Do you remember as a child how slowly life moved? How one day in school could last for weeks and weeks. What happened to that joy? How did life speed up this fast? I blame technology. Especially any kind I don't understand. Now this little nugget of joy that we are celebrating today came into the world while we were still attached to the Navy. He was born in a Navy hospital where Family Physicians did all of the prenatal care unless it was high risk. I liked that. Less interference. More willingness to let the woman's body do what it was designed to do.
Which with this child was to be in labor forever. I went into labor on November 30. He was born December 2. In the afternoon. For years I got confused and thought his birthday was December 1st. I was in labor so long that my primary doctor left to go on vacation. While I was pushing. I am not exaggerating. He tried to stay. Stayed until his plane was taxiing down the runway I think. Of course by that time, I didn't care who came in the room to catch that baby. I was just furious I wasn't leaving to go on vacation too. After three short hours of pushing, out came my little angel who has done very few things the easy way from that day forward. I asked my husband to order a pizza while they were still tending to me in the delivery room. That was probably the hardest I have ever worked in my life.
Then I did something brilliant. Something wonderful. I made my husband spend the night in the hospital room with us. Oh sure, I think that is commonplace now. It wasn't back then. Plus, we had two 2 year olds at home. But, his mom was there with them and I knew where he was needed.About the 15th time they came in that night to wake us all up to see if we were OK, words came out of my sweet husband's mouth that I had never heard from him before or since. Must be the genesis of that "cuss like a sailor" saying. First light of day, we were packing it up and heading home with our little December baby.

Who is now 16. Tell me again how that is possible.
*On a little sidenote, a wonderful fellow blogger and friend, Joanna Jenkins, has interviewed me over at The Fifty Factor. And, she's even giving away $25 to a lucky reader who comments over there and over here. So, since you're here anyway, you might as well go there, comment, and maybe win a little holiday cash. Good luck!

Happy Birthday to your middle child! Congrats on surviving and thriving in those glorious 16 years. You're an inspiration and I hope I'm as wise and witty as you are when I get to that point.
Is the middle child syndrome really true? Does he walk around saying, "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha"?
Isn't it amazing to look at our little people and see the adult they are becoming???? My middle is only 14 but there are days that it blows me away. Luckily the youngest is just starting school so I have a while before she amazes me too. LOL!
Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen! Another licensed driver. It does all pass much too quickly.
Sounds like it just happened yesterday. Happy Birthday, December baby! Tell your mama, "thank you!" and give her a big hug! That's quite the birth story!
I agree with you--how is time passing so quickly?! I look back and think how I thought labor would be the most painful part about having kids---I'm telling you, there are some days I'd rather be in labor again than get my teen and pre-teens to clean their rooms, or something horrible (ha) like that. But, it's worth it. All of it. The labor and all the other stuff, and I wish time would slow down so I could do it longer.
Happy Birthday.. I think time does fly by..
Happy Birthday to your Sweet 16 year old! And...might I add, you don't look a day over 18 yourself!
Oh darling Debbie you can even make the hell of a long labour hillarious.
Happy birthday to your dear boy. I guess driving will be coming next.
Love Renee xoxo
Happy 16th. I think that child is lucky you'll still talk to them after 3 days of labor!
Happy Birthday! And what a day for you, filled with all those special memories.
Isn't it crazy, how we remember the food? I called my sister, who was driving to the hospital just after my second delivery, and requested a foot-long sub with chicken, bacon, cheese and ALL the vegetables. I can still hear her husband say in the background, "D@mn! She's gonna eat all that?" And darn tootin', I had that whole sucker down in minutes.
happy birthday Mr. Middle. And do we ever forget the birth stories?
That is one long labor! Happy Birthday to Middle Child!
Aaaawwww......!!! What a great post! Happy birthday!! Wow.
It goes by fast doesn't it? Happy Birthday to your 16 year old.
sweet memories! and how fast time flies with children...thanks for stopping by my blog
What a great labor story! If only you could have known then what you know now (blogging and all) would it have eased the pain (just a little) to know it'd be great in print some day?
Happy, happy birthday to your son!
Happy Birthday to the middle child! I am about 4 years behind you and I know it will fly by.
My Hubs stayed one night with the first baby in the hosp. and then never again. I dismissed one technician and told her to not come back.
This was a joy to read! Happy birthday to your lil one!
Time flys...my oldest will be 29 the 19th of this month with two boys of her own. Enjoy her now cause before long she will be a mom!
Pam
They grow and change much faster than the parents. Being more or less carefree, they mature as we work our life routines.
Secretia
awww 3 days?! oh man...they better love you for that!! lol...and now i love you even more because our kids share birthdays!!! hope you have an awesome day celebrating!!
Great story! I mean, I'm sorry you had to live through it (the labor part, not the having a great kid part), but I really liked reading it. :)
My husband was like that with our second - I think it took everything he had not to throw a shoe at the nurses. Or a chair.
Do people without children feel like they are caught up in this redonkulous time warp to? Everytime I celebrate one of my kids birthdays I'm freaked out by how quickly time is passing. Yikes. And they are still really little (like newborn and 1 and 4). Sigh. I have the feeling this rip in the space-time continuum is going to get worse before it gets better. IF it gets better. It seems to me time slows down again in the sunset years, but what do I know?
You are an incredible storyteller! I loved reading this...it is filled with love, and laughter!! Happy Birthday to your middle child!!! ~Janine XO
Happy Sweet 16 Middle Child!!!!
The possibility of a labor as long as yours is a big reason why I have NO children. OMG! You are amazing. And then you ordered a pizza! I love that.
Time does fly. My baby niece is now 26 and expecting her fist child in June.
Great post Debbie. I'm off to link your interview up to this post!!! Thanks again.
xo jj
Happy birthday to the middle one.
How do you keep your sanity with 3 teens and 2 almost there?
Thank you for stopping by
Yow! I'm pretty sure that labor & delivery would've killed me. I can only imagine. My baby girl will be 4 next month and I can't figure how that is possible!!
Oh my, I can relate to this post! My boys now tower above me, the eldest takes a size 13 shoe - I look at his carelessly dicarded trainers and (once I stop inwardly cussing at his inconsideration) marvel that the feet that fills them were once housed inside my tummy.
And yes, time is like a snowball at the top of a mountain, it gains more and more momentum with each passing year. Too much so for me (pout). Happy 16th to your lovely boy, the whole world is stretching out before him (smile).
Happy birthday to him, time does fly!
Happy Birthday to your son.
And congratulations on the superb interview with Joanna.
I am impressed with your 628 followers and the number of comments you get consistently.
Also, I hope your Sunday Roast is coming on nicely to follow Joanna, Alix and Margaret.
I have some new questions as well which I will email. ~ Eddie
Happy birthday to your middle baby!
My middle is 22!! The baby is 21!! I would feel old....but I'm not. LOL!
Awww, happy birthday!
At least you have such, erm, memories of his birth.
My mother always liked to remind me of the 36 hours of labor it took to produce me.
You are so right! The timess do fly! My "babies" are 36n and 38! And they've given me gorgeous grandkids!
Happy 16th Birthday to the middle child!
Happy birthday to your middle kid. :)
Thanks for doing the interview on The Fifty Factor :)
Oh my goodness, how I UNDERSTAND your pain..however indirectly. Sweet Myrnie was 24 HOURS IN THE COMING. Me? The younger twin? I was born 90 MINUTES LATER. Seriously.
My sweet BBJ, I swear, was born 36 hours after I started labor. False labor, schmalse labor - it hurt for 36 hours.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR SWEET MIDDLE CHILD!!
I came from Joanna´s and I´m hooked right from the start! I love that we are almost the same age (even though your kids are younger). And I love your sense of humor and wit! I´ll be following you. :)
Happy Birthday to your son!
ah, sixteen. feels like yesterday. what a wonderful age. i hope he gets a big party and a new car. take care.
Oh my goodness...that is one heck of a labor. You definitely deserved pizza and a whole lot more.
Happy Birthday to the middle one.
Time does go too quickly.
Happy bday to your baby!! I can't imagine how I would have coped had the hubs not stayed in the room with me. I didn't even change a diaper until we got home. Way to stand your ground lady!
Yeah, the pizza craving immediately following child birth. Smart move to ask hubby to spend the night in the hospital with you. Nice to have him there to waylay the noise and wake up calls. Best wished to you, the mom who worked hard to bring middle child into the world, and to hubby who had something to do with it, and especially to middle child a great big birthday shout.
Happy 16th Birthday to your middle child! Coming over from JoAnn at Fifty factor! Nice to meet you.
Happy day to you and your child! That is great about the night in the hospital. They do have a way with helping you to WANT to go home quick!
I just left Joanna's blog to visit you and I have come at a good time. A birthday party!! Woohoo!! Happy Birthday to you middle child. May you have a great celebration!!!
Hugs
SueAnn
I hereby bequeath you the "I survived Satanic labor award." Seriously? That's bad.
Happy Birthday to him! 16...is that drivers license time???
Here from Joanne's blog. Happy Birthday to the middle baby!
Pearl
Oh you poor thing...16 years later, GOOD JOB on that delivery!
Happy Sweet Sixteen, too :)
You make me boo hoo. My son turns 16 in June. It makes me get a lump just thinking of it. They grow so fast. The years fly> nanoseconds. Truly.
I always figured the difference in time moving slow or fast was related to how old we were. When we are say 10 we have only experienced 10 years or 500 some weeks so a week is alot longer to us. Now if you are 50 you have gone through well over 2500 weeks and they go by quicker.
Of course what going on during that time has the biggest influence - doing taxes vs. oh say some horizontal activity with your spouse. taxes are a slow drag.
Awe, happy birth-ing day to you. So now, does he get a car?????
I strayed your way after reading your interview on Joanna's blog. I can't believe I've missed you before.
From one December baby (well maybe not baby - but December birthday nonetheless) to another---tell your daughter "Happy Birthday." I was born in a local clinic because there was a hugh snow storm raging at the time. My folks couldn't make it the 45 minutes away to the hospital:)
Come visit me and join in for Crock Pot Wednesday whenever you can.
Hi Debbie, I'm over from Joanna's blog. Enjoyed the great interview and can see why so many people read your blog, including a lot of my friends. Great story and account of of your son's birth. Happy Birthday to both of you!
I loved your interview over at Joanne's place.
My middle child took forever to be born too, but not nearly as long as yours! She took 25 hours and I thought that was bad, She weighed 9'6" so that probably contributed to the problem!
Happy Birthday to your sweet 16 year old!
Happy Birthday- what a great idea-- to tell your child's birth story on their birthday-- I may do that next year!! Thanks for stopping by my blog today!!
Happy Birthday! It amazes me how time flies now. Where does it go? I swear it's a conspiracy.
Wow...two days of labor. When I hear stories like that, makes me thankful for my 2 C-sections, even though I didn't think so at the time! Happy b-day to the boy...
Amazing how all of that work.
Sweat.
And pain.
Seem like nothing at all when they do finally get here.
Happy Birthday to your boy!
Sweet dreams.
My oldest is in Kindergarten and just learned to read. I can't wait to know him at 16.
I take it back, I can wait.
I was cowed by your interview at Joanna's. Cowed? Is that the right word? I have been sorely lacking in giving back by reading and commenting to my readers. I admire the way your run things over here!
It really does go fast! My baby is 26 already. Yikes! Great interview at Fifty Factor. Thanks for sharing the info.
Being a mom is one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. It is truly a gift. But you're right, the years do seem to tick away. Maybe with all of this new technology, someone can figure out how to slow time down a bit so we can enjoy these years more.
Happy Birthday to your middle child.
Happy 16th Birthday to the middle child! :-) Thanks for stopping by to visit me from SITS. Hope you're having a good night!
pk @ Room Remix
Joanna sent me over, and I'm so glad she did! I love your wit!
I also enjoyed the interview. It is so refreshing to read bloggers who are willing to hold the hands of we "newbies" without cackling with laughter! I admire how quickly you have flourished and continue to do so.
Best wishes and Happy Birthday to the middle child!
Liz from noexcuses
I actually found you via Joanna and I'm glad I did.
I can't believe how long you were in labor for - heck, I'm surprised you didn't pass out from pure exhaustion and wake up holding a baby.
Do you remind your son of this labor story on his birthday?
It goes by waaaaay too fast. Enjoy every moment.
Oh - happy birthday to the sixteen year old! I'm sorry, but that amount of time to be in labor is criminal. I would sue him. But not on his birthday of course.
You are so right, the time does fly by.. Oh, I remember labor as it used to be...!
I'm also here from Joanna's blog. I hope that your son has a terrific birthday, after all the work that you put in to bring him into the world...you should celebrate too...with a pizza! I loved this post!
I always made my husband stay over in the room with us too. Fortunately he can sleep through a train wreck so there was no sailor-speak tarnishing those innocent baby ears!
And I do think the world (and time in general) is speeding up. I'm pretty sure it's not an illusion.
I'm stopping by from The Fifty Factor! Great interview over there! I'm a new follower!!!
Happy Birthday to your sweet 16 year old... Strange and a little scary how time seems to speed up the older we get!
Thought I would drop by after reading your interview with Joanna. I really enjoyed the interview, I would like to be as organised as you to be able to deal with all the comments / followers. Isn't it wonderful looking back at the time when our children arrived in our world.
Happy birthday to your middle man!
I cannot even imagine Landon being 16! Well I can, but I cannot believe it's going to be here before I know it!
Happy Birthday to your middle child!
I cannot imagine. I have a hard enough time believing mine is 10.
What a great {true} story! Happy Birthday to your baby! ;) It goes by all too quickly. I'm sure labor didn't seem that way. 3 hours. I can relate, my friend.
How have I not discovered you before? Hmmm...Well your readership is continuing to grow. I'm enjoying what I see!
Hi there.
I had a look around , here from The Fifty Factor, and thanks for being a great place in this blog world.
I'll be back, just so you know.
And I'm going to be honest and say that sometimes it's nice playing with someone my own age. :)
A happy 16th to the middle kid. Yeah, time flies by way way way too quickly.
I know exactly what you mean, as my children get older it feels like minutes ago that they were born. Loved your interview. xv
My baby now has a baby! How crazy is that? Because seriously, I'm still trapped in a 21 year old mind!! And 21 year olds don't have grandchildren!!
Thanks for stopping by my blog!!
I love your story, being a new mom again for the 4th time, the birth story is one of love,.. why would we go through so much,.. and then they are born and we know, we feel it in our hearts like an unanswered question has been answered in our hearts. I am so happy for you and your 16yr old, how amazing and fantastic, I look forward to every birthday because it is just one more way I can celebrate how truly gifted, I have been~ My middle daughter has a different sparkle to her*
May you and all of your children be blessed this Christmas Season!
<3
Happy Birthday MC! MiniMac is only 2 and even though he will be 3 soon, it is with awe I think about all that is ahead. I remember 16 and how wise I felt..only to later realize I knew so very little. And i hope I admitted that to my parents. LOL.
Happy B'Day to the Middle One!
I don't have kids so the years just blend together :-)
Happy 16th to the big guy!
WOW! What a labor story!!!
Happy happy sweet sixteen!
Oh, and thanks for the interview at The Fifty Factor! I entered. :)
Happy Birthday! My oldest just turned 8 and yesterday I was just thinking how in another 8 she'll be 16 - I don't even know where the last 8 went! Time flies :)
I should have tried that trick to get sprung from the hospital so early in the day - took FOREVER to get discharged!
See, I've had two 24-hour labors and I thought that was bad. No way I'd be doing two days. I'd say, too bad. I'm not laboring anymore. Just gonna be pregnant forever. Oh, what's that? NOW you want to come out? That's right, kid. Don't ever forget who holds the cards around here.
Ha.
Feliz Cumpleaños to your not so little boy.
I already loved ya, but the interview with Joanna was awesome. Well done, Rock Star!
Oh, this makes me want to cry. Not because of the horror of being in labour for 3 days, not because of your Dr. leaving for vacation in the midst of your birthing experience... but because of the fact that they grow so quickly. How does it happen? I will never understand. Happy Birthday to your sweet baby!
I had caesarians for both my children and after that I did not feel like even seeing the babies for the first 24 hours never mind having a nervous husband anywhere around me!
But you are so right about how quick they grow up and how much they change your life.
Mine are out of the house now, so enjoy them for a while, then be impatient for them to leave home and then spend the rest of your life waiting for them to come for visits !
Good Luck.
Carol
I really enjoyed this post. Happy 16th to your middle child. What a story to tell about the delivery. I had to laugh when you wrote that at first you were confused about the date of birth being Dec 1st. Wow... long time for labor and the doctor leaving on a vacation? Lol.
Happy birthday to the little guy!! :P
Is he excited?!
Nice post.
Nice post.
Happy Birthday to your 16 year old!
That's awesome what the hubby did at night. I wish mine had done that because I got sick to death of the checking.
Happiest 16th to your child! Best wishes of love, happiness, success, and good health.
I just read your ISP post and it is pretty damn hilarious. Just saying "THANKS!" Debbie for your awesome, funny blog. Love it here.
I can't even imagine them letting you labor that long now.
Now it's, "You need a c-section!"
Happy birthday to your sixteen year old! :)
Ha ha. I love that the doctor left to go on vacation!
That is one LOOONG labor, my friend. WOW.
Happy Birthday to your sweet 16 boy! (late)
Woooooooowwwwwww!!!! That's a LONG labor!!!
Happy Birthday to your baby.
My oldest "baby's" birthday is today. She's 31. :)
I came over from The Fifty Factor. Great interview over there. :)
Your child shares my birthday! Happy Birthday!
Actually having a baby--doing the hardest work a mom can do with her body--is becoming passe. I was there, too. Midwives stood by me, and it was a wonderful thing that lasted way tooooooooo, long. Why she is an only child....
I enjoyed this. You touched my heart.
Yikes on the labor! Somehow I don't think that would have happened in this day and age. You're going to have to update your profile, ya know! Happy birthday to the middle child!
Oh my gosh you have a bajillion comments...you'll probably never see this one! But I just wanted to thank you for visiting Graceful today -- and to tell you that this post cracked me up! Especially the part about you wanting to go on vacation the minute labor was finally done -- too funny. I know, I'm sure it wasn't funny then...but it's amazing what 16 years can do, right? Happy Birthday to your boy!
What?? That is the longest labor EVER!!! You certainly deserved that pizza!!
Great post! I hope he had a happy birthday! My oldest just turned 4 yesterday, I can't even imagine the day when she turns 16!
Well, Happy Belated Birthday...They are young and in your grasp of control such a short time, then they move to California or something like that.
Congrats on the 16 yr old, your story of labor reminded me of the 36 hours I spent bringing my 21 yr old into the world......smiles.
Happy birthday to the both of you, enjoyed your story.
And I came from Joanna's and loved your interview.
Happy Birthday to your middle child! I definitely remember how it was that life seem to be so long as a child. Today I wonder where the time goes.
Happy Sweet 16 (can you say that to a boy?)
Hi, I wasn't going to add yet another comment...but I see your son & mine share the same birthday. Hope he had a splendid day. (I was going to add that same clock to the pic I posted lol).
I think time speeds up once you become a parent. It's easier to see how fast time goes when you are watching this little peanut that you created and grew and loved and raised from the tiniest spark become a molded human being!
Happy (late) birthday to yours!
This is so sweet. Found you through Joanna...and now following.
I so agree that the time just fast-forwards, never stopping to pause, the moment we have kids.
Luv the post and Happy 16th...so cool!
Enjoy!
