As is usually the case when I read bizarre news stories, I am taken back to a memory in my own life.I've told you all about my extreme distaste for most school field trips. Several times I have had to accompany a group of elementary school children to Kroger on a field trip. Sure, there was always some scavenger hunt to see where the food comes from or some other pretense of education but I noticed not a single college my kids visited asked if they had ever been to a grocery store on a school field trip. Not one. I'm beginning to think these field trips do not impact scholarships.
Anyway, on one of these fact-filled missions, I was privileged to look over near the deli case in time to see one well-known elementary offender pick up lunch meat packages, lick them, and place them back into the deli case.
Oh yes he did.I'm raising four kids. Four kids who have all gotten into trouble and done some things that left me shaking my head in wonder and amazement, not to mention shame and embarrassment. However, I don't think you could pay any of my kids enough to get them to lick a meat package in a grocery store.
Am I missing something here? It seems to be a new craze. At least the kid on the field trip with me was licking a package of cooked meat. At the time I thought he was destined to be the dumbest person ever but now I see that some guy in Britain has claimed that title.
Pity. America used to be first in everything.

Licking raw meet is really bizarre.

*places item back on shelf*
How puerile.
Seriously, it is so very bizarre. Unless it is beef I guess, which is nice when red...
funny post! found you on Friday Follow. Can't wait to read more of your blog!
Very interesting. And weird. And psychotic. And worthy of being put in a straight jacket while shopping for groceries. Ugh.
I can't imagine any of my kids licking a package either. In fact the other day my 13-year old threw two Oreo cookies in the trash. I asked him why and he said they had fallen out of his hand and onto the kitchen floor (and the floor is NOT that bad). I had to tell him about the 5-second rule.
mo.stonesking is right -- this is very bizarre behaviour.
Very very bizarre. Wow. I'm glad we gave up the honor of that title.
Oh.my.goodness. I hadn't heard about that. And I certainly don't want to see it. But now you're going to have me pausing by the deli...
Great post, Debbie. Somehow you become more and more entertaining, as if that were possible. :)
Um. I don't even know what to say :D
Following from Friday Follow! Have a great weekend ☺

There's got to be something to it. But I'm not going to test it out ; -)
I don't even know what to say to this.
I am now following from Friday Follow! http://www.thriftyandfrugalliving.com
Maybe it's kobe beef? Naw, just kidding. That's just weird.
Hi, Thanks for your comment.
Your story was very strange. It goes to show you that the world is full of strange people and we are the more sane of the bunch.
Ha ha GROSS! Following from Friday Follow :)
Great Post! Found you on Follow Friday!

At least the kid on your field trip put them back. The last time I took a high school class on a field trip, a couple of them were shoplifting. That ended my field trip days.
Gag! Licking meat packages? But poking fingers through that super tight plastic wrap I totally understand!
following you from follow me friday, I'm with ya on the licking????
Yuck. I'm glad we lost this title.
Maybe he was trying to commit suicide in a very, very weird way...salmonella is not a sure thing, but hey. Weird is weird.
Everything you write is simply hilarious. I've seen a child lick the ice keeping the meat packages cold-- but licking the meat is a whole different story. An adult doing is totally youtube worthy...
I know it took intense research and savvy investigative skills to find this out. Good for you!! LOL!!
I mean...really??? Seriously????
Hugs
SueAnn
Licking raw meat? Yuck!
And I am not a fan of field trips either. Not exactly a relaxing way to spend the day.
OMG...Ewwwww. that is so nasty
This is so weird.
I've heard of licking windows, but meat...
Weird.
Just nusty! Your post made me think of some things othr weird ones.
I just loved your review not just a post.
xx
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! Stop it right this second! Is that a picture of your son? Totally adorable if it is : ). I am surprised Kaish hasn't done anything like that. What would be the appeal to that I wonder?
Now I feel like going to Wal-Mart and licking all the bologna packages. BOLOGNA ONLY!
Sounds like a rootin' tootin' good time.
Aww heck, once I am done with the bologna then I may head over to the cheese. BOLOGNA AND CHEESE go together like.....well....Bologna and Cheese!
Eww...that is bizarre...makes my tummy turn a bit!
following you from Follow Friday!!!
'As is usually the case when I read bizarre news stories, I am taken back to a memory in my own life.'
Oh no!!! why does that song 'you spin me round' by cold play resound in the background of my mind when i read this? you really made me laugh. personally i try not to think so hard....tomorrows a new day!
Guess that's why they stopped animals in the stores...mind you they'd probaby just eat the whole darn package.
Oh my goodness. That makes me feel all barfy thinking about it.
LOL...ewwwww, that is just gross! GROSS, I tell you! LOL But funny all the same.
Thanks for stopping by!! :O)
Ah, I think these are the kinds of kids that you can catch licking the snot that is dripping out of their nose!!
I wonder if this is like the pregnant lady anemia thing where it makes women want to eat dirt and crave ice non-stop. That is waaaaaaay too weird.
But do you bring it up to the kid's mom the next time you see her in the school yard?
"Oh that Jimmy, he's a real meat-licker isn't he?"
I fear it's a direct result of the lack of readily available chickensicles.
REALLY?!?!?
Come on!!!! Now I'm afraid to make that sandwich I wanted for lunch. Eww.
I know a girl here where I live that will eat a pinch of raw ground meat while she's cooking. She said she loves it. Ew!
What a chicken-licker! *giggle*
Followin' right back from Friday Follow! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I adore yours, already!

Those people eat steak and kidney pie and blood sausage. What's a little lick of frozen chicken packages?
Tame by British standards, that's what it is.
Ewww to the degree of infinity.
So totally yucktastic. I practically have to get paid to prepare meat.
Maybe if the package sticks to your tongue you get to take it home with you for free?
People's oddities never end...
I barely made it past the first sentence...YUCK! Do people have nothing better to do!
I enjoy your blog. I followed last week and didn't even realize you were part of Friday Follow...so happy Friday Follow!

Ew!! what the heck?? I mean maybe licking an Oreo box would be viewed as acceptable. Wtf?
You are funny and I love funny! Following from Follow Friday.
OH GOD!!!
I was planning to buy meat at Kroger this weekend. Now, I don't know if I can.
I should think you'd be happy to be rid of that "honor" in your family. ;-)

Kids have been known to do anything and the more bizarre the better. By they time they are old enough to be employed in a supermarket, they should have gotten all the stupid things behind them. Guess not huh.
My OCD is just clanging now and I may never eat again. sigh
Lol! Okay disgusting but so so funny. And well I guess there are just stupid people everywhere. :)
Ewwww. That is a sickening thought Happy Friday Follow - Rita @ http://one2try.blogspot.com/
lol disgusting will become a vegetarian from now on, cant believe this lol, my local tescos will be getting a miss hehe, excellent post, hope u are well xx happy Friday :)
I wish you had asked him why?! I'm just dying to know....no, I'm not, but still!!
That is freakin' crazy. So...I was thrilled to see your name above mine on Friday Follow. I've been a long time avid reader but had yet to follow you. I guess that I'm just not a detail kind of girl.
Well, I'm a follower now!
That's so gross - I don't like to be sick!
Shudder, my tummy hurts a little now.

I haven't witnessed a licking, but I did see a kid poke his finger right into the middle of a package of hamburger once. I gave him the Mean Eye and told him to stop messing with things.
Howdy! Thanks for linking up at Friday Follow. I am already following and stopping over to say hello. Happy Friday Follow!

Ewwww. I'm trying to picture what exactly would be going through a person's mind to make them want to pick up and lick a pack of uncooked meat in the store. Yeah....I've got nothing.
Great post. Do they lick the plastic on the packages or do they open them?
I am a friday follower!!!!

Thanks for stopping by today, Deb!
Can we all say together, "YOUNG & STUPID"!
that is just weird, LOL
Wow...weird!
Thanks for stopping by. We're following you back :)
Is it grosser than stupid or stupider than gross? Either way, I think I'll be washing the outside of all my meat packages from here on out.
I am stopping by from Friday Follow. I am now your newest follower. Have a great weekend PS LOVE your blog and I will be back to visit again soon!
Ewwwwww! Licking frozen food packages is gross. Now I don't mind not being young anymore :-)
xo
Did his tongue stick to the package? That would have been You Tube worthy.
Hmmm, it's kinda scary to admit, but I could totally picture my son licking a package of chicken. Hmm I might have a problem...
Very funny post!
Found you from SITS!
Happy friday!
Wow, all I can say is YUCK!
yum licking meat...sounds wonderful
Was this licking the PACKAGING and not the actual meat? Because at least that would be more sanitary for other is it were the package...
One Sunday morning, my 3 year old was waiting for the moment during communion when he could eat his bread. He had a really hard time waiting though so while he waiting for the cue, he licked and licked that little chunk of bread. Yep. I'm not sure it was technically "waiting".
I totally just gagged. Who knows how many disgusting hands and who knows what else have touched that packaging!
I'm welling up with tears!
I'm so happy to see Britain the *first* at something again!
It makes me... so... proud.
Perhaps "licking of frozen goods in supermarkets" could be made an Olympic sport? That way Britain would stand a chance of winning some more medals.
Oh and "Championship Tea Drinking" should be in the Olympics too. Though then, I suspect the Chinese would give us a run for our money.
OK. I'm sure I'm about to embarrass myself here. When I was 1 1/2, this is according to my mother, I don't actually remember, I picked up a package of Hillshire Farm sausage and took a bite out of it. She says I was teething.
Well alright then, yup I'm so not sure what to say here.
Next time when I go on one of those dreaded grocery field trips (Cole's school does at least one or two a year!) I'm so going to pay attention when we go by the meats. Camera ready to reclaim the pride! LOL :)
That is disgusting and stupid!!
WHAT ??? Why on earth would anyone want to LICK that.. maybe the cakes in the bakery but seriously... the meat package. CRAZY !!!!
Staci
What?? licking things? Dirty things?? omg, this made me a little dizzy to think about. It just isn't logical - how is it funny? What is wrong with people these days??
Nice! Great post!
EW! How Gross. From Friday Follow. Hello and have a great Friday.
meet lickers? This I have never heard of....LOL.
um. gross. I'm going to file this under "you can't make this stuff up."
I don't know if I'm bothered more about the fact that "meat-licking" is gaining popularity or that you're taking kids to Kroger on food-finding missions. Um...why? Because every time I go to Kroger and I see a mom with her kids in Kroger, she just looks MISERABLE. I can only imagine VOLUNTEERING for that task. You're my hero.
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Friday Following you.
I can't imagine licking a package of anything. All the contamination on there, not to mention whose hands have been on there and where their hands have been. YUCK!
What newspaper do you read? How do I miss all these fantastic news items?
I wrote a post about school field trips a while back... I am SO with you. I think it stems back to the time I got in a two-hour traffic jam with a van full of squirrelly fourth graders en route to our destination. Have. Mercy.
GOOD LAWD! eyewwww....
I saw on twitter where some guy peed on steaks - in the walmart grocery -- EYEWWWW
people are so weird. some are even too weird to write about *laugh*
ROFL!! I can't believe that someone would do that! Especially uncooked meat....I would just feel like the E.Coli was coming...gross!!!
I don't really get the whole licking thing, but licking raw meat packages really does take it to a whole new level.
I've worked in grocery stores, and have seen some crazy stuff. There was this hoarder lady who bought an entire cart of mayonnaise each week. And no, she didn't work in food service.
How crazy and another good reason to carry hand sanitizer in my purse!
That's just disgusting. Kids are so strange.
Well, at least he didn't try to lick a frozen pipe. Seriously!
The Saturday Sphinx
HA!! So strange. I'm o.k. with not being first this time (-:
I don't even like touching meat (sexual innuendo unintended ;-)
That is just crazy.
And a little gross.
This is gross, but maybe they are deficient in some mineral, or some brains....
Licking raw meat is one thing... at my old local supermarket all the yoghurt had to be taken off the shelves after a junkie (who was exacting revenge after being caught shoplifting) was caught on camera injecting the containers with heroin. Kids today, hey? Well, not exactly - it was the mid nineties.
Germs! Dead, meaty germs mixed in with hand (and tongue) germs that have been God-knows-where (well, on the meaty package, for one thing). If this doesn't turn the lickers into zombies I don't know what will...
Um. Wow? Excuse me while I go puke.
I recently saw someone take a taste from the ladle in the prepared soup at the crocery store...and yes, he put the ladle right back in the soup. NO SOUP FOR ME!
I have no idea why anyone would lick anything at the grocery store...ick!
Here from Friday Follow and already following you :)
Wow! That's just nasty :)
Visiting from the Trendy Treehouse Follow Me Fridays! I'm a new follower...love for you to come visit me!
Have a great weekend,

Oh....eeeeeewwww!!
Cooked or raw..that's just disgusting.
Just reminds me that parents should never say "my child would never do that."
As is usually the case when I read bizarre news stories, I am taken back to a memory in my own life.
:), Debbie, day after day you make me laugh and I appreciate you for it!
My grandson is 3 and going through a licking phase and I can't even see him doing that!!
... and there's another reason for me not to return to the UK... !!
Seriously? I have never heard of such a thing!
Thank goodness we Brits are good at something!
Although my first reaction is yeugh! And why?
Eeeeewwwww!
ok spill it. Where can I get a pink chicken?
Yeah, that licking thing is bizarre. However, Miss America just came up next to me and saw your pic of the dog licking his nose. She laughed at it and I said, "Isn't that funny? Wish I could do that." She made a face and said, "Why would you want to do that?" There's hope for kids. Just not sure about the adults...
Eeewwww, that's just nasty. I have a feeling that guy probably has some other weird fetishes like smelling people's shoes and wearing women's underwear. You just can never tell about a person by looking at them.
Well, I don't quite know what to say about that.
Maybe their mothers didn't nurse them long enough --or at all
or maybe it was because they were nursed as babies by their mothers.
hard to figure out.
this is absolutely true: licking raw meet it really bizarre.
really.
and truly.
and how DO you get 116 comments (or 117 since I am now commenting).
cheers.
Stopping by from Fri Follows - I'm a new follower. Love to have you stop by and appreciate your follow: http://dimes2vines.com
That is so gross! I saw a kid once lick the ladle of dressing at a salad bar once. I am very cautious with those now...
Taking school children to the grocery as a field trip is almost as weird as the licking thing.
That is just insane. I cannot see my kids doing that either. Then again, they love hand sanitizer so I don't even think you could pay them to do something so gross like that!
congratulations : I have given YOU the SUNSHINE AWARD :) please come to my blog to collect it :)
Hmm...well, if it came down to licking a meat package from the deli or picking their nose and eating what they dug out...I'd have to go with the meat.
It has less of a *gross out* factor. :)
