I was married in Memphis. Also home to a little shrine called Graceland. And it is a shrine for those millions of Elvis fans from around the world that flock there, especially on August 16 each year. I didn't think about that when I was young and giddily planning my wedding. I wasn't much of an Elvis fan although I do have a vivid memory of my mother crying her eyes out the day he died. I chose a Saturday to get married that miraculously did not appear to conflict with the huge multitude of activities I had to avoid to please my expanding family (college football, various hunting seasons, etc - remember, I am in the south). I had always pictured myself getting married in the fall. Oh well. August 16 would have to do. Maybe it would be a cool day.
We found an old home that had been turned into a bed and breakfast and special event venue. We booked it in January. It would be perfect for the reception as well as to house my out-of-town family.
Caterers were found, florists were scheduled. I found a perfect dress for $100 (you all remember my frugality, right?) and booked a lovely hotel for our wedding night with the plan to leave on our honeymoon the following day. All systems were go.Cue the music that let's you know all systems are about to go haywire.
August 16 rolled around that year, much like every other year in Memphis, as a hot, humid day. With rain. The rain delayed the beginning of the parade that closed the roads in mid-town Memphis between my quaint little house housing my relatives and soon to hold the reception and the church of my wedding. The parade that had something to do with Elvis and thousands of other people. Including Shriners. You have to love the Shriners.
The rain relented before the wedding began which left the air dripping with moisture. I dripped with moisture too. That perfect dress I bought in January 1986? Quite the height of fashion with full satin sleeves and skirt. One benefit was that I'm fairly sure I lost 5 pounds sweating and lugging that dress around on me all day.
The church was beautiful and the wedding went as I had always hoped and dreamed. Off we went to our reception in the beautiful old house.Without air conditioning.
No one had thought to tell me when I booked it in January that it wasn't air conditioned. And I sure didn't think to ask in the middle of winter. Thankfully, I had put my bridesmaids in sleeveless dresses. Bridesmaids are always a walking time bomb when you put them in a dress they will never wear again - which I had. But at least they were the only ones not in long sleeves. No one fainted and we didn't have to call 911 so I consider the reception a success. There are lots of photos of people with the biggest sweat stains you've ever seen and portions of the video where our dear friends and relations are griping about the lack of air conditioning. It's always been fun for us to watch since we were so excited, we didn't' really notice what was happening at the moment.
And off we went to our hotel for our wedding night. With the Shriners.
Yes, they were staying in my bridal hotel. And let me tell you, the Shriners we were honeymooning with can toss back more than their fair share of libations. And sing. And play the lobby piano.
All. Night. Long.
In summary, best laid plans - yada, yada, yada. But, something must have worked because 23 years later, we are still going strong. And I wouldn't go back and change a single thing about that day.

And what a great story you got out of it!
Happy Anniversary, Girl!
No air conditioning!! Bad bad karma to those folks who did not tell you.
I also got my wedding dress for $100. I resold it for $180. Nice!!
Sounds like a day you'll never forget - Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary! What a great story!
I'm right behind you! But I had the sense to get married in the spring in the South! My sleeves were just like Princess Di's.
What a great story. Are you sure you don't want to show us your dress? :) Happy Anniversary.
I love the story and congratulations on 23 years. That's quite an accomplishment.
Shriners are never not funny. Happy Anniversary!
Honey, the image of Princess Diana in her wedding dress? You had MUCH better wedding karma than she did :))
Happy Anniversary! It gave you stories to tell to your grandkids! I love it!
happy anniversary!
i had a big chunk of family not attend because it was the homecoming game at UT.
i figured if they'd rather go to a butt-whoopin of a football game then i'd rather them go - and i'd save $10 per person that wasn't there!
Happy Anniversary! I had the opposite problem at my reception. It was in the spring so we had beautiful tables set up outside and all over the balconies of the reception hall. And it was FREEZING! Wind like crazy, and twenty degree temperatures. My little dress with cap sleeves... not very warm. I had goose bumps like crazy. So we did a lot of huddling inside, avoiding all the lovely decorations out of doors.
Just like you though, it's made for some good stories. :)
Wonderful story!!!!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
Now that's a great story - certainly one to remember!
Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary and what a great memory!
Love the bed and breakfast! :)
Happy Belated Anniversary!
But every year millions of people are celebrating with you! ...In a less upbeat manner... hmmmm...okay, maybe that isn't the silver lining. Oh well.
Happy Anniversary!
hahaha at the Shriners being part of the honeymoon :) Great story!
What a great story! We had no air conditioning at our wedding either. I remember sweat rolling down my back.
Wow! Happy Anniversary to you Debbie! We must've been picking the right month, minus a day b/c today is my 7-year anniversary! I just wrote a long post about how my husband and I met (online) - very different than most. But still here we are happily married today. Congrats to you both and many, many more!
P.S. - I love Elvis and Memphis!
Happy Anniversary! Here's so many more years of wedded bliss...with or without Shriners!
I would love a beanie with a fan on it, it would solve many of my problems.
So what you are really saying is that you have a dance to Elvis every night?
Best laid plans that go haywire make the best memories! Congrats on your 23rd Debbie.
Ours is August 14 and this year it was our tenth. I've been all nostalgic about it as I've been writing our love story. Congrats to the both of you. Maybe you can invite the shriners to your 25th celebration. ;)
See! This is so much more entertaining to hear than "my wedding was perfect. Everything went off as planned."
You were married in NC, right? Having just suffered through a weekend of heat and humidity I can tell you that I'm surprised that the dress didn't melt off of you!!! Whew.
Happy anniversary, Debbie!!
Many congrats to you both - 23 years is quite an achievement!! Mind you if you could survive that wedding, well.....
happy anniversary!! now you can look at each other and say "we'll always have the shriners"
Happy anniversary. I'm assuming the place was a tad bit nicer than that home you have in the picture!!! Actually, I've been to outdoor weddings in the summertime and it's just miserable. Outdoor weddings can be nice but it's so dependent on the weather...
Happy Anniversary, Deb !
Of course there had to be a story in your wedding events - Life wouldn't have had it any other way, either ! The saying "what doesn't kill ya, makes ya stronger" was obviously referring to your nuptuals or "was it a couple who sweats together sticks together" ?;)
Happy Monday and Long Live The King !
Happy Anniversary a day late to you and your husband. This week is full of celebratory things for me. Today is younger daughter's 7th wedding anniverary, on Wednesday, my first grandchild will turn 12 and we are all going to a neat amusement park near here to celebrate his big day and on Saturday, my crazy son will be 36 years old! All good things to celebrate though aren't they?
Happy Anniversary! What a great story.
Awwww, cool story. Happy Anniversary to you and your hubs. Keep it going.
Happy Anniversary! What a great story - sounds a lot like our wedding in Germany. It was blazing hot and not air conditioning anywhere. Several times I thought I would faint in my wedding gown that had a skirt with what seemed like 100 layers! And then, my family had booked us a room at a romantic hotel, far off the beaten path, which we tried to find (and finally did!) at three in the morning... But I love a good story! And you've got one with your wedding!! :) Silke
No air conditioning, that's the worst. But you found the love of your life and you wouldn't change a thing! Awesome story and one that you can tell again and again.
Happy Anniversary!
Sounds like it was quite an adventure and if you got through that you can make it through the rest!
TN is crazy. I know so many people that schedule their fall weddings around the UT football scheudle in fear of noone coming!
Great post - and a reminder to all the women out there planning weddings. It doesn't matter how fancy or chi-chi your wedding is, it's about being able to look at that day 23 years later and say Happy Anniversary to your husband! Congratulations!
Happy Anniversary!
What a delightful story!!!
Enjoy!
Happy anniversary!
And I don't even know what a Shriner is, really. I've heard of them, but what do they do?
Oh, I love your spirit. Your husband is a lucky man. That was some special day, to be sure.
Happy Anniversary. And I can commiserate with the lack of air conditioning. I got married in July in the Northeast. On a day taht started with rain and ended with hot and humid. And the a/c in the hotel where we had our reception was broken!!! Our pictures are full of sweaty people as well. Including the bride.
Hilarious post and great choice of images. Too funny! Happy Anniversary :)
Congrats! (On the anniversary, not the sweaty, humid, Elvis death day.)
Happy Anniversary!
Love the pic of the Bed and Breakfast!!
I love this story! No one will ever forget your wedding, that's for sure!
Happy Anniversary! We got married the first weekend of hunting season, so many of my cousins didn't come. But, I didn't really notice until they were missing from the wedding video. Oh well.
Funny that you had a picture of Princess Di in the post. Big plans for 5th anniversary. Instead, whole weekend spent around TV. She died (was killed?) on our 5th.
Happy Anniversary!
Who knew back then that you were creating great blog fodder - I mean, memories, of course - that day.
Congrats on your anniversary!
What a story! Happy Anniversary!!
23 years! Fabulous!!
Happy Anniversary! See, you now have stories to tell your kids. About frugality, Elvis and how weddings don't have to cost the down payment on a house to be special and memorable.
I was married in '82. My dress cost $75. My entire wedding cost $2500. And people STILL talk about how much fun they had at the reception. We had 250 guests. I was the first grandchild to get married on either side and my father's only girl. You can only imagine. It was fun, everyone ate well, drank well and had a blast.
My sister in law HAD to have the $5,000 dress and the big expensive wedding. It was BORING.
Sorry to rant in your comments....
What a story. I got hot and sweaty just thinking about it. Happy Anniversary!
You mean Im not the only one who had to plan their wedding around hunting season?
Happy Anniversary!
I kinda wish I had shriners to throw into my wedding story. The only thing close I have is an ex-boyfriend who showed up uninvited.
Oh, I am just sweating thinking about it:) Hope you had a wonderful anniversary!
A couple of years ago..my niece was married. Her reception was outside. It was a scorching 110 +. Unreal. We all thought we were doing well in the heat. WRONG. My 5 year old at the time got heat stroke..104 fever..Scary. However she pulled out of it and has never forgotten that day! Me either..panic.
BTW...the puppet picture has me going back to a sweet memory of the muppets..ahhh:)
loved the story :)
happy anniversary to you two!!
This is a great story! August 16th is my daughter's Bday, I didn't realize it was the same day Elvis died, although I also remember my mom crying about it, too!
Happy anniversary!!
Happy Anniversary! I always love your stories. I always have a smile on my face when I'm done reading. Thank you.
Happy Anniversary!!!
What a crazy story! Shriners freak me out, but only because one ran over my foot during a parade once.
Happy birthday! If it had been perfect, it would have been boring!
And I have to arrange my bday around hunting season and football, as it's in Sept.
Happy Anniversary! I had heard those Shriners were more than meets the eye!
Loved this post, because all that truly matters was the wedding vows. The rest of it makes for a great memory that you can laugh and share with years and years into the future! Fun to read!
Happy Anniversary!
No air conditioning is definitely a rough deal.
Awww...happy anniversary! I think it sounds like a perfect wedding day! And one you can look back on for years and years with a giggle. :)
Hey, I was married in a courthouse, in front of a judge, and I was 4 months pregnant with Autumn. LOL
XOXO
AWWW...except for the sweating part...that sounds fun! Especially the shriners! Hope you partied with 'em. Hope the hotel was a/c'ed for you. AND it makes a great wedding story. I wanna see pics with the sweat stains!
Oh that is hysterical!!!! I loved your pics ~ they certainly gave me a nice visual.
*LOL* I love bumping into the Shriners! What a lovely memory. Happy anniversary (belated)! x
I love it - you had quite the memorable wedding day, even if all those 'memorable' things were unplanned... ;)
Happy Anniversary! :)
Oh! It's working now! I see your blog, I can comment! wheehaw!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
Sounds like you got the tough stuff out of the way early!
Yeah, it's those dates that no-one thinks about that will get you every time.
We had to change ours because of a national schoolboy footy competition. There was absolutely no accommodation available - so we went for the following week. We had a glorious day. It rained on the footy comp.
Serves them right!
I'm a sucker for a good love story :-) Yours sounds like the perfect, all be it hot, wedding. Love it. Here's to 126 more!
xo
Happy Anniversary to you...
Happy Anniversary!!
You made me laugh, because your wedding sounds very similar to my own. Even the wedding gown. I watched the wedding of of Princess Diana and wanted that dress. And, yes I got one very similar...and my wedding day I was dripping with no air conditioner either.
Congratulations! Happy Anniversary.
For further heartwarming murmurings, Elvis-related that is, check out this story in the LA Times: "little people" rescued from yhe bad buys in Manilla -- and at least one of them holds the record as the "littlest" Elvis impersonator.

Oh my word Deb, SERIOUSLY?! This is too funny. In a weird, it-could-only-happen-in-the-south kind of way. Memphis on August 16 with all the EP fans is probably like Bethlehem at Christmas for Christians or Mecca for Muslims... converging from all corners of the earth.
Shows how powerful love is, to make one forget the importance of probably the most sacred day on the Memphis calendar.
Do you now run shrieking whenever you see Shriners? What a truly scary experience. LOL
I'm seriously wondering if I should dig out my wedding dress from 89' and try to sell it for a profit too. lol
Happy Anniversary, it's a wonderful milestone!!
I hear ya, honey. We had an outdoor wedding in June in Southern Virginia. Whoooweeee! It was hot. 98 degrees in the shade.
But it's like the old saying about dress rehearsals, right? The worse the dress rehearsal, the better opening night? Same thing... the worse the wedding and honeymoon, the better the marriage ;)
Worked for us!
You are too funny.
I love this.
Happy Anniversary! Here's to 23 more years.
Happy Anniversary!!! Congratulations. I eloped so I can't claim such great memories... :(
lovely story!Hope you had an awesome annversary!
You tell such a great story!
Happy anniversary!
That's an awesome story. Happy anniversary!
Ha! What a funny story...no A/C!!
Happy Anniversary!
Your wedding sounds wonderful (and entertaining!) Happy Anniversary! You are one of the very few people I know married longer than me (20 for me....) you really ARE insane, I know cause I am too. LOL
Happy anniversary! August 16 is also Madonna's birthday --Whoopee! And also my son's birthday. He just turned 18.
I love that not only Elvis but the Shriners graced your wedding day!
Happy Anniversary. Seems to be some of that going around.
What a great story! Happy Anniversary!!
I'm a little late wishing you Happy Anniversary!!
Happy anniversary!
Oh what a rich story. I wish I had been invited. I bet it was a blast. Did the preacher dress like Elvis?
This is awesome! Happy Anniversary. I love crazy story so much more than normal, boring ones. On our wedding night, the girl who checked us into the hotel told us that our room was haunted because a girl had died in there. Didn't keep us from having a blast! ;)
Happy Anniversary! I love your blog (especially your fun pictures to illustrate your wedding story!). I will have to come back and visit again. August 16th, is a day that many people always celebrate because of Elvis, just imagine they are celebrating your anniversary with you!
LOL! Happy Anniversary! I hope all of your years are as interesting as the start! Ha!
thanks for visiting my blog!! I love your story..so unique :) I can't wait to read more!
Happy anniversary! My 20th was on the 11th - another thing we have in common - Aug. anniversary. LOVE the photos you put with the story!
That is hilarious! You always know how to put your stories and always love the pics you include! Too cute!
Hugs - Tiff
We got married at the beginning of August in the outdoor garden of a restaurant. Can you say stupid?? I was dripping sweat the whole day...I had to keep running into the bridal dressing room to stand in front of a fan they had provided me with in there.
Besides all the sweating, it sounds like you had a wonderful wedding day!!!! Happy anniversary!!!
You are too funny, Happy Anniversary! I wish you many many more to come.
What a great memory!
Happy Anniversary.
Great story! And what a lovely memory.
Sandra
clearly, you should have sued for lack of air conditioning ;-)
Well congrats to you.
I had a little laugh at your expense. Hope you dont mind.
You always have the best pictures with your posts!!!
BTW, I dont go places with no AC. Ever. And never will. NEVER I TELL YOU!
Blessings!
Amanda
Heh, heh---happy 23rd!!
Sounds perfect! At least your MIL didn't come over to visit after the wedding like mine did. Aaaah memories.
That's an awesome story!
Of course you wouldn't change a thing. Some people would look back and wish and what-if...even if the house HAD had AC and the Shriners HADN'T played piano all night..
Am I making any sense? You're a good woman, and you don't whine. There. (Sorry...It's been another one of those Reading Weeks, and I can't seem to make sensical things come out of my face. ;-))
Happy Anniversary! And it's a good thing you didn't need to get a solid night's sleep with all those Shriners in the hotel!
Happy Anniversary (a little late)!
happy anniversary! elvis and priscilla have nuthin on you guys!!! they didn't have much on anyone really!!!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. What a delightful post. Happy Anniversary! I am sure you were a beautiful bride in your $100 dress!
Shriners make me smile : )
