving in for an undetermined time, with her cats, to perk your life right up. But much like my father, she never complained.

I had only been there about a month when my doctor put me on bed rest. And now my step-mother got to do all of my cooking, cleaning, and laundry. And they got to take care of my cats.

We were a happy, and extremely odd little family. I mostly laid on the sofa watching mindless TV and watched my stomach grow larger by the day. They both worked and came home to take care of me.

Days turned into weeks and then months. My waistline expanded to match.

At some point I gave up driving because I really didn't fit behind the steering wheel. At that point, my aunt and uncle would come and drive me to my doctor's appointments. My aunt's husband was one of those people that everyone loved because he was mild-mannered and good natured. Driving me to the doctor was just one of numerous things he did every week to help others. He was in his late 60s at that time. One of my favorite days was when I was leaving my appointment at the OBs, walked into the waiting room which must have had 20 pregnant women in it, and yelled across to my uncle, "Honey, I'm ready". His eyes grew large and his cheeks grew flushed. I was bored and had to get my laughs where I could.

Obviously, the babies were born and back to my folk's house we went. We were now an even odder family. My step-mother had long since had to go out and buy me a crib and other items I needed but had not been able to get for myself. So, in one small bedroom was me, my two babies, and an odd assortment of their large scale antique furniture as well as things for me and the babies. I had a rocking chair at the end of my bed. I could not even open the closet with it there. Think about living with newborn twins in someones guest room. Yes, that was my life.

I look back on all that time now and it seems surreal. Thankfully, I was young and much more adaptable. Now, I am not sure I would do as well. I did know to keep my mouth shut and be thankful for all of the help I was being given. I could not have begun to have managed without them.

Sometimes I think back on the day my father and I pulled into that driveway. I bet my step-mother often wished she had locked the door, turned off the lights., and pretended she wasn't home.

Its amazing how supportive a family can be. When i was on bedrest with my son my folks and motherlaw were so wonderful. I think we were both very lucky.

I moved in with my parents for a year while DH was overseas. My oldest was 10 month old. Luckily he was the best toddler in the world...so they tolerated me to have all that time with the grand baby.

I bet your step-mom thinks back on that time now with many fond memories... And yes! Thank goodness you didn't know any different then!

I recently spent a week with my 4 children at the very tiny home of my mom and step-dad. They were so gracious! Aren't we lucky? :)

Its amazing what we adapt to when we are young. But what a wonderful family you have to see you through all of that!

What a great story! I'm not sure my parents could or would do that for me. LOL You have awesome parents! :)

wow. I thought it was rough brining 1 newborn baby home to a one-bedroom apartment. Your step-mom must be a really sweet person.

I loved the story but your picture just scared me...I had a really tough time with pregnant. I think twins would have killed me. You are definitely tougher than me!

What a wonderful step-mom and of course dad. That is a tough situation. I've had a similar situation with my daughter & her 1st child. Oh my! Anyway...we are closing on our new house today. Very ready to get settled. Hugs***Renea

What a fantastic story! I loved it!

Deb said...

that picture of you is adorable.

i had a similar story (no infants, thank the Lord!)... living in my sister-in-law's guestroom with two boys, a cat and a puppy, while hubby was across the country for 11 months. at one point, my mil and fil moved in, too, because their house flooded. oh, and they had a dog. and my sister in law only had two bedrooms.

but like you, time has kind of diluted the memory. it was definitely interesting.

great trip down memory lane.

What a great story ... what a loving family you have! And I can't even imagine doing what you did -- the benefits of being a "younger" and more flexible mom! And I love the photo! You aren't a cartoon person after all! : )

Oh,man. All's well that ends well, I guess, but WOW. I will cry if I ever have twins (my twin nephews are enough, thank you very much), and I have all the help in the world. Good for you for making it work and doing it so well.

Okay, I LOVE that picture. I like the idea of getting a few raised eyebrows in the OB waiting room.

Priceless pic.

I've never been all that graceful in accepting help. Must be a pride thing.

You, on the other hand, seem to take things in stride and come out the better for it in the end. You have my admiration!

I'm truly impressed that you were okay with that whole situation. I would have gone out of my mind!!

I laughed at the part about you not fitting behind the steering wheel. When my sister was pregnant with her twins, we went to a restaurant and ended up switching from a booth to a table because she couldn't fit. I'm sure the waitress got a good chuckle out of it...

rosiescribble said...

Wow, what a lovely story. Sometimes when we look back we wonder how on earth we managed but I suppose at the time you just get on with it since there's little choice and it doesn't seem that bad. Still not sure how you managed in the guest room though!

Great story, happy family, wonderful memories.

Ginger said...

I bet your dad and step mom loved every minute of having you and then the babies there.
When I was pregnant with my twins, my dr. just thought I was eating too much, and gaining too fast. Back in the 70's they didn't do the ultra sounds very often. I was so lucky not to have to be on bed rest. Good that you had family to help you.

Jo said...

What a great story! I am sure your parents were glad they were able to help, I know I am when I can. LOVE the picture!

My sis and her family of five lived with us for six months a couple of years ago. The room they stayed in pretty much matched your description, minus one baby, add a husband and throw her older two boys in an even smaller room down the hall. I'm impressed that photo showed you smiling! :)

I think stories and situations like that make everyone appreciate the times of abundance (when they come) and peace. You're a cute, cute pregnant gal!

What a great story/memory. It is obvious your family is tight and very loving. That is awesome. Love the picture.

Sheri and George said...

I'm sure if you asked them, they would say given the chance, they would do it all over again. I moved in with my family after my daughter was born (single mother)and lived with them until she was about 2.
Thank God for families is all I can say!

TheQueen@TerrorsInTiaras said...

What a great family you have. I had 20 weeks of bed rest with my twins, and my family lived 2,000 miles away. We had so many people help us, though; we couldn't have survived without our church "family". And, though our apartment was small, it was much bigger than one room. I can't imagine how you fit everything!

No, I can't imagine what you went through! I barely got through it with my husband and my mom helping me. I guess it's really amazing what you can muster up when something difficult is thrown in your lap.

My favorite aspect of this was your family. Imagine what our world would look like if every single child had a family like that...

She had to get to know you sometime. When is a better time than on bed rest. It was a blessing. Yes I will stick to that statement.

I love embarrasing my family. When my married w/ two kids daughter was w/ me at the store buying a pregnancy test, I told the clerk " I wish her and her boyfriend would get it together!" I thought she was going kill me.

The clerk found me very amusing, so did I. I am easily amused as you probably already know.

Wow, that's a big belly.

When I was preggers with Asher, a man stopped me and said, "Twins huh?" and I said "nope, just one." He said, "mark my words...there are at least ten pounds in there. My wife had twins and she looked JUST like you."

gee, thanks.

Asher was 10 lbs 10 oz. Smart guy.

I'll never forget when I went into labor with my daughter, we had the local police go to the marina where my dad moored his boat. When I was prego with #2 I had some sort of weird hippo-somethin or other than made me overproduce amniotic fluid. As a result even though I only had one, at 8 months I was as large as a woman carrying twins.

Boy, did that suck. Course I only ended up with one, which helped make up for the incredibly large folds of skin.

Eww.

You, however, looked good in twinness. Here's to super bellies!
