Picking Cherries When They're Ripe

I am a practical woman. Even my husband says so. I don't really have the romantic, sentimental side that so many people have. I tend to think that particular aspect of my personality was greatly shaped by being raised by a father who, as one of 16 children in an impoverished family, didn't ever have a choice not to be practical.
When family members give me gifts, I am always appreciative. I also explain to them that I will use the gift. And I do. Whether it is something brand-new from Target or a 150 year old family heirloom, I use it. As often as possible. Especially the family heirlooms. I've always felt that a little of a person's spirit ends up in a cherished and well-used item and I enjoy feeling a connection with an ancestor when I use items.

My grandmother's old bowl? On my kitchen island right now full of clementines. My husband's great-grandmother's blanket chest? In my bedroom holding linens and being opened frequently. All through our house are items we have been lucky enough to inherit and use. We also treasure them.
When my children were babies and were gifted with delicately smocked or embroidered clothes, I let them wear those clothes. On any ordinary day. They spit up in them and on them. Diapers leaked in them. Some folks probably consider that a crime but every time my kids wore them, I derived intense pleasure seeing them being used.
I really don't believe in saving things. What good are material items if they aren't used and cherished? In my opinion, that is how memories are made.

Which brings me to my cherries. We have a very small cherry tree we started from a cutting from my father's prize tree. This spring, it was finally mature enough to produce some cherries. Maybe 15 cherries. My husband noticed the cherries about an hour before our youngest child was due home from school.
We waited.

When he came home, my husband immediately told him to go pick the cherries and eat them. He raced to the tree.

Not a single cherry was left on that tree. Birds had eaten them all in that solitary hour we had waited.

Never again. I will extend my enjoy life as soon as you can policy to all aspects of our lives from now on.

Life is too short to save experiences for later.

Damn those cherry pickin' birds....

A valuable lesson...

A wonderful reminder!

I use my heirlooms, too. And my 'good stuff'.

I like this.
I commit a crime every day because I eat with my sterling silverware. My paternal grandparents have always seemed very strange and unfamiliar to me. They would give me a silver spoon or fork or knife every christmas and birthday - or maybe a set of them since I probably have 12 of each. I'm always happy when someone wants to give me something but to be given a spoon when you're five is a little bit "meh?" - especially if you're not supposed to use it until you're 30. Well, I ran out of regular silverware and thought hey, I'll use the fancy ones and now every meal is a bit fancier than it was. I also drink out of crystal glasses.

Nice post. I too do not save anything "for good".. I use everything, all the time. If something gets broken (my crystal champagne flutes from my wedding) so be it. They were broken while enjoying them - not while sitting on a shelf.

o, no the cherries! great post...as always!

You're right - life is too short not to enjoy it.

Sweet as, well, cherries. I use everything too. The Velveteen Rabbit made quite an impression on me when I was young. I extended it's gospel to every inanimate object in my possession. Then and now.

Too bad about the birds. I bet they enjoyed those cherries. I love the sentiment to enjoy everything now.

I'm guilty of waiting too. Thanks for the fresh reminder.

I use my "good" dishes every chance I can get. The chips and scratches add character.

Too bad about the cherries. We have some ripening raspberries in the garden now and I make the girls go out everyday to pick them before the birds and bugs do.

Susan said...

Freakin birds! I would have done that too, since picking the cherries is certainly a big part of the fun. Maybe sit there with a sling shot?

We use everything around here, too. My mom saved a bunch of our old dresses, which was fun to see Sugarplum wear. I feel like I should save some of hers, but it's much more fun to pass on to other friends. Or wear the daylights out of the first time around.

I totally agree with you Debbie - both on not being a sentimental person and enjoying life to the fullest now. I'm a very practical girl and I always think of how I can use something or make it work toward my/my family's advantage. Great lesson and great reminder for all of us!

autumnesf said...

Couldnt agree more. Although I do have those passed down things that you really just dont use every day...like the huge punch bowl or glass ice bucked or pewter pitcher. Look cute in the china cabinet but really no daily practical use.

I love these thoughts. I have also fell victim to waiting for the cherries...those darn birds are quick!

i'm married to a packrat, so we have a rule of our own - if you haven't used it in a year, you don't get to keep it.

but i could learn a great lesson from that, never save the fancy $10 a plate dishes. today is special.

What do you use that creepy looking case that Aunt Norma gets you for Christmas?

What a great reminder. I am going to print out that saying and hang it up!

love this!

i grew up in one of those suburban developments where every house had a family room, a living room, and a dining room, and i think we were the only family that ever used our dining room. we ate there regularly--with the silver and the fine china. why store it away?

Under the Influence said...

What an awesome reminder. I often get so caught up in keeping things together that I forget to enjoy what is going on around me.

On the other hand, I am not one to put things away for "later" or a more appropriate use - I do use it NOW or wear it now. It results in me being all dressed up with nowhere to go or being overdressed at times, but damn, I look good on those occasions! :)

Franzine Kafka said...

good post. i always save things for later, to a ridiculous extent. all of my favorite clothes sit in drawers, unused.

I'm sorry about the cherries. Darn it. My parents have a very prolific cherry tree, but those darn birds get most of them every single year.

How did I know you were going to say the birds ate them even before I got to the end of your post! Those birds will get you every time.
Good lesson learned.

I did that with baby clothes! Someone would give me something so precious that I didnt' want baby to poop on it. So I saved it away for a special occasion and usually didn't think of it when the special day arrived and they wore somethign else. Then by the time I remembered, they had outgrown it!
Darn.

Agree with you by the way, stuff should be used. You know what I really love? Wine stains on tables, gives them that lovely, homely feel.

Elle said...

So true! I guess the birds knew better than to wait, huh?

Jeni said...

My Mom was notorious for "saving it for good" and as a result, many of the pretty dresses my aunt bought me only got worn a couple of times before I outgrew them. With my kids, there was a tiny bit of the "save it for good" but not all that much and with the grandchildren, it's virtually non-existent. With my dishes though, I do hold back on using my grandmother's china -mainly because the two little ones are autistic and things can and do sometimes get thrown. If they don't get used while these kids are little, then their mother will have that china for good when they will perhaps be better at handling things with a tad of care.

Lora said...

What a great reminder. I had a similar experience with tomatoes earlier this summer and now I'm watching the plant like crazy!

Lesson learned, hopefully I remember it :-)

I am the same way...I believe in using it while its yours. It doesnt mean I cherish it any less, it means that it is well loved!

How sad...I'd probably do the same thing again, because picking them is part of the fun!
I do like to bring out the good stuff sometimes, for no special reason. Thanks for the reminder!

I love this. I've started actually using everything I'm given too. My mother is the opposite, and I always ask her, what are you saving it for? lol. I love that you say that's how memories are made. It's true. It's a great attitude to have! Carpe diem, eh? ;)

The dreaded oriels ate our cherries this year. Actually it was an entire oriel family. Three juveniles and the mom and pop. We had maybe 30 cherries this year in our three year old tree. It's not easy come easy go. It's a long and arduous wait and then easy go...to the birds!

The Things We Carried said...

Lovely sentiments expressed here. Those lost cherries while disappointing for your son, served as nourishment for your local critters. Perhaps you'll get enjoyment from watching them in return, when the hang out at the place with the great treats.
