I Really Need an iPod

I did a lot of driving this past weekend. Three hours down to get my son, three hours back. Then repeat two days later. Yes, I realize I would drive less if I bought him a car. He reminds me of that all the time. And if you've been sent here by him to encourage the vehicle purchase, tell him Hot Wheels are still where it's at.
When I spend that much time in the car, especially the legs of the trip where I was alone, I listen to the radio. It helps to keep me awake. Plus, I am that fool you see singing at the top of her voice as she travels down the interstate. I sound great in a car. I've never quite figured out why I don't sound that good anywhere else. Odd.
I heard some great songs. I am a big fan of the classic rock and sometimes I would be lucky enough to pick up a great station coming through loud and clear. I will listen to light rock too. But no rap. And no country. Yes, I do live in Tennessee. Thanks for pointing that out. But no, we don't all listen to country music. Or wear camouflage. Or drive pick-ups with a dog in the back. There's me and two other people that don't do those things.
And I do listen to the radio. I don't own an iPod or Zune or any other mp3 player. And I don't even understand satellite radio. So, I mostly surf the radio for stations.

I heard Christmas music. One station was playing only Christmas music. On the second weekend of November. Now I love me some Christmas and Christmas music. And I'm a big believer in keeping the Christmas spirit year-round. Inside. Early November is pushing the songs in my book.

And have you noticed that disco music is played more now than it ever was in the disco era? I came of age in the disco era. Donna Summer was my hero. Loved the Bee Gees. But that little dalliance with disco lasted but a couple of years. Then disco died in a big way. No CPR could have saved it. Except, now it is back. And I never noticed back then just how high those falsetto voices were. How did that ever get popular? And why is it played constantly on "flashback weekends"? Surely we have other things to flash back to as well. But the worst, the absolute worst, was when one station decided to play "Welcome Back Kotter". Can anyone tell me why that song was ever played on the air? We don't hear the Brady Bunch theme song or I Dream of Jeannie. Whoever thought "Welcome Back Kotter" was radio worthy? And why did it get stuck in my head?
For hours. And hours.

Which brings me to my question. What songs annoy you when they get stuck in your head? One Sunday, walking into church, I promise you that the song "I Like Big Butts" started up in my mind. Do not ask me why. I do not know. Anyway, that song was in there all through church. (I'm sorry, God.) Since that time, that song has popped into my head more times than I care to admit.
So, give me some other horrible songs I can get stuck in there. I want to hear your worst playlist. Come one, I can take it.

A few years ago I had a coworker who would call his son at home, Sing "it's a small world after all..." and hang up the phone. Poor kid! AS if the ride itself isn't bad enough...having the song stuck in your head all day has to be some form of unusual punishment!

Tell your son that not having a car at school helps build character! My parents gave our son a car when he was 15, but we didn't let him take it to school until he was a junior.

I listen to the radio, too.

I hate when I'll get a song stuck in there that I don't know all the way through - so I'll just keep hearing the same little snippet on a loop...

As for the worst, oh, I don't know - whichever one is jammed in there at the time always seems like the worst. But maybe I can finally admit this to you now: I can't smile without you...

Myhusbdan and I play this game where if you are complaining about having a song stuck in your head (usually a kids song) we start singing it to remind the person that it could be so much worse!

"lif ein plastic, it's fantastic!"

My child had a car when she went to college. I'd never do that again.

My boss loves to get "Santa Baby" in my head but the worst for me is any song when I can only remember the chorus and nothing else!! Lately it has been Disney Movie Songs, so random especially since I am no a mom yet.

I'm Too Sexy. Remember that one? I'm too sexy for this song!

Donna Summer is STILL a hero to me. I've noticed her getting more air play lately too.

Oh.....and that Vinny Barbarino..........mmm mmm good.

I started listening to book in the car when my son was in jr. high because he never read...and I just couldn't handle that. It stuck with me.

And I hate it when that "I'm too sexy" song gets stuck in my head. Especially since I'm not! LOL!

Why did you do this to me Debbie?

Now I will hear this song all day in my head..."I want to take a ride on your disco stick".

I've shared, now you too can have two songs rolling around in your head! ;-)

I know I think I need one too.
Debbie,

I have the Spice girls song If you want to be my lover I think or You know you want something like that. I do not have an ipod but those are some crazy songs...

Won't you say you love me too!

"I'm Too Sexy" for big butts. Just so you know. Even though I might actually possibly HAVE a big butt. But I'm definitely too sexy for this shirt. And too hot. Someone get me some "Ice, Ice, Baby." Or maybe I just need to go to the "Wild, Wild West." Although I'm not sure if I want to go there because - my lands! - "Who Let The Dogs Out?" out there.

I agree....too early for Christmas music.

The song HEY DEANIE by Shaun Cassidy is always running through my head....so I finally bought it on iTunes the other day.

Why don't you just get an iPhone...it has an iPod built in.

I just went to the hairdresser and had to suffer 2 hours of 70's revival (the bad stuff). My very least favourite being the Carpenters with 'We've only just begun' over and over and over........... wot's a Zune????

mama-face said...

That song gets stuck in my head as well!!! It is so twilight zone-y to read a post and be nodding yes yes yes the whole time. Disco? Complete agreement.

YES, you must get an ipod. Anything with an i in front of the name is fabulous.

Meg said...

Um, let's see...

1. Any music for kids.
2. Blink 182
3. I'd add that Miley Cyrus song that was stuck in my head the other day, but then I'd have to admit I went into Forever 21, but that's not going to happen.
4. One Less Lonely Girl by Justin Bieber (Puh-lease, he's like 10 years old.)
5. Poker Face by Lady Gaga. (I actually like her, but that song seems to get suck in my head more than others.)

Ps. How odd you mention disco. I spent more money than I care to admit on iTunes last night downloading 70s disco.

Worst playlist:
I can't stand the Natasha Bedingfield song "Unwritten" and I think I may be the only person alive who doesn't like that new Owl City song "Fireflies." Or-if you're talking Christmas music, the "Christmas Shoes" song. Gross.

Janet said...

How about "The Thong Song"? That recent episode of Glee got that one stuck in my head for a while. Thank you very much.

And seriously, satellite radio is AWESOME. I thought it was terribly frivolous until my boyfriend gave me one three years ago when my local radio station switched to ALL Christmas music in NOVEMBER. Now I don't know how I lived without it.

foxy said...

I am also one of those people that belts it out while I'm driving. I get all kinds of strange looks. And I love me some disco!

Well, now I've got "I like big butts and i cannot lie" in my head, so thanks for that Debbie! Ha...

were you in k-town when you heard the Christmas music? our local Christian music station is doing "Christmas previews" on the weekends from now until thanksgiving, when they switch over 100% to Christmas music.

IMO Christmas music is strickly for after Thanksgiving.

Hrm....worst playlis?

CHILDREN'S SONGS. Seriously - I Been Workin' on the Railroad? All day long? Yeah...

The absolute WORST is when one of Lo Gung's "cantopop" songs will get stuck in my head. Because I know the tune, and have absolutely NO idea what they're saying...as it's all in Chinese. (Yes, I speak Chinese...but the words when you sing or write are different...like Shakespeare to Tom Clancy.)

Like Laura, I get Disney songs in my head and can't shift them all day. Currently it's songs from The Little Mermaid, which I sang all the way home from work today. Fellow commuters stuck in the same traffic jam were undoubtedly perturbed by the sight of me thrusting upwards through imaginary waves, as I flapped my tail and sang about my desire for legs.

I don't actually mind the song, but once I hear it, I CAN'T. STOP. SINGING IT. It's Adam Sandler's "Lunch Lady". You know it? "Sloppy joe... Slop, sloppy joe!"

I heard a little girl in my neighborhood singing Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA" while walking my daughter yesterday... and I can't stop singing it today! BLASTED CHILDREN! (just kidding)

I have an iPod, but I haven't really used it since getting a car with Satellite Radio. It's only $10/month, but soooo worth it!

My worst is "Que sera sera" and did you really have to remind me of it?

I love driving alone. I tend to listen to talking programs most of the time (around here we can pick up BBC Radio 4 on long wave and I love it), alternated with cheesy eighties and nineties stuff.

Lol. I sound good only in the car too when it comes to singing and only when I'm along. Lol. But... I do like Country. And I love Christmas music, any time of the year, it's good for me!

And wow, what a song to have going to church. Hehe. As for what song irritates me the most? The latest one that Greg heard, because he goes into REPEAT mode and has to sing it over and over and over and over and over again until I say, "CHANGE THE CHANNEL." (Meaning, pick a new song.) Lol

Bad songs, oh gosh there are so many. Currently the worst one I've hear is Love Games by Lady Ga-ga ("Don't think too hard, this beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick") ug I hate that one!!!!!

Incidentally I sound like an angel singing "a broken wing" in the car but my children refuse to sing along and also now have removed this song from my ipod. Hmph.

Love me some Bee Gees! I grew up listening to them because they were a favorite of my dad.

As for "I Like Big Butts," my husband does a killer karaoke version. :D

Hmmm...songs I hate?
Pretty much anything by Lady GaGa. What an awful voice. Taylor Swift? Not impressed. Her songs all sound the same.

But right now? My most hated song?

Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus.
