Playing Games

I'm a game player.

No, not the emotional blackmail type of game player. Although I have been known to partake in that past time but I'm not proud of that.

I'm a player of games. All games. Any games. Cards, board games, video games, games of chance, games of strategy. You name it and I'll play it.I can remember playing cards with my Dad when I was a very small child and my mother begging him to let me win. Why she did this within earshot of me, I'm not sure. But, I vividly recall him telling her that I would win when I "deserved to win". I don't remember being upset or frustrated. I remember thinking, "Well, then I better learn how to win".

And I did. My Dad is still one of the best opponents you could have in a game. We've always kidded him about his crazy luck. Play a game with him and you will be baffled by the moves he makes. They won't seem to make any sense at all. He'll still win.

I am an only child and my parents were wonderful to try to meet my game-playing needs. Most Sunday afternoons found us around our table playing one game after another. Even Monopoly. The real way. None of that wimpy shortened version stuff. My husband and I played games together when we were dating and then before we had kids. Some games he stopped playing with me because I think I won too much. Scrabble was one of those. But, he would always be up for a game of cards or something. Then we had the kids. Joy of joy. Built in game players. And just like my dad, I had a very hard time letting them win. Some card games I would make myself wait three rounds after getting a winning hand before going out. Just to even it up a smidge.

My kids all have different game playing personalities. My daughter does not enjoy games. I realize that some people don't enjoy games. I just can't imagine not loving them though. She is like me in so many ways but in that way, we greatly differ. My middle son will play the occasional game with me but those quickly fade away when he doesn't win.My youngest son and oldest son are the ones who play with me the most. Playstation? I'm all about it. Put that controller in my hand and I am a happy woman. Rock Band. I am killer on drums and not too horrible on guitar. Wii? We just got that for Christmas but I love it.

We have a coat closet, like most of Americans. Right after we moved in, I took that hanging bar out and installed shelves. For games. It is our game closet and is full top to bottom. Actually, everything we own doesn't even fit in there.

Someone asked me recently about my love for playing games. I told them I could play morning to night and never tire of them. It is true. What are my favorites? Settlers of Catan, Backgammon, Quiddler, Canasta, Mah Jongg. It is hard to choose. As with my books, I'm afraid my games are in that closet sad that I'm not listing them.

I'd love to hear what your family enjoys. I'm always up for expanding into another closet.

Great post.. I can remember loving Mah Jong as a child!

We play PS3 and Wii and Nintendo DS and Kaluha (I think it's called that - it consists of moving marbles from hole to hole)is fun too!

I love games too, sadly my hubs doesn't... I love Cranium, and Scrabble.

Cribbage was the game of choice, one on one against my Dad. I always, always, always lost until that fateful game when I just clued in to the fact that his certainty about winning was all about intimidation. He actually called me some nasty names as I whooped his butt. I remember just laughing because it felt so good to be winning. The play was different after that. I think I had gained his respect and he saw me as an equal before the board and pegs.
Ah, families and their games !
(We all love Beatles Rockband right now as we are a huge Beatles Family. I rock the vocals !)

Oh, what a fun game!! I've been playing Mah Jongg for the last three years and love it. Growing up, we played a lot of Monopoly, Rummy, and Canasta. Now, we enjoy the Settlers of Catan, but we play the German version... So much fun!! In fact, I think I'll have to plan a game night soon! Hugs, Silke

We were a game playing family growing up, cards, Stock Ticker, Stratego, Scrabble. My husband and I play Scrabble or cards on occasion, and he tries to get the kids to play Monopoly with him so he can settle in for a long slow relentless victory.
I've never heard of some of those you mentioned.
I guess we're not much of a game family...

I too love playing games. My brother and I played all the time. My son loved to play too though he would get pretty upset if he didn't win some of the time. I tried to be good about that. My husband, on the other hand, loves to win too much. He is pretty aggressive. No fun!
I like to play the game we call, "Screw your neighbor". A lot of fun.

Ooh! Settlers is so addicting, isn't it? We have a linen closet FULL of games--top to bottom. And the top of our coat closet is completely full of games as well. LOL! So I hear you, fortunately I married a man who loves games as much as me.

(But don't put a joystick in my hand, I'm bad... really bad...)

Our Wii is fun too!

Fun post!

Yep, I grew up playing games too. We had family night weekly and it always involved games: sorry, monopoly, trouble, bean bag games...

And some of my favorite memories of college were our all night card games with the guys down the hall.

Now I still play games, our linen closet is full of board games, the kids get them every Christmas and I'm known to show up with a new one spontaneously. I just recently introduced my kids to Mousetrap! Man, that is a complicated one! Of course, they get quite a kick out of my attempts at Super Mario Bros. But I am a Wii bowling champ!

I love to play games too, but my husband and son don't have that gene. I think my husband's like yours - he's given up because I win too much. When I go to my parents', we always play cribbage and dominoes. I think it's as much about the fellowship and being tuned into each other as it is about the game.

Do you really know how to play Mah Jong??! Lo Gung has tried to teach me twice - I canNOT keep up. the game is FAST with their family, and SERIOUS. Grandma used to sit down after dinner, every night, to try and win $$ from her kids/friends/relatives. Good times...

If you ask me to play a game...I love Skipbo, Uno, Cranium....stuff like that. *grin*

Oh freaky...we have the SAME coat-turned-game closet. When my husband returned from Iraq (not married yet), he had a LOT of discretionary income. So, he got on Amazon and ordered...er...a LOT of games. But we do play them (except for Sex and the City Trivial Persuit because honestly, that crap is HARD). But I would have to say that our new favorites are Attack Uno and Apples to Apples (not really all that strategic, but very fun with a group). And of course, I could play Rummy all day (and have). We have a Wii and all the requisite games that go with it, but honestly, I would prefer to sit down at a table with a board game any old day!

A fun two player game for you and your husband or older kids is Balloon Cup.

We are addicted to Bananagrams right now at our house. (It's sort of like free-style Scrabble, with a time/speed element.) LOVE it! So do my kids, my parents, in-laws, sisters...

In the past, we've gone through Rook and Skip-Bo phases too.

I'm so not into card games and Monopoly perplexes me once people start making deals on property. Can't they just play without all the small stuff added in. I can remember my mom playing board games with up and I'm right there playing all the Mario games and all on the Wii with the kids. Play your heart out.

I love to play card games. I'm not so much of a board game lover. All things cards I find enjoyable.

My daughter always wants to play Apples to apples, but I don't really love that one so much. I actually love Balderdash, which is a board game. Lots of laughs with that one.

Check it out (and I'm not kidding about one of the pieces looking like a butt plug - http://foxyden.blogspot.com/2009/12/see-for-yourself.html.)

We also love Liars Dice, Cranium, Sequence, Connect 4, Phase 10.

But my all time fave is RockBand. I also rock hardcore on the drums. :)

I love playing games, and I love learning new games. We learnt a new board game at the weekend called Tuvalu, which was a fun (fairly light) one. One we play regularly at home, at the moment, is Race for the Galaxy. We play a lot of German-style games, as you can probably tell from that -- but we also play a lot of cards, and 'traditional' family games like Scrabble. We also just got a Wii. Yay for games! :D

I love games too!! Now that the boyfriend has figured out how to beat me in Scrabble, I had to get him some new games for V-day. I settled for monopoly championship edition (it comes with a TROPHY, come on!) and SET (I love this card game) :) SET is awesome cause it's cheap, easy to learn, and can get progressively harder

Oh man, I am a total gamer too! But in my house it was my mother who led the game brigade. That woman was a card shark. I swear, she should have become a pro poker player. I too am an only child, but Mama taught all my little girlfriends to play spades and hearts and canasta. Every slumber party would turn into a throwdown card party with my mother. All my friends loved try to beat her, but few did. I remember having long games of gin with her that would last for over a week. Fun!

I've never liked table games. Oh, once in a while I don't mind Scrabble but that's about the only one. If I ever get 'conned' into playing a game, I couldn't care less who the winner is. I don't care if I win...and I don't care if I lose.

I need serious counseling, don't I.

I used to love to play games. When I got married I thought that we would get together with different couples and play games. It was going to be so much fun! When I was reading a magazine one evening I read that there was a Newelywed board game. I just HAD to HAVE it! So my new hubby and I went on a search right then for that game. We found it, but we never played it because I never found a couple who liked to play games. Bummer.

I'm an only child, too, but my parents pretty much left me to figure out how to entertain myself. My parents were big on card games, though. They used to play poker with the neighbors every Friday and Saturday night. My grandparents and aunts and uncles were big game players and most family get togethers wound up in marathon rounds of Trivial Pursuit or UNO. My husband and kids aren't much for board or card games, though the hubs will play cards with our friends now and then. The times we've played games as a family can probably be counted on one hand.

Kathi D said...

Oh! Oh! Oh! Me too! My favorite thing to do as a child was to get a bunch of people talked into playing Monopoly, the more the better. And my dad taught us how to play cards, and also didn't believe in letting the kids win. He was a master card player, and always seemed to know what was in everybody's hand. He had a head for numbers.

We like to play Scrabble (even though I usually win) and Cribbage, and if we have enough people, Hearts and Bridge. I still play Monopoly, but on the iPod Touch, because it has never been a favorite of Rick's.
During his law school days we loved to get up a big game of Risk with friends. That is really lethal!

It is great that you carried your love of games into your adult life. Games are so good for the mind and they are a wonderful way to be social. I love any kind of trivia game. I burnt out on Monopoly as a kid and I don't care if I never play again. Scrabble is always fun.

I've never been big into board games, much to my kid's chagrin. But these days, to get everyone to take part in family time, I'll play whatever they want. I too am an only child. Grew up with my Grandparents and Grandpa taught me how to play checkers before I started elementary school Don't remember the rules now though 60 years later! LOL He and my Grandma also used to play Chinese Checkers with me -especially on cold winter nights. When I was about 9 or 10, I wanted a Monopoly game and got it for Christmas that year but never had many friends around who enjoyed playing board games all that much. As a result, I used to play Monopoly by myself! Mom and I often played 500 Rummy and in the summertime, some of the neighborhood kids and I would toss a blanket on the ground and play Rummy then. Such a fun game especially with all the wise cracks that tend to accompany the playing. My ex-husband and I used to play either Rummy or Gin Rummy and we kept a tally sheet of who won and by how many points -at a penny a point. Not that any money ever changed hands but when he left, I owed him a couple thousand bucks -so he said -and I said "Only because you cheated." And that was the truth on more levels than just the game playing! Good fun -be it board games or cards -or whatever!

I adore games as well. Card games. Board games. I remember as a child of about seven spending an entire summer with a neighbour of nine playing Monopoly. We had absolutely nothing in common except that we were addicted, for just one summer, to that game. That summer I learned how to see numbers in patterns, and how to add up with lightning speed. Currently shocked that my five-year-old son has apoplexy every time he loses even a SINGLE hand at Uno. Ah well.

Sadly, we don't often play games in our home. Hubby's the god of the t.v. remote control and hardly budges off the settee in the evenings. I can't blame him though as he gets up really early in the mornings to go to work and is tired when he gets back home. Playing games as a family is good though..... I might encourage hubby to participate sometimes and persuade him it's better fun than channel hopping. :O)

I grew up in a house hold of weekly family game nights and weekly mario cart marathons (two seperate events, all my mum use to kick out asses at). They still go on as far as I'm aware. All my grown up siblings and mother meet weekly to do this. If I wasn't in a different country I would so be in on that.

I started playing with my Husband but don't anymore because he cheats so badly it's a joke. He hates to loose. :)

I can't wait until my Son is old enough!

We MUST be soul mates!!! I absolutely LOVE games (of the mental and board varieties)! My favorite has to be the electronic monopoly my hubs and I just bought...or scrabble - as long as I can use a dictionary!

I like card games best...especially Rook. But a hand of Hearts or Spades is always fun too. :)

Settlers of Catan and Quiddler are favorites of mine, too! I have every intention of bringing Settlers to the hospital with me during labor (I seem to take more then 24 hours to get the deed done) and I get bored easily. Last time, I made my sister bring Trivial Pursuit cards and I was the only one allowed to answer the questions.

Quiddler, Scrabble, Boggle, Hand & Foot (we hear it's similar to Canasta) and Perquacky.

Except for the lone card game, I'm mostly a word person :-)
