Shaking Things Up Around the House

You know how you can get those wild ideas at times that concern either moving every piece of furniture in your house to another position, redoing some room top to bottom, or better yet - a combination of the two ideas? And you know that look that your husband gives you when you decide to share those fantasies that are running around inside your head? That look that tells you without a single word that he is not planning to help you with any of the task and doesn't begin to understand why the house cannot remain exactly the way it is until the day you die?Well, guess what. My husband doesn't give me that look. No sirree. Not only does he not give me that look, he listens intently to my ideas and then says, "Honey, I think that sounds like a great plan."
I know. I won the spouse lottery. That is why I don't play any other lottery games. Lightning really doesn't usually strike twice.

My latest house inspiration came about a week ago when I decided it was time for our main bathroom to get a little sprucing up. And by sprucing up, I mean rip out everything except the tub/shower and the toilet and start all over. By ourselves. Even though we often need help opening a gallon of milk.I want to pull up the hideous vinyl floor, lay down a sub-floor, cut slate tile and install it, sand and paint the walls, redo the vanity, replace the hardware, rip off the vanity top, and here is the tricky part - pour a concrete vanity top and install a vessel sink and new plumbing.

Again, with absolutely no expertise or experience. And my husband thinks it is a great idea. He's ready to rent the tile saw and the concrete mixer. He's embraced my ideas and googled all about them. We're going to start mid-January after the kids go back to college and the Christmas stuff gets packed up.

Yes, it's a pretty safe bet we'll be in over our heads and make a holy mess out of a large chunk of that room.

But, we sure will have a lot of fun in the process.

And no, you can't have him. He's all mine.

Oh my...that is QUITE a project. Are you sure you aren't doing this for blog fodder? *grin*

What is it with you women and "sprucing"?

I mean,

Honey, I think that sounds like a great plan.

rachel... said...

Okay, I get it, he's yours. But could I borrow him? I've decided to do some sprucing of my own. It started with rearranging bedrooms, and now I've decided to redo our main bathroom upstairs myself, too! Although I'll probably just be painting and getting new fixtures. But I'll be 8 months pregnant. Awesome blog fodder!

Good luck! Can't wait to see the new bathroom!

I am with you all theway girl. I just informed my husband that 2 rooms need to be repainted before the holidays! He looked at me and said "Sure what color?" Gotta love him

My guy is the same way, always up for whatever. However, I don't think I'd ever have the confidence to do the concrete sink myself. Wow! I'm impressed!!

Sounds like plenty of excitement ahead ;) We're planning to move our stairs next year.......

My husband has tried to be handy - he just is not great in the handyman department. This month he hired a friend to come in and do all my little fix jobs - it made me so happy to see the garage shelves finally go up that I bought 5 years ago. yes, five.

Lucky you! I can't even get my hubby to anything! Stopping by from SITS.

Suzi said...

Can he come to my house and finish the fence? It's been, oh, going on 2 years since the process has started. We want a dog and I won't let the boys get one til the fence is finished.

Barbaloot said...

Wow-can't wait to see pictures of the process. I would NEVER have the creative ability to think of something like that-let alone do it so you're already way ahead of me:)

Sounds fun actually. I love redecorating. I wet my pants just putting up a new shower curtain and bathroom rug. I can only imagine the passion you'll feel for that wonderful husband when you see him break out the power tools! ;-)

Nope. Lightening doesn't always strike twice. Hold on to that keeper! :+)

As always, love your writing. Very fresh and witty!

Awesome!! We did the same thing last night with re-arranging our furniture in the living room. Next year (January) comes the bathroom in our bedroom. It's so much fun to dream isn't it?

My wife usually does this to me. I plead No, No, No. But that doesn't seem to matter.
I'm pretty sure we are laying a hardwood floor in the living room very soon.

THAT is some project!

My husband is pretty happy if I don't ask him to repaint a room after about two months because I decided I don't like the color!

Secretia said...

He's still getting the best of the bargain I suspect. ha!
So then, live happily ever after Forever.

Morgan said...

Good luck with the renovations and I hope my BF lives up to the high standards your hubby has set! I will be referring this post to him shortly... ;)

Meadowlark said...

In general, mine only gets excited about projects where he can use or buy power tools. When he installed the wiring for the hot tub, he added an extra 50 amp outlet "for the welder". Um, honey, we don't have a 50 amp welder, we have a little one." "Well" he replied "right NOW we only have a little one...." Sigh, that's how it goes around here. Good luck on your project and looking forward to pictures!

Debbie in Nashville said...

This will be interesting!!

No, really I think you will find you can do more than you think.

When I wanted to put ceramic tile in my kitchen everything I read said to hire a professional. I was freaked out about that, but my boyfriend knew we could do it ourselves. It was hard work, but turned out great and the best part was it was minus the cost of the professional!

autumnesf said...

So I hearby award you with the "wife with greatest husband" award. Do they have such? We should design a button just for your site.

Charlene said...

Wow that's going to be quite the project. Can't wait to read all about it and see the before and after pics.

Yay! My husband is the same way, except he will argue with me about colors. *eyeroll* "No, dear husband, blue doesn't have to be in EVERY room of the house."

Good luck & have fun!

We were going to do poured concrete for our kitchen until we "researched" it. Now I am getting the Caesarstone I wanted in the first place.

Sometimes research is a good thing. Bwahahahaha.

Good luck with your improvements. My husband has been building our house for going on three years now. Uh-huh.

Vodka Logic said...

Admirable but we would be fighting the whole time. Lets see some before and after pictures. :)

Angie Muresan said...

OMG!! Well, I hope you guys don't go at each other with the cut slate tiles. My husband and I would never survive such an undertaking without huge fights about it. I greatly admire you, especially seeing as you have no experience at it.

Oooh, good LUCK with all that! Srsly! I love home makeovers - we're trying to figure out how to afford a complete reno of our bath on our teeny tiny budget. Can't wait to hear about it! (Sounds very modern...) Oh, and it took my father 12 years to finish the hall bath in his house - he started right after I got married & finished it last month - surely you'll do better than that :)

I have the husband that makes the suggestions of redoing our entire home in one night. I am the spouse who gives the "are you kidding me?" looks. But then I get on board cause I'm all for random craziness at any moment.

My best, Lynn

JACKPOT! My gosh, my husband always rolls his eyes, hides, no longer seems to hear, nor speak my same language when I want to rearrange (which I adore doing!) a room. He always says, "I liked it before" and doesn't remember how he reisited that time that WAS before.
This has me thinking about moving some things around :).

Secret Mom Thoughts said...

We've wanted to redo the bathroom for 8 years but fear the mess and expense. We only have 1 bathroom. Good luck. Maybe your experience will encourage me.

I'm trying so hard not to be jealous right now - of the remodel AND the handyman husband...

Kathleen @ ForgingAhead said...

We're a do-it-yourself couple too! Though we manage a few heated discussions in the process. Sounds like your guy is a little bit more agreeable. Have fun!

Dedene said...

Good luck! We never dare do anything because my DH and I are like Laurel and Hardy when it comes to home improvements.
You do have a great hubby!

♥ Boomer ♥ said...

I have a feeling he's hopeful that you'll come to your senses during the holidays ... or that you'll admit to being way too exhausted to start such a massive project until, say, perhaps next spring, when you've rested up.

But oh, no. Your kids will be home from college soon after spring, and time may not allow that project until they go back next fall? Perhaps?

My husband loves projects like this. We started several of them, but law school started and we haven't quite finished yet.

That was three and a half years ago.

what an undertaking!!!

Love redoing rooms..its fun to me!

Happy Holidays!

Wow - I am - VERY impressed! I married a guy like that...but he changed...

Sounds like fun!
Whenever I have ideas like this, my husband gives me the look that says "whatever you want" complete with eye roll. Eventually my parents find out and then my dad phones me to tell me every small little detail that we need to take into account, everything that could go wrong, etc. Then depending on how much I really want it, I do it anyways. (Except for when I was toying around with the idea of redoing our kitchen... then school started.)

Kensi said...

Wow! Pouring your own concrete countertop? Wow...
Kidding...I'm sure it will turn out fine. If it doesn't, at least you'll have quite the story to tell everyone!

and I'm with you on the husband thing...I've got a good one, too!

That is impressive...I come up with some fun ideas but this might be an undertaking I would sign up for...LOL.

Good luck!

gretchen said...

Lucky you! Well, I guess lucky. I think I'd rather have my husband say "what a great idea honey, let me hire someone to do that for you." But, maybe that's not as much fun!

wendy said...

Yowza------that is a big project indeed. And to think hubby is all for it, I think it is the excitment of power tools etc.
will you post before and after pictures??
It is so fun to fix things up, update them, give it some razamataz.
good luck ------and hopefully you'll not kill each other in the process (tee, hee)

Doing a home project together, huh? I'm telling you, it's a good thing our covenants bind us together. When you know you're going to be spending eternity with the guy that just leaned back into your freshly painted wall, then turned around and said, "Uh, what did you do HERE?", makes you think twice before announcing that you are never, ever speaking to him again.

In our world, never, ever is a long, long time!

Good luck!

Good luck! I hope it turns out terrific.

What fun! I have engaged in such projects in the past and they always turn out to be both, "I'll never do that again" AND, "I am so proud of myself!"

Thanks for visiting my blog. You missed the Christmas giveaway page. You might want to go back and enter the contest!

CailinMarie said...

wow! you guys ARE ambitious! A concrete counter top sounds really cool though. I want to know how it turns out! Lucky for me, my man worked in custom homes construction every summer of high school. All I have to say is, "you don't have this tool yet, but if you get it then you could..."
His Christmas list pretty much starts and stops with gift cards to Lowe's and Home Depot!
