Driving, Comments, Ashton Kutcher, and Potatoes

You know how you have a weekend with only one or two commitments and you have all sorts of things planned in your mind to get accomplished but then your college daughter sends you a text that says "I feel awful. Can you come bring me home?" so you drop everything and drive two hours to get her and two hours home? Me too! Odd that you and I had the same kind of weekend.
Of course, I had conflicting emotions. I was terribly sad she was sick. But thrilled she still wanted her mommy. It is always gratifying to be needed. The entire dynamic of our home is different when she is here. It's sunnier and lighter.

As it is my self-appointed job to teach all of you moms of young kids about your future, let me state unequivocally - they are always able to turn your life booty over teakettle with one simple phone call. Yes, a baby or a toddler can wreak havoc on a schedule. So can a college student. For instance, both of mine are now coming home tomorrow instead of us picking them up Wednesday. So, best I can figure, I have 48 hours worth of living to do in about 18 hours.

The cranberries are popping on the stove even as I type. I have a to-do list so long, it would read better than this blog post. But, isn't that the essence of a holiday - more work than we could ever possibly accomplish? I thought so.I do have time to get a few other random thoughts out of my head that have been rattling around in there for a few days.

*What is up with the comments link being at the top of so many blogs now? Does anyone else besides me think that it odd? I read down to the bottom only to find that I'm participating in a new kind of Where's Waldo search for the comments. I am a person who craves order. Rational thinking. A sense of purpose in the world. This new trend rocks my world. And not in a good way.

*I've decided to surrender to my google reader. Yes, it will always have the upper hand in our relationship. I cannot possibly get down to "zero" on the number of posts in there. It wins. I give up. Oddly, since giving up, it has looked much less smug to me. I highly recommend you surrender as well.
*I'm still trying on the twitter thing. I still don't grasp its purpose. I am open to any and all advice and tutorials. Why do I want to understand it? To fit in. Plus, if Ashton Kutcher can understand it, I have to be able to. I might surrender to my google reader but I'll never surrender to Ashton. A girl has to draw the line somewhere.
*When the pilgrims started this whole holiday based on food, did they realize that the blending of so many different households under one roof for a day would entail the making of so many different potato dishes? I just don't think they were that forward thinking. Or maybe they just didn't care about us southerners and our love for anything we can dig up out of the ground.
The cranberry sauce is smelling incredible so I need to go put it in a dish and lick the pan. I mean wash the pan. Plus, those potatoes won't peel themselves.

Thanks for the warning of the kids needing us still once they leave the house. Twitter will get more interesting the more you use it. Just use it, you'll see. I'll follow you. Reader...when mine gets overwhelming I just mark all as read and start all over again. I can't get through 300 in a day. I've tried, but ain't happening. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Our son has the whole week off of school, so I spent the last two days doing laundry. Happy Thanksgiving!

Have a happy holiday.
I have a daughter staying home today because she's sick. She has a 101 temp. I'm glad I've got the whole week off.

Your Mama/Daughter story has me misty. I think it's the Holidays and feeling homesick myself. I find comfort in the knowledge that my Mommy would come and get me if I asked. Even at 38. Even 900 miles away.

I'm thankful for that.

Enjoy every sweet minute will all your chicks under one roof!!

P.S. I do love me some Ashton Kutcher though - he's yummy, like sweet potatoes with extra marshmallows :-) Happy Thanksgiving dear Debbie!

How sweet that your college aged daughter wanted to be home and have a little tlc from her mom. Enjoy this holiday with all your children under one roof. I will be in your shoes this time next year and it's painful to think about.

I am glad all of your children will be home. I bet it is nice to have them home. I am not looking forward to the day when my little one leaves. I have a long time for that. Great post and thoughts. Happy Turkey day...

Happy Thanksgiving - here's to a full house! Glad to hear that the kids still need us even when they're away at college.

i didn't know you were on twitter! I am following your tweets now. You'll get the hang of it. I didn't understand it at first but it's all good now :)

I agree with the comments thing. I am always so mad that I have to waste my time to find the damn thing! It makes me not want to leave a comment.

Google Reader is my nemesis!!! I will battle to the death!

It's good to know that even when Sophia grows up and goes to college, she'll still want me to comfort her when she's sick. I make my mommy come over when I'm sick!

It sounds so sweet about your college kid. I hope I do the same to my mum - make her feel appreciated and loved - when I moan on the phone! :)

Awe! That's so sweet about your daughter! I hope you have a fabulous week! I'm the same way with a todo list a mile long! And I'm working 8 hour days at the same time... I guess I'll be up late each night.

Good luck with the craziness. I embark on a wild cooking spree tomorrow morning. Man, I love Thanksgiving. (I really do.)

And surrender to Ashton? Death first!

I agree with the comments at the top confusion. WHY??

And as for Twitter, maybe it's a GOOD thing that you aren't on the same wavelength as Ashton Kutcher? Or maybe I'm grasping at straws because I don't get it either.

Am I the last Twitter hold out? Well, I signed up. But, I can't bring myself to use it and get sucked in. Blogging and Facebook are bad enough.

I treat my google reader like a copy of O magazine. Probably full of great stuff, but I know going in I'm not going to get to it all. It's easier than imagining it full of friends waiting to be acknowledged. Far less guilt.

You're right about college kids running your schedule through a wood chipper. And I have a feeling that, just about the time when they're all finished having babies and needing to hijack my routine, my mom will get senile and start doing the same thing from the other end.

I may not be smarter than a 5th grader but I'll knock myself out to be smarter than Ashton Kutcher :-)

I don't get Ashton Kutcher. On any level.

Happy Holidays to you! I think it's wonderful that the house is brighter and happier with your daughter around. I don't think you could give her a better compliment.
I hate the comments at the top too. It's weird. I hate hunting. I'm lazy. Just give me my clicky-clicky.

I've totally noticed that whole top of the post thing. Glad i'm not the only one puzzled by it.

I can attest that kids always need their mommies. I showed up on my mum's doorstep with 24 hours notice earlier this year and i'm *cough* years old. Mommies are always the best. :)

What kind of cranberry sauce do you make that you cook? I have never had that kind, so am curious. We just open a can and put it on a plate...can marks and everything. Yummy. :) I hope you have a wonderful turkey day with your children.

I go gooey just thinking of my grown-up children coming to visit. And Twitter - I'm trying it, but I think unless you have good friends who are on all the time, it's going to stay hard.

Krystyn said...

So glad your daughter still needs you and reaches out to you!

I give in to my reader every once and a while and hit that friendly "mark as all button!" I feel good about it until I realize I did it when somebody announced their pregnancy.

Sorry, I have the comment link at the top, but only if you are on the main page...if you go to a specific post, it's there on the bottom:)

Happy less than 18 hours of living and counting.

I love it that you make fresh cranberry sauce, too - and make it ahead! :) I'll be doing all my 'make ahead' dishes on Wednesday...I could start now, but that would defeat the whole idea of procrastination. ;)

Good to know that kids still need their mommy even after they leave the house. Hope your daughter feels better soon!

Enjoy the family time at Thanksgiving - that's the best!

Thanks for the blog love! You made me laugh talking about the vinegar incident! lol

Wow, funny to see this post just last week my daughter called from College stating she didn't feel good at all...here I am tired as can be running around with a bad back still working with the little one and Boom Mom to the rescue. I guess a mom's job is never done even when they have moved away!

Happy Thanksgiving Diva!

blueviolet said...

Oh...you must do the whole berry cranberry sauce too! I'll be working on those on Wednesday, I think.

When our adult children call and they're sick, they're very much like our little babies and they call us Mommy and such. I know exactly why you went to get them early. :)

I'm mostly Tweeting now just to promote my various giveaways on my blog(congrats. on winning one of mine btw) other then that it can seem kind of pointless. I don't care what people had for lunch - lol.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

We truly are kindred spirits! Seriously my college age kids & the teen still in high school take up way more time than the little ones.

All I can say is be also glad that the college was only a couple of hours away. Last year we had one that was 4 hours away and got sick, not once..but twice.

In all fairness when they were little I was exhausted from running around after them, doing laundry, cooking, etc. Now I'm exhausted from mentally dealing with things. Mentally thinking about scheduling and thinking about how we help them with this or that.

As far as Twitter, you just have to jump in and follow people. Download tweetdeck and you'll be better able to understand the conversations. Jump in and respond to a tweet even if you really don't know the person or even if you think you shouldn't because you are not a part of that conversation.

Debbie you give me hope for those years they may turn you upside down but I'd be the same happy they want mommy!

Look at you go fresh cranberry sauce, sounds delish and I say licking it is almost cleaning right?

Oh google reader you give me a big fat raspberry every morning I thought I could ignore you or give you the bird back ... but for some reason you always get the last word. Just like the boys in my life ... :)

Happy Thanksgiving Debbie!

Debbie~I'm strolling in to catch up and especially to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving!
It's such a wonderful time to stop and reflect on all those we cherish and are truly grateful for.

Even though our Thanksgiving is very small in number, with hubby and son (we don't count the cat cause she doesn't like turkey). We don't scrimp on the menu...from appetizers to desserts wit several carb loaded dishes in between! We will be enjoying tryptophan playoffs too!

Sweet Holiday wishes,
Sara

We spent our Thanksgiving with miss Franzine Kafka...and her DELICIOUS turkey and mashed potatoes. i brought the sweet potatoes with marshmallows...and rolls...and pies...and creamed cauliflower (which isn't traditional, but SHOULD BE, because it is OH so delicious as long as nobody mistakes it for runny mashed potatoes. Just sayin'.)
