Of Festivals and Mullets

One of the things I greatly loved about living on the coast of North Carolina was the fact that those folks know how to have a festival. They fested everything. If it bloomed, they fested it. If it was remotely edible, they fested it. Somewhere within a 30 minute drive of my house, almost every weekend of the year, was a festival. I loved it. My husband and I could throw the kids in the car and have a great day of seeing crafts, eating food, and people watching for next to no cost.

We loved the azalea festival and the dogwood festival.
Then, since we lived near Morehead City, there was a bald man festival.
So, you can imagine the thrill that went through me when I read about the upcoming festival in a town near us - the Mullet Festival. Holy Billy Ray Cyrus, that was sure to be a blast. I wrote it on the calendar and counted down the minutes.Did you know that mullet is also the name of a fish? I didn't. The Mullet Festival was sure enough festing all things related to fish known as a mullet. Not celebrating the best men's hairstyle since time began. That's not to say there weren't some mullet hairdos in attendance at the festival.
It was the south, after all. We like to cling to a trend until it screams for mercy.

Awesome festival. Can't wait to hear how it goes. When I met my hubby he had a mullet. It drove me crazy. So after a few months of dating he had it cute off. I look back at those pics and think how cute he looked with a mullet. LOL! My little sister still thinks it's a sexy haircut. Why? I have no idea. Thanks for stopping by. Hope you guys had a great Fathers Day.

Hugs
Michelle

Now, how could they go and screw up a perfectly good festival by celebrating a fish?? The hairdo event would have been way cooler.

Kim Mailhot said...

Did the fish have "the business in the front, party in the back" attitude at least?

Keep on festing...
Happy Monday !

I didn't know the mullet was a fish. But I know of what I THOUGHT was an artist named Fred Mullet who designs rubber stamps that are fish just like the one you pictured.

How interesting. And so happy that you can still see so many of the best men's hairstyle since time began! (Cough.)

Angie Ledbetter said...

Yeah, but did ya eat some mullet at least?

Hugs from the festival capitol of the world. :)

I hope you post pictures of this festival. I wonder if rat tails are included too. Remember those? I still see some around...shudder.

I have cousins who once won the "most identical" category at the Twins Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio. Even the freckles on their knees were identical. The story goes that Joyce, who was not easily rattled, took Lois's (who was) driving test for her.

Since you are a Mullet lover, I would HIGHLY recommend the Ice Bear's Mullet night. Oh yes! They have a Best Mullet contest. And almost everyone there has a mullet!

Audrey said...

Oh my stars! The mullet! Hard to believe the festival wasn't about that classic 'do! LOL! I must say, John Stamos wore a mullet better than Billy Ray. But still - that look is just wrong!

"we like to cling to a trend until it screams mercy" Love it! (love your post, that is, not the mullet...)

The mullet hair festival would be way cooler than the fish version but at least there were some hair mullets to view.

Mullets.....*snort*

So, how was the fish????

Aw, man, what a bummer!

Cathy said...

roflmao - too funny! I would've gone to make fun of the hairstyles too!

Mullet is some good eatin girlfriend! My grandpa use to catch them by the nets full. Grandma could fry em up and we could eat several at one sittin.

You are right about the "Festing" in the south. We calendar lots of them for fun weekends. Now we take the GRAND~girls. They love it, especially the pony rides.

ladyfi said...

Ah yes - the mullet is very fashionable here among sportsmen!

Still - celebrating the fish can also be good...

And let us not forget the mullet's little cousin, The Skullet. You know, when men maintain their lovely long locks, even when they are bald on top. Think Riff Raff in Rocky Horror Picture Show. Or my friend Steve in the 80s.

I'll take a mullet over a come over any day!

Mullets - YUCK!

Christy said...

tell us - did you REALLY go to it? This post made me laugh!

I get a painful reminder of the 'south clinging trend' thing almost every day.

lakeviewer said...

Yeah for festivals, for fun food and crazy costumes. We have few festivals here in the Northwest.

The best one is the Salmon/Harvest festival in September on the river in Coos Bay, with canoe races, plank cooked salmon and Indian arts and heritage, sponsored by the confederated tribes of Coos,Rogue, Umpqua and many others.

Oh...I know of Mullet fests! There is on at the Florabama (a bar...you guessed it, on the Florida/Alabam state line) every year. It gets worse: they have a mullet toss! You get to throw a dead fish as far as you can across the state line and win valuable prizes (read trophy and bar tabs). It use to be tons of fun...but now too many people and too much b.s.

Happy Mullet Day!

Michele Renee said...

Hope you had fun! My boys would have loved it. Joe Dirt (an awesome mullet 'do) on dvd gets viewed at our house as least once a year.

WHAT?!?!? We have nothing cool like this in Utah. Not even a Polygamy Festival!

Oh, wait. That's called Walmart.

darn. I was marking my calendar for next year's mullet festival. Then, I find out it's a fish festival. Never mind. I'll just stick to Super Cow and Feather Fest (in appreciation of all things poultry).

Belle said...

The good old mullet.Where on earth do you find these pictures?

Meg said...

Business in the front, party in the back.

As far as I know, mullet (the fish) is used as bait. I'm not sure why this deserves a festival.

Melanie J said...

Lousiana is the total party state. No one can do it better (or more regularly) than a bunch of drunken Cajun Catholics. Trust me. Our OFFICIAL state motto is "Laissez les bon temps rouler" (Let the good times roll.)

Still, we never had anything as cool as a mullet festival. Did you know there's an actual Mullet Hall of Fame? I heard an interview with the guy that runs it.

Cheffie-Mom said...

Business in the front! Party in the back! LOL! Oh, what fun!

I have eaten more mullet than anyone else I know. It is actually quite tasty if it is fresh but it doesn't freeze well. As for the hairdo, I may need to get one now that we have a car on blocks in the front yard. :)

One of the wines I sell is called Mullet Hall and people always laugh about the name. I should send you a bottle.

(army)Wife said...

They really need to rethink that festival. Celebrating mullet hairstyles would be so much more fun!

Houston fests everything too.

I learned something new today. I had no idea a mullet was a fish. Huh.

Oh man. I miss North Carolina SO much. I can honestly say I don't see a lot of mullets in Washington DC. Fish or hairy.

The German word for Mullet is 'fokuhila' (pronounced foh-kuh-hee-lah'), which is short for 'forne kurz, hinten lang.' It basically means short in front, long in back.

Katherine Aucoin said...

That's one thing I miss about the Big Easy is festivals. They celebrated everything there too. But if we wanted to celebrate the mullet. We went to the Florabama for the mullet toss...the fish ;-)

Funny you mention this ! We drove to the beach this weekend and every other exit there was a sign for some sort of festival or another. It was like festivalpalooza!! I ALMOST stopped for the Blueberry Festival but the call of the beach ultimately won :)

When my son was a toddler, I accidentally got him a haircut like that.I couldn't part with the curls in the back, and the front had already been cut too short...
My husband was not thrilled.

Sorry, I loved Full House when I was younger.

That festival sounds like fun. My son had a mullet when he was one. I think it's acceptable when you're a toddler...but on a man?? Yikes.

oh we love the mullet here. still it was on accident that i gave my oldest child one. he had no hair on top & i didn't want to cut it in the back until he had more on top. before i knew it, there was a gaggle of teens pointing out my 16 month's mullet. he was smiling ear from ear at all the attention.

Hahahaha -- what a disappointment.

Kristina's wrong, we have lots of festivals in Utah. She must just not get out much. My own town has the "Summerfest" (celebrating, you know, summer,) and the next town over has "Strawberry Days," and there are lots more. Often there's a rodeo involved.

Whispering Writer said "I think it's acceptable when you're a toddler" and I just have to say, what do you mean by "acceptable"? Because if you mean "cute and attractive hairstyle," then I beg to differ . . .

Personally, I can't think of anyone who could pull of a mullet in it's heyday, let alone now. Although, I suppose, Uncle Jesse would have come close.

It would be fun to go to a mullet hairdo festival though! Unless one had to have a mullet to get in, then not so much . . .
