Oh Christmas Tree, How Sappy Are Your Branches

Here we are, just two days before Christmas. Like so many of you, I was a little late in getting the Christmas spirit this year. It really didn't fully arrive until my college kids came home. But, I am happy to report that it is here now with a vengeance and we are having a great time.

Except for the present situation. And no, I don't mean the fact that the gifts are a little leaner than some years.

I have a thing about my presents. I like the wrapper to match my den. Now try to keep in mind that I am a decorating failure. My idea of decorating is that if it fits into a frame, it is suitable for hanging. Wherever. And if a kid made it, display it with pride for the rest of your days. There is no style here. There is happiness though.

So why do I get my granny panties in a wad over the wrapping? Because my den is the best shade of pear green I've ever seen and I love red accents. Which is just screaming "Christmas paper". And this year, unlike years in the past where I take a sharpie marker and write who the gift is to directly on the paper (oh yes I do), I made little gift tags with holes punched in them and tied them onto my packages with cute red or green yarn. (All while humming "brown paper packages tied up with string" on a daily basis. I love that movie.) If I tell you my gifts looked great under my tree, it would not be bragging. It would just be the truth.

Until the tree sapped them.

We always cut a live tree from the best tree farm and have a great time doing so. Live trees bring such a beauty to a home. They smell great. They are always a little different in shape and size and fullness. And they bring that best aspect - the unexpected.

This year, my unexpected was that I looked down and my packages were drenched with sap. I'm not talking about a little drop or two. Oh no. My tree has been oozing sap like crazy. On almost every gift under there.

Since many of the gifts for my kids are books, I panicked just a little. It's one thing to get a shoe box covered in sap and quite another for a paperback book. So, all the packages have been lovingly moved out from under the tree and placed in the corner of the room. So sad. Gifts in time out.

As annoying as this is, it isn't as bad as the year we had a freakishly warm December and actually wore shorts to cut our tree. We hauled it home, placed it in its stand, and covered it with the (homemade) ornaments we treasure and love. I wrapped the gifts and piled them under the tree. Ah, Christmas.

Three days later I noticed something weird going on over there. Closer examination revealed that that tree cut in such warm weather had brought in some rather live additions which were now crawling all over my packages and even up onto the ceiling. I had to take the gifts out from under the tree to kill the bugs.

I believe I may have just single-handedly caused the sell of artificial trees to rise by double digits.

I like a little unexpected in my holidays. And I like to flaunt convention. I enjoy rather creative packaging for our gifts as well. Such as the year I wrapped every single gift in a shoe box.

Oh yes I did.

Shirts, coats, toys - it didn't matter to me. I had been saving those boxes for years for all of those times you get a note home from school to send in a shoe box. My kids still talk about that year. Drove them nuts since they couldn't figure out what anything was ahead of time.

I hope there is some fun and unexpected surprises in store for each of you this year. Really, life is more fun when it's unpredictable.

Merry Christmas.

*On an exciting note, at least for me, I now have a companion blog, Suburb Sanity Reviews and Giveaways, which will contain reviews and giveaways (the title probably confused you. So ambiguous.) If you'll pop over there in the next week or so, you can comment to win a great cookbook. A little belated Christmas gift for yourself.

Gifts in time-out = sadness. I miss real trees, right up until I read things like that paragraph about the bugs. *shudder* Merry Christmas, and hey - thanks for the laughs. You make my days happy.

My kids always wanted to do popcorn chains and cookies on the tree so one year I relented. We live in the tropics so we watched our ornaments march out the door on the backs of ants. We had to spray the tree, which was artificial.

I remember having a real tree when I was a kid...and what a mess it made. We had pine needles everywhere. We have a fake tree. But like you, I try to make my wrapping match (for me, it's the tree I'm matching). Unfortunately, we have my niece and nephew's birthday and my boyfriend's daughter's birthday around the same time and it's just easier to keep the gifts under there until everyone's in town and with us...and the birthday wrapping doesn't match the theme. So I've given up!

Suddenly I don't feel so bad about my cheap, plastic, white tree.

You do have some good tree stories! I can't believe you're going to keep up with 2 blogs - it's all I can do to keep up with one. We're hoping our college boy will come home today. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Candy loose around the decorations is another potential nightmare of bugs etc.

I have spent years writing names on presents with a Sharpie too. This year I cut little tags and I even got to use BOWS! WooHoo! We got a live tree for the first time and you made me panic and go inspect my packages...we are ok so far...no sap.

Merry Christmas!

I've heard some pretty funny (or ugly) stories about things people have brought home in their live trees. The sap must have added a wonderful Christmas smell to all your beautiful and homey decor.

Poor little gifts. At least they are pretty sitting in time out! Merry Christmas!

I kept scrolling down looking for a picture of your matching presents and tree!!!

The only positive of the sap on the gifts is that it's not on your floors.

Okay, that might not have made you feel better, but I was trying.

Just add the sapping episode to your collection of Christmas tree stories! Nothin' wrong with that!!

Merry Christmas Debbie! And Happy New Year too :)

I like all my gifts to be silver, white, or blue. They aren't. I have a few UPS boxes under there right now. But now sap as of yet!

We have a real tree, but don't put presents out until Christmas Eve so no sapping on presents but then again we've (so far) not had any sapping. I am also about wrapping anything & everything in boxes. It just makes it more mysterious & it's easier to wrap.

And Merry Christmas :)

Christmas at your house sounds like a blast. Can't wait to see what happens next year!!

And you write the name right on the package??? Why didn't I think of that. Oh. I know. I have thought of it but decided I didn't want to be thrown out of the family. My mother and sister would KILL ME. Seriously!!!

Barbaloot said...

Oh--I'm so sorry! Bugs and sap are not something I think of when I'm excited for a live tree. Good thing it's always very cold around Christmas time where I live. I wouldn't want to deal with that ever!

Eva Gallant said...

I have to confess--I have an artificial tree which comes with the lights already on it! I love my tree! It's real looking, easy to decorate, and does not include any live creepy, crawly critters!lol

Michele R said...

Great post! We too have a real tree. Our tradition is to schlep to the Home Depot and pick one out. I noticed this year that when I opened up the tree shirt it was all stuck together with sap.
And each day there is terror in the house as to whether there is still water in the stand. We've had our tree since Dec. 1 and I just put some wrapped presents under it.
BTW the scene in Christmas Vacation with the live squirrel in the tree and the chaos cracks me up every year.

You just reminded me why I'm so darn happy with my silver tinsel tree. I married a Jewish man and therefore, we have a Christmakah bush. It is lovely. Really, it is.

Merry Christmas!

This makes me that much happier that we have a fake tree! I didn't even think about critters.

what a pain with the sap and all. We have a real tree too. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.

gayle said...

Your life does sound exciting!! We stopped using bows and my husband(who does all the wrapping) stopped using tags and just wrote the names on the presents!

Sara said...

I was expecting at the end, "The title probably confused you, bless your hearts." LOL

Just FYI, my living room is a little darker than pear, I love red accents, and now I'm freaking out b/c my wrapping paper doesn't match my living room! ACKKKK! WTG, Debbie. Way to ruin Christmas. LOL ;) Oh, and I also Sharpie names onto packages. I consider it more environmentally friendly...or some junk like that.

Sarah and the Gentlemen said...

I hope the gifts themselves remained unharmed.

On a postive note, you can make all the *sappy* jokes that spring to mind and when you get blank stares just point to the tree and say, "Get it? Sappy?" They'll love it! (fingers crossed)

Merry Christmas!

I have never had a real Christmas tree. Ever. And after this post, I am soooo grateful! LOL I truely enjoy my fake tree that looks great every year, I only had to buy once, and there are no critters living in it!

Merry Christmas!

I love wrapping presents in deceiving packages! It's my favorite way to wrap! Sorrya bout the sap. :( Bummer girl!

Meadowlark said...

I thought everybody wrote names directly on the packages... go figure.

I would rather forgo the holiday entirely than have a fake tree. But that's just me.

And the live-away YoungSon is coming home for the LAST CHRISTMAS before he gets married. I am sad. :(

Enjoy your younguns and have a Merry Christmas.

Oh I am the Nazi gift wrapper of the family. Corners perfectly tucked, bows to accent the paper. Plus every label (yes, I use labels) comes from a different Christmas character... To: You From: Rudolph, or Santa or Mrs. Clause or Jesus.. yes I do.

We also always cut a live tree - it is family tradition. But I insist on checking for creatures before it comes into the house - birds and squirrels have to find other quarters.

Merry Christmas! Can't wait to check out your other blog. Thanks for all the great posts this year.

at least your laughing about it!! the bug thing would have killed me - no creepy crawlys for me!

Hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

I'm so sorry about that sap getting on your presents! (Although, I'd rather the sap than the bugs!!!)
I hope you have an "unexpected" Christmas!

This year all of my wrapping paper coordinates. A little anal, huh? The only exception are the gifts from "Santa" which are wrapped in some sort of paper with Santa on it. And they don't coordinate. It's killing me.

Pricilla said...

*snif* I have no tree for the third year in a row. I feel like I am in time out...

Next year though I will be in my house and there will be joy on the Happy Goats Farm. And pine for the goats to munch. hurrah!

Sap is a pain. Especially if it gets on the carpet....hopefully there weren't any black widows.

jen@odbt said...

We use a hodge podge of wrapping paper but the man in red's gifts are always in one kind of paper. No labels on Santa's gifts...just the # of dots in the corner indicating who the gift is for. One dot for 1st born, 2 dots for middle, etc.

Merry Christmas!

Deb said...

We've put the whole tree thing on hold until our kids can be trusted not to pull things off and/or eat them. I'm desperately trying to wrap gifts this year. It may not happen. Momz' gifts won't be here on time, Svens back is out... happy holidays.

DebraLSchubert said...

I don't celebrate Christmas, but I love the lights and decorations and stories like this one. Merry Christmas to you and your family, and I hope the presents survived the sap attack!

Sometimes I feel sinful for having the audacity to take my tree out of a huge BOX and ASSEMBLE it, branch by branch, twisting limbs this way and that, in order to achieve a REAL looking tree - when, of course, I could just go down to the tree stand on the corner, fork over $50, and enjoy the look and aroma of a real tree.
And then I read posts like yours.
Oh yes, I love my fake tree.
Merry Christmas!

Lani said...

I am hating our real tree this year and I really hope we can get a fake one next year.. it would be a lot better easier if, when the tree gets knocked over by kids, water didn't splash everywhere and 2 pounds of pine needles didn't need to be vacuumed up!

Oh Debbie, you've had about as much luck with your Christmas tree as we have. One of our dogs got the wire from the tree lights wrapped round his paw and he dragged the tree across the living room! We put the tree back together again, switched on the lights and they popped!

I hope you're having a lovely Christmas holiday and thank you for the message you left on my blog. :)

I totally wrap people's names directly on the gifts' wrapping with a sharpie... what's wrong with that?

You are a hoot. We had a real tree that drooled and offered unto us the miracle of life in the form of Critters That Make You Weep and Sneeze. Hence, the white vinyl aberration we call a tree. I so enjoyed this. Thanks.

Oh no! Sap AND bugs? You've seen it all. I will never forget the year that my absolutely perfect Chrismas tree wilted (died?) a week before Christmas and we had to get ANOTHER one (oh yes we did) and decorate it all over again. I can't decide if I hated that or liked it. I do have a thing for the tree decorating...

Sap and bugs.

Sounds...DELIGHTFUL?

We use an artificial tree because 1) I am allergic to real trees and 2) being Pagan, I just don't have the heart to kill a real tree

BUT...if we did use real trees, I think you would have just managed to scare me off. LOL
