Anniversaries, Elvis, and the Shriners

Yesterday, I shared my 23rd wedding anniversary with the anniversary of Elvis' death. Usually that sort of coincidence is not something anyone would have to give a second thought to. But my life played out a little differently.
I was married in Memphis. Also home to a little shrine called Graceland. And it is a shrine for those millions of Elvis fans from around the world that flock there, especially on August 16 each year. I didn't think about that when I was young and giddily planning my wedding. I wasn't much of an Elvis fan although I do have a vivid memory of my mother crying her eyes out the day he died. I chose a Saturday to get married that miraculously did not appear to conflict with the huge multitude of activities I had to avoid to please my expanding family (college football, various hunting seasons, etc - remember, I am in the south). I had always pictured myself getting married in the fall. Oh well. August 16 would have to do. Maybe it would be a cool day.
We found an old home that had been turned into a bed and breakfast and special event venue. We booked it in January. It would be perfect for the reception as well as to house my out-of-town family.
Caterers were found, florists were scheduled. I found a perfect dress for $100 (you all remember my frugality, right?) and booked a lovely hotel for our wedding night with the plan to leave on our honeymoon the following day. All systems were go.

Cue the music that let's you know all systems are about to go haywire.
August 16 rolled around that year, much like every other year in Memphis, as a hot, humid day. With rain. The rain delayed the beginning of the parade that closed the roads in mid-town Memphis between my quaint little house housing my relatives and soon to hold the reception and the church of my wedding. The parade that had something to do with Elvis and thousands of other people. Including Shriners. You have to love the Shriners.
The rain relented before the wedding began which left the air dripping with moisture. I dripped with moisture too. That perfect dress I bought in January 1986? Quite the height of fashion with full satin sleeves and skirt. One benefit was that I'm fairly sure I lost 5 pounds sweating and lugging that dress around on me all day.
The church was beautiful and the wedding went as I had always hoped and dreamed. Off we went to our reception in the beautiful old house.

Without air conditioning.
No one had thought to tell me when I booked it in January that it wasn't air conditioned. And I sure didn't think to ask in the middle of winter. Thankfully, I had put my bridesmaids in sleeveless dresses. Bridesmaids are always a walking time bomb when you put them in a dress they will never wear again - which I had. But at least they were the only ones not in long sleeves.

No one fainted and we didn't have to call 911 so I consider the reception a success. There are lots of photos of people with the biggest sweat stains you've ever seen and portions of the video where our dear friends and relations are griping about the lack of air conditioning. It's always been fun for us to watch since we were so excited, we didn't' really notice what was happening at the moment.
And off we went to our hotel for our wedding night.

With the Shriners.

Yes, they were staying in my bridal hotel. And let me tell you, the Shriners we were honeymooning with can toss back more than their fair share of libations. And sing. And play the lobby piano.

All. Night. Long.In summary, best laid plans - yada, yada, yada. But, something must have worked because 23 years later, we are still going strong.

And I wouldn't go back and change a single thing about that day.

I'm right behind you! But I had the sense to get married in the spring in the South! My sleeves were just like Princess Di's.

happy anniversary!

i had a big chunk of family not attend because it was the homecoming game at UT.

i figured if they'd rather go to a butt-whoopin of a football game then i'd rather them go - and i'd save $10 per person that wasn't there!

Happy Anniversary! I had the opposite problem at my reception. It was in the spring so we had beautiful tables set up outside and all over the balconies of the reception hall. And it was FREEZING! Wind like crazy, and twenty degree temperatures. My little dress with cap sleeves... not very warm. I had goose bumps like crazy. So we did a lot of huddling inside, avoiding all the lovely decorations out of doors.

Just like you though, it's made for some good stories. :)

Wow! Happy Anniversary to you Debbie! We must've been picking the right month, minus a day b/c today is my 7-year anniversary! I just wrote a long post about how my husband and I met (online) - very different than most. But still here we are happily married today. Congrats to you both and many, many more!

P.S. - I love Elvis and Memphis!

I would love a beanie with a fan on it, it would solve many of my problems.

So what you are really saying is that you have a dance to Elvis every night?

Ours is August 14 and this year it was our tenth. I've been all nostalgic about it as I've been writing our love story. Congrats to the both of you. Maybe you can invite the shriners to your 25th celebration. ;)

Happy anniversary. I'm assuming the place was a tad bit nicer than that home you have in the picture!!! Actually, I've been to outdoor weddings in the summertime and it's just miserable. Outdoor weddings can be nice but it's so dependent on the weather...

Happy Anniversary, Deb !
Of course there had to be a story in your wedding events - Life wouldn't have had it any other way, either ! The saying "what doesn't kill ya, makes ya stronger" was obviously referring to your nuptuals or "was it a couple who sweats together sticks together" ?;)
Happy Monday and Long Live The King !

Happy Anniversary a day late to you and your husband. This week is full of celebratory things for me. Today is younger daughter's 7th wedding anniverary, on Wednesday, my first grandchild will turn 12 and we are all going to a neat amusement park near here to celebrate his big day and on Saturday, my crazy son will be 36 years old! All good things to celebrate though aren't they?

Happy Anniversary! What a great story - sounds a lot like our wedding in Germany. It was blazing hot and not air conditioning anywhere. Several times I thought I would faint in my wedding gown that had a skirt with what seemed like 100 layers! And then, my family had booked us a room at a romantic hotel, far off the beaten path, which we tried to find (and finally did!) at three in the morning... But I love a good story! And you've got one with your wedding!! :) Silke

No air conditioning, that's the worst. But you found the love of your life and you wouldn't change a thing! Awesome story and one that you can tell again and again.

Great post - and a reminder to all the women out there planning weddings. It doesn't matter how fancy or chi-chi your wedding is, it's about being able to look at that day 23 years later and say Happy Anniversary to your husband! Congratulations!

Happy Anniversary. And I can commiserate with the lack of air conditioning. I got married in July in the Northeast. On a day taht started with rain and ended with hot and humid. And the a/c in the hotel where we had our reception was broken!!! Our pictures are full of sweaty people as well. Including the bride.

Happy Anniversary! See, you now have stories to tell your kids. About frugality, Elvis and how weddings don't have to cost the down payment on a house to be special and memorable.

I was married in '82. My dress cost $75. My entire wedding cost $2500. And people STILL talk about how much fun they had at the reception. We had 250 guests. I was the first grandchild to get married on either side and my father's only girl. You can only imagine. It was fun, everyone ate well, drank well and had a blast.

My sister in law HAD to have the $5,000 dress and the big expensive wedding. It was BORING.

Sorry to rant in your comments....

Oh, I am just sweating thinking about it:) Hope you had a wonderful anniversary!

A couple of years ago..my niece was married. Her reception was outside. It was a scorching 110 +. Unreal. We all thought we were doing well in the heat. WRONG. My 5 year old at the time got heat stroke..104 fever..Scary. However she pulled out of it and has never forgotten that day! Me either..panic.

BTW...the puppet picture has me going back to a sweet memory of the muppets..ahhh:)

Serves them right!

You made me laugh, because your wedding sounds very similar to my own. Even the wedding gown. I watched the wedding of of Princess Diana and wanted that dress. And, yes I got one very similar...and my wedding day I was dripping with no air conditioner either.

Oh my word Deb, SERIOUSLY?! This is too funny. In a weird, it-could-only-happen-in-the-south kind of way. Memphis on August 16 with all the EP fans is probably like Bethlehem at Christmas for Christians or Mecca for Muslims... converging from all corners of the earth.

Shows how powerful love is, to make one forget the importance of probably the most sacred day on the Memphis calendar.

Do you now run shrieking whenever you see Shriners? What a truly scary experience. LOL

I hear ya, honey. We had an outdoor wedding in June in Southern Virginia. Whoooweeee! It was hot. 98 degrees in the shade.

But it's like the old saying about dress rehearsals, right? The worse the dress rehearsal, the better opening night? Same thing... the worse the wedding and honeymoon, the better the marriage ;)

Worked for us!
