I lived through high school graduation and you can too

Two down and two to go.

I heard this statement more times than you'd guess during the past week. My family has just survived our first graduation week.

I say week because once the festivities start, they don't seem to end. Assemblies, baccalaureate practice, graduation practice, baccalaureate, graduation, senior church service, senior brunch...all that and we weren't even a family that had a party or celebration of our own. It got to the point where my kids were like, "Yeah, yeah. I've said goodbye already. Let's go."

And I learned a few things during this past week. As usual, I want to pass them along to you in a sort of "spread the wealth" type experience.

1. Even though my seniors did not feel like graduating high school was a big accomplishment, some people did.

2. These same people were offended that my kids did not order graduation invitations.

3. Being 18 and forgoing invitations because you feel that inviting someone who lives 2000 miles away is equal to printing on a card, "Send cash", does not make you admired by the person who lives 2000 miles away. Miss Manners was wrong on this one.
4. Air horns are not appropriate at graduations. (We were not the offenders on this point.)
5. Shorts, graphic t-shirts, or Hooters type outfits are also not appropriate at graduations. (Ditto on not being the offenders.)6. For the love of all that is sacred, turn the cell phones off.
7. A high school principal whose primary claim to fame is driving a camouflage pick-up truck to football games does not make a riveting graduation speaker.
8. You can get through without crying like Tammy Faye Bakker.

All you have to do is think about what great experiences lie ahead.

Air Horns??? Wow. Things have changed.

All good advice...Thanks for sharing and I hope to not offend when BoyBoy graduates!

Great advice.

Did the folks 2000 miles away send cash anyhow? ;-)

Air horns are not appropriate? I knew I went wrong somewhere...

Oh gosh, I remember those days. Glad I don't have to sit through anymore, unless they are grandchildren and those are nowhere on the horizon as of yet.

I desperately tried to not go to my high school, college, and then law school graduations, but I must say that they did seem to make my mother happy.

Oh yes, graduation time can get pretty hectic with all the festivities that take place. Glad you survived...now you can enjoy them before they leave for college!

Our son graduated from high school in the coliseum of the local university. They had the concession stands open and the place was half empty so people were milling around and eating. They acted like they were at a sporting event rather than a solemn occasion. The speaker was from the local school board and we couldn't hear her - the senior class president did a better job with his speech. All in all, we were just happy to have it over with.

Congratulations!

Life events like this always take on more importance looking back.

Seriously. What's with NOT shutting off cell phones at these things? Is it hard to push the off button? I don't get it.

And CONGRATS!!! :)

Love it, love it, love it. We just went through college graduation. Around here, high school grads are the recipient of large, blow-out open houses, where people set up tables of memorabilia and plant/change their lawn flowers to the school colors. I've heard this is an Indiana thing only. The truck thing completely cracked me up.

Christy said...

Good advice, all around. And I loved the visuals. I transferred a few times in college...so it actually was a six year journey for me. Fun for me, hard for my parents, I'm sure!

Kim Mailhot said...

Phew - that is quite the ordeal ! Too bad about the high school principal as a guest speaker. Adam Sandler is a common speaker at our high school graduations as he is from our humble city of Manchester, NH. Until the more "family" or "grown-up" oriented work he has done ("Reign Over Me" was so good !), I always thought the choice was a weird one. I mean, have you ever had to submit yourself to "Happy Gilmore" or "The Water Boy"? Then again, I hear he drives a fine pick-up truck when he is in town. ;-)

Three loud blasts from the air horn for your kiddos !

Mother Mayhem said...

HOORAH! :o)

Seriously... Air horns and hoochie mama clothes at graduation? Gack.

I'm with you on the invitations. ;o)

Rachael said...

Congratulations to the graduates! (And to you too for surviving it!)

At my very dignified medical school graduation, one family (NOT mine) pulled out pots and pans and big metal spoons to bang on them with, from under their chairs when their "child" received the diploma.

Pam said...

Congrats to the unimpressed graduates! And thanks for the heads up. I'm going to file this away for next year when my oldest graduates. Somehow I don't think I'm going to be able to get away with NOT having a graduation party. Too bad!

I didn't know your chiildren were in private school..wow the principal can afford a camo pick-up. Ya'll must be living in high cotton!

Glad you survivied and live to tell about it.

Debbie I am so proud of you! I knwo how you wanted to wera your Hooters outfit. I know it was important. Thanks for leaving it at home (tee hee).

Air horns and cell phones?! Seriously?! I am so old-fashioned...

Sheri and George said...

When my kids graduated:
1.we sent invites to every known relative- didn't matter how far away they were cuz we didn't want to piss no one off.
2. It didn't matter what was worn cuz it was under gowns and no one saw it anyway but all dressed appropriately.
3. Cellphones were a long way in the future so didn't have to
worry about shuttung them off.
4. Had big family parties and then the kids went fromhouse party to house party to celebrate.

I survived 3 of these in times gone by so I am certain you can survive in modern and future times.
Congratulations on these 2 and Good Luck on the next 2!

What a milestone to get through! Since my oldest finished school at home I didn't have to do all of this....which suited both of our personalities well. But I've got two more to go also.

Congrats to the grads. And congrats to you for the beginning of a new kind of relationship with the grads. I really enjoy my adult son (who is so NOT an adult still!!). Seems like every stage of our relationship has been my favorite!

Melinda said...

Ooops...I just ironed my Hooters outfit for the graduation I am attending this weekend.

What - no beachballs or streakers?

No wonder the kiddos weren't impressed.

And big congratulations to the Graduates!!

Congratulations! Loved the post! My kids are just 12 and 7 so I am trying to put off any of this graduation business for a few more years.

I remember it poured down rain for my graduation and I had to sit outside getting soaked. Of course, nobody really minded the rain we were busy thinking about the all night graduation party!

Maria-Thérèse said...

Congratulations!! Yay!! Sounds like your kids have very good manners too and they inherited it from you. I'm rhyming, woohoo.

I've been celebrating a bit too - had my first exhibition + "real life" selling of afiori products two days ago and it went really well.

Lucy said...

Oh for cryin' out loud...I never even thought of how cell phones could now saturate THAT ceremony. Does it ever stop? Congrats on your kiddos though. I'm glad I'm through that age and over it. It's a few few years but I wouldn't want it any longer.

I find that being topless is completely appropriate. Love nudity.

A camouflage pick-up truck??? That belongs to a school principal??? Wow. That's making a statement :-)
Glad things went so well. CONGRATULATIONS!

Hmmm, I'm guessing that the blow-up doll that appeared at my high school graduation would also be inappropriate??

Cairo Typ0 said...

I've never heard of sending out invites for a graduation! I had two tickets and that was it. There were no add-ons allowed.

Congrats on your grads!! :)

Evil Twin's Wife said...

I'm going through a lot of this same stuff, only my son is only "graduating" from 5th grade. We're still a week away from the actual graduation and the activities are endless.

ladyfi said...

Air horns and camo trucks! Love it.

And those cell phones are so necessary so that they can Twitter and IM each other... ;-)

Barbaloot said...

Oh-graduation week is death! Mine dragged out SO long---I never sent invitations either-but I have a box of free ones still in my room. They're 7 years old. I wonder if I sent them now if people'd send money?

To show my irratation at the whole week I wore jeans to graduation (but rolled them up under my robe so you couldn't really tell) and didn't stick around to sign anyone's yearbook. I'm such a rebel:)

Dani said...

Congrats to the grad! (How many times have you heard THIS in the last while?) :)

I recall principals standing up and announcing, no air horns, no nakedness, etc. Poor Miss Manners, she must just be beside herself!

Daniele said...

Congratulations to the graduates!

That had to be so disruptive with that lovely behavior. Luckily, we didn't have anyone like that at mine but that was eleven years ago.

themom said...

Graduation ceremonies no longer have the "class" of years ago. At my son's college grad I was surprised to see beer cans on the mortar boards, shorts and t-shirts under the gowns. It's an entirely different world now.

wenderful said...

I LOVE the camo truck. That's the kind of thing you'd find here. I agree, not a contender for world class public speaking.
Yes, college is a thousand times better than high school!
Congrats to your graduates!

Mark said...

Funny and true! I was at one where the graduating class bopped a beach ball around and then a blow up sex doll! Ha! What were they going to do, expel them. One last act of rebellion.

Congrats! And at my graduation? Each senior handed the principal a marble during the handshake. I was sitting on stage and he finally started tossing them at us. I had to take off my cap and store them in there -- 357 graduates, about 350 marbles.

So an air horn? Not all that creative. But I was impressed with the outfit. Was that under a graduation gown or the attire of a guest?

lizspin said...

Oh. . .don't I feel how you feel! Graduations in my house come without the invites and the hoopla. . . and the airhorns. . . and the Hooters shirts. . .

At my graduation, I held my breath the whole time thinking something really taboo would happen. It didn't. One kid did threaten to go clothes-free under his robe. Someone must've lent him some at the last minute.

I spent five years in college for a four year degree, does that help with the last one?

Debbie,

I love your blog and that is the truth! I AGREE about the announcements and can't believe you said it out loud! We have felt so ripped off as we order these each time.. and on our number 4 son said, Do you mind if we don't?" He did not mind at all! Why did we not start sooner with that. The pressure, oh the pressure to do all the rituals that just cost us and make us feel rude!

The post was wise and funny :)!

Greg C said...

I loved it. So you forgot your air horn is what you are saying. Well try harder for the next one. And please give me your address so I can send that hooters outfit for your next child to graduate.

I got an invitation the other day and I had to ask who it was. My wife said: you know my mother's friend's grandauther. Yea like she is getting a present. haha

Great advice, I will need it next year and yes you will be getting an invitation. :)

As one on the tail-end of this particular ride, I agree with your list & would add that while a spray bottle of water makes an efficient personal cooling system, please be considerate of your seat-mates who might be wearing silk :-P
I march my last one across the stage next weekend & I can't describe the relief I'm feeling of finally being out of high school!

I have one son graduating high school this year and coming from Europe where high school graduation isn't such a big deal, I find it so commercial here in the U.S. Wherever you turn, someone wants money for something. I feel sorry for the pressure put on parents who can't afford it. Unfortunately a high school diploma today isn't worth too much, jobwise. Even a Bachelors isn't what it used to be.

Graduation is clearly not such a big deal in this country until you graduate from university. More emphasis is on the parties afterwards. Oh I am so glad those days are behind me now. I have blocked out what my life was like from the time my daughter was 14 to 18.
