What to film...and what to not

Once again I find myself in the position of trying to educate the masses. Today's lesson?

Nothing good comes from making a sex tape.

Yes, strange as that may seem, that is my assertion. Here's my rationale.

An elementary school teacher in northern California had the sweet idea to send each of the precious kiddos in her class home for the summer with a memento - a DVD of classroom memories. However, much to her dismay, she found out after the fact that in the middle of the DVD were 6 seconds of the teacher in a rather adult situation on a couch.
Oops. Now that is worse than accidentally giving little Susie the wrong grade on her report card or forgetting that little Johnny's parents are divorced. She found out when a parent called to enlighten her. That's a phone call you'd neither love to make or receive. I bet the principal of that school is having a relaxing summer about now, too.

We had to suffer through what seemed like years of Paris Hilton's exploits on tape. And last week the news was leaked that there is more than likely recorded evidence for all posterity of John Edwards and his campaign conquest.
I don't know about you all but I'd rather see another pitiful Rocky sequel than something like that. Here's my question - why? Why do these people record themselves? It's not like the people on the Nobel Prize committee are sitting around saying, "Now we have these two brilliant candidates who are virtually tied for this prize. Oh but wait, this one made a sex tape. Let's give it to him."If I had any money at all or was a betting woman (neither of which are the case), I'd be willing to wager that South Carolina governor Mark Sanford has some tape of himself "hiking the Appalachian trail" in Argentina. With the remarkable judgment he has shown so far, I'd say we'd be safe to go ahead and start popping the popcorn.

That's too funny! People do the silliest things, don't they? You have but confirmed my suspicions...

Wonder if that teacher will keep her job or not?

ladyfi said...

Oops - when I say that is funny, I meant your post, not the teacher's situation...

Jenni Jiggety said...

Oh my...

Yeah I don't know what people are thinking. I don't even like to see video of myself CLOTHED.

♥ Boomer ♥ said...

Chuckling...snarkle...har...ROFL...ugh awful, huh!? Just awful.

Audrey said...

I am with you Debbie! I don't get it either. And it is inevitable that the tapes will reveal themselves (pun very much intended) at some point in the persons life - so why? Pamela Andersons argument that "it was for our personal use," confused me - I thought, wouldn't it be more fun to do it than to watch it? But, I am not rich and famous, so I guess I am not that educated!

Amy said...

I am not sure. I record my little one doing things. But not me that is so stupid and if it comes out it is your own fault.

The Gaelic Wife said...

One of the pitfalls of the digital age - everyone's a director AND a star. Even those who wouldn't be invited to the casting couch in the first place.

Scrappy Girl said...

That is TERRIBLE about the teacher...how embarrassing!

I have never been able to figure out why celebrities still take the chance by recording...I mean come on...they have to know it is going to be put out there for all the world to see when things go wrong in that relationship.

Lucy said...

Ahhhhh.....Mark Sanford. Now there's a piece of work. He still doesn't think he did anything wrong. Ahhhhhh......politicians. Same story over and over again.

Bridgett said...

You'd think...ESPECIALLY the politicians...would be smarter than to make sex tapes. They should know they're going to leak all over the media.

At least the celebrities get their names in the news for five minutes, so it's probably worth it for them. :D

XOXO

Excellent Post Today!!! Way to get the most out of headline news.

I thought Edwards would have had a sex tape surface by now. Or, Clinton.

Deb said...

This is something I have wondered for years. It seems that a sex tape is becoming the "standard" activity for so many couples...why? If I taped myself in that situation, I can almost guarantee I would never allow myself to be in that situation again.

Regarding the teacher...I cannot imagine anything more awkward. One would think she had viewed at least a couple of copies to see if they were "good...?"

Me, You, or Ellie said...

Ack! Not only do I not want to ever go near watching a sex tape of that crazy creepy governor, but I just don't want it to be in existance. Say it ain't so. Um please???

I would never make a sex tape of myself, no matter what! My biggest fear is not the rest of the world, but my son or his friends seeing it. TOTAL humilitation!

How these people don't crawl under a rock and die from embarrassment I'll never know.

Once the hubs thought it would be a great grand idea to put giant mirrored panels on the closet doors beside our bed.

It was decidedly not.

People can just be so stupid sometimes...
Whatever you put out there is what is going to come back to you. A thought to live by, don't ya think ?
Happy Monday !

Meadowlark said...

Have you ever made a dvd? Not a sex tape, but just a dvd, which must be encoded from video transferred from tape/digital or otherwise. I'm not buying her story. Who made the tape for her? It's either a) someone getting back at her or b)on purpose.

If she did it herself, it didn't happen "accidentally". BFF is a sex offender probation officer... she's had about 3 of these "accidents" this year already by offenders.

jen@odbt said...

Oy! There's always a camera somewhere these days. Even a quick trip to the store for milk might get you on you tube. I'm not sure what to say for the teacher as she was probably a willing participant in those 6 seconds. What a disaster.

Sara said...

Here, here! My fave part of this post? How you found 2 pics of John Edwards & the...other senator (can't remember his name), showing the size of something. LOL Great pics for a post such as this!

2nd Cup of Coffee said...

You are hilarious. I agree with Jenni Jiggety--don't like to be taped IN my clothes. You could bribe me by threatening to show the vacation tapes of me walking down a public street with my family. Yikes.

Sandi said...

I have learned this lesson myself the hard way.....

Yes, even mothers of fourteen have sex tapes, and when child number three found it, well, let's just say, he was already i therapy so I think it happened to the right kid.

Sara @ Domestically Challenged said...

I am with the masses. I can't stand to see my fullly clothed, make-up filled self on camera. With it all shaking and naked? Never.

Kate Coveny Hood said...

This is something I will never understand. I thought that episode of Friends when Ross and Rachel made the accidental sex tape was perfect. When they did watch it they were horrified and repulsed. I mean - come on! Who thinks they're going to look good in these things. Unless you are acting for the camera (and hello - have a fabulous body), that CAN'T be pretty.

That poor teacher.

Brooke said...

i read about the teacher over the week - hopefully none of the children saw it! :-O

Barbaloot said...

It really is just sad that it's not plain common sense to NOT make a sex tape. How is this not a basic fact that people automatically know?!

Ronnica said...

I don't get it either. I can't imagine the look on the teacher's face when she found out her mistake!

Greg C said...

He did not have S@x with that woman. It was only an affair of the heart. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. What was he thinking? He needs to do coke if he wants to get re-elected in these hard times.

I wonder how many of those parents sent their little darling out of the room and watched the replay? By chance did she teach a class in multimedia?

The Dental Maven said...

I am totally going to use the term, "hiking the Appalachian trail" next time the opportunity presents itself!!

Tooo funny!

It is interesting what we decide should be saved for prosperitiy. Andy Warhol's 15 minutes of fame comment is very appropriate here. Interesting thing about fame, it does not discern between what we preceive as good or bad.
Thanks for sharing.

Kristina P. said...

I read about this, and was horrified! And by horrified, I mean amazed and jealous. I wish I had that teacher!

Muthering Heights and Other Senseless Sensibility said...

Good advice...and really, I'm not sure who would want a video of themselves nude...you can't airbrush THAT, ya know?

Krëg said...

While your post reminded me of a story from my college days that will likely become my next post, it also made me shudder to think that there may be a Sylvester Stallone sex tape out there somewhere. Please God, let me NEVER see that.

Under the Influence said...

Oh dear. I had not heard there might be a John Edwards tape. Naughty. Naughty. Stupid. Stupid.

smiles4u said...

I too, just don't get what people are thinking when they do these things. Maybe they aren't thinking?Maybe they want to get caught? I'm with the camp of people that can hardly stand to see themselves on video fully clothed so can't even imagine thinking doing it naked, would be appealing and far from sexy!

Diane said...

i'm with Jenni! NO WAY i'm letting my nakedness be on film!

Chrissy said...

OMG!! That is insane!

Bobbi Jo said...

I love your blog! Thank you for the good laugh this morning! Hugs, Bobbi Jo

That picture of John Edwards is perfect!

Southern Aspirations said...

too funny. Yes, this is a situation where, no good can come of it. Period.

Rachel@just another day in paradise said...

no chance of any sex tape from me leaking out. It's often tough to film in complete darkness, ya know?

Rose Forest said...

You make me giggle. :D

lagirl said...

That kind of stuff is hilarious, but ONLY if it pertains to someone else. I'm thinking it must be a prerequisite to entering politics. Ya think?

Pricilla said...

Erm, had Edwards and Sanford shown good judgement up 'til then?

don't know about the teacher but I guess she was just trying to emulate "the stars." Or wanted a critique from another teacher....

Cheffie-Mom said...

I have no words for this. I almost feel sorry for this teacher!

mo.stoneskin said...

Without having read the story I'm trying to fathom how the teacher managed to splice in the adult footage! She must have had lots of small clips in the same folder, similarly named, some for the kid DVD and some for some dodgy home video?!

Michelle said...

You're so funny Debbie. Love this post. I never did understand the sex tape thing either. So did the teacher get fired?

The Blonde Duck said...

I just want to know why you'd want to watch yourself. I mean, ew. Narcassist much?

Frances said...

Well, as Hubby says, "People are stupid." LOL!

Anyone that films themselves having sex and doesn't almost immediately destroy it, chances it getting out to the public.

Secret Mom Thoughts said...

That poor teacher! I bet she got fired over her mistake.

Maria-Thérèse said...

Had it been around here, I doubt anyone would have made the call. People would start acting weird around the teacher, slowly convincing her that either they or she had gone mad.

Kristin said...

Thanks for the mental picture. Ewwwwwwwwwwww. When will they learn?

A Lawyer Mom's Musings said...

That people make these video clips of themselves in compromising positions is puzzling. But for someone who is running for president to do it is downright shocking.

I read somewhere that the Edwards sex-tape "leaker" is the campaign staffer he asked to step forward and claim to be father of Ms. Hunter's baby. Surprise, surprise.

Angie Ledbetter said...

I always wondered why people do that too. Is it so when they forget in old age, they can watch those hot tapes again? If so, they won't remember how to rewind the VCR or play the DVD player by then...or those contraptions won't even be around.

PS Memories are always better than the actual event. :)

That's true. Why DO people make them? It boggles the mind. If it's out there on tape, chances are...you're going to have to get him a cookie to go with it.

I just heard the story of the CA teacher...hard to believe things like that really happen! Narcissism and ADD must be a bad combo.

Something Happened Somewhere Turning said...

What is it with some of these teachers these days? That is too bad for the children. Who cares if the teacher got embarassed. I'd be real miffed if my daughters plugged in a dvd and found their teacher engaged in a sexual act.

Louise said...

LOL. It must have been a Freudian slip on the teacher's part...but what would Freud have made of it, I wonder?

Kristina said...

Hi, I really like your blog, and would like to include it in my diploma paper in Discourse Analysis. I would really appreciate it if you could take a couple of minutes to take part in the research, so if you're interested please visit my blog.

I know I certainly wouldn't want to keep a tape of myself and my husband in the act, or anyone else for that matter. Also an important reminder to label your video tapes... you never know what could be on those things.

JAN'S PLACE said...

OMG that is toooo funny.. yes. your post, not the teachers questionable DVD.. how can you get something like that stuffed in the tape, like filling in a sandwich???? With bread on both sides.. that was certainly not the filling she thought was in it!

Brenda said...

Totally agree. What makes people want to make those tapes? I have never understood.. . .

Holly said...

never understood that myself...

I'll bet that class gets a special "health class" early next school year.

WhisperingWriter said...

My husband wants to make some of these tapes. I say no way. Suppose I became a famous writer and it gets leaked? Then the world will see my pale ass and be forever traumatized. I just can't do that to innocent people..

Melinda said...

Reason number one for agreeing to such a video...alcohol...lots and lots of alcohol. I'm not speaking from experience, I'm just sayin'.

Heck watching the birth tape even me shutter (not the birth of my child ... but the size of my butt!) ... LOL

As always so agree!

Michele Renee said...

One more thing to discuss with our kids. Times are not like they used to be (i.e. film that actually had to get developed by someone, and then it could be destroyed later).

Kaleena said...

I read about that teacher a few days ago. What was she thinking? What kind of woman would ever film herself doing "the deed" and then be dumb enough to accidentally send 6 seconds of it home with her students?!

Just Another SAHM said...

Yikes, I can't believe the teacher didn't bother to watch the DVD before sending them out!

I'm with you - don't record anything you do not want anyone else to see. Look at all the people who made one for that special person...who turned around & sold it to the press. Dumb dumb dumb

D... said...

OH my! Yep, I'd hate to get that phone call. Embarrassment galore! I don't get the appeal, myself. Oh well.

When Pigs Fly said...

You are so right. No idea why people would want to have anything like that floating around of themselves. Very scary.

themom said...

You ask the question for the ages? I can't imagine why anyone would want to film "the event." One worry I don't have, is that a video will pop up of my past (and I mean waaaaay past) experiences.

septembermom said...

I would never record myself in "those" kind of positions:) You would think that these public people would be smarter about displaying all that for anyone to exploit. What's with that teacher?

Renee said...

They don't get better than you. I love this and am floored too that anyone would do this.

Love Renee xoxo

lol, what the hell are people thinking? DOH!

I don't get the whole taping yourself thing either. There must be some kind of extra excitement in the danger of getting caught or something. Do people actually like to watch themselves in that kind of situation? Mind boggling, for sure.

Kathleen @ ForgingAhead said...

You are so 100 percent right on all counts. People do extremely strange things.

Bee and Rose said...

That is just crazy! Why on God's green Earth do people feel the need to record themselves in this manner!? Oy! Sanford, no doubt, has a tape...ick....

i live in SC and i am sick to my stomach over our governor's tryst. i didn't vote for him and wish his term was ending sooner. i have been wondering if a tape would surface of him and Maria. not sure if the email made national headlines, but our local papers published an email he sent her and believe me, he is in love with this woman and i would not be surprised if they filmed or photographed their exploits over the last year. what a pig! the sex tapes are the only reasons why Kim K and Paris are "famous". i hope they realize that and don't believe we all take them seriously. take care and thanks for making me laugh.

I've wondered about people like that. I mean, they must be the same kind of people that say nasty, awful things about their mothers on public blogs, and are surprised when mom finds out and disowns them...

What does it say in the bible about the last days? Something about their sins being shouted from the rooftops? Sounds like cable antennas and satellite dishes to me. ;-)
