Sometimes a Rat is Just a Rat

Yesterday I received a picture text from my college daughter and my husband received one from our college son.

His was a very nice photo of the greenhouse on my son's college campus where he works. It was full of gorgeous flowers of every possible hue and was just a delight to see on a dark, cold, winter day.Mine was a photo of some lab rats in a biology lab. Now, here's the thing. Wouldn't you think the mom would get the flowers photo and the dad get the lab rats? Not in our family.

I don't know what it means. There must be some deep psychological reason and explanation as to why when my kids see vermin, they think of me. And why beautiful flowers remind them of their dad.Somehow, I get some deep satisfaction from being the kind of mom that receives photos of lab rats. I guess that satisfaction explains it all.

Shivvver.....Rats and snakes eating rats give me the heebie jeebies. Yeah. I'd want the flowers.

Oh that is too funny! I would want to see the flowers LOL.

I think it is very cool that your daughter (who maybe shares your interest in rats?) sent you that photo. My daughter, who is still at home, sends me (via IM of course) photo after photo of clothing!

deb said...

Seriously?
Rats?
And my kids would totally do something like that.

TechnoBabe said...

There ya go, you like being that kind of mom and your kids know you pretty well don't they? Count your blessings that your college kids contact you regularly and even send photos of what they are doing at college. Lots of parents think their kids are kidnapped when they go to college.

jen@odbt said...

Those rats are creepy but whatever floats your boat ;) Seriously...love that your kids are in constant contact with you. I hope my kids will call/text/email me from college.

alessandra said...

I'm curious, why do you like to receive rat's photo?

Kristen said...

Pictures of rats don't bother me. Real rats would be an issue. Glad I'm not wherever she is. ;-)

Too funny.

That is interesting. My daughter would probably be the same way.

I personally would have preferred the flowers. But, I do find rodents to be pretty disgusting. At least your kids are writing you!

mama-face said...

Obviously you're the one with the sense of humor. Right?

Erin, Nick and Merrick said...

I am the mom that will get lab rats too.

HT said...

LOL! I think we all should be thankful that we get ANY pictures from our kids when they are in college. Even if it's lab rats! At least she's working or studying, right?!

Melissa said...

I would want to see the flowers... but that is still amusing. Have fun with the rats!

Eva Gallant said...

They're thinking of you right? That's what counts!

Pictures speak a thousand words and debby these were adorable, the fresh flowers in the greenhouse were my fav a reminder of warmth to come xx

Erin said...

I think that it is so sweet that your kids send you picture messages so that you can be a part of their "away" lives. I hope my kids grow up to do this too!

Becca said...

Don't you think that it's the unexpected weirdness in life that cements our characters? We are who we are because usually we do just what you think we'll do, and then there are those... deviations that make us real.

Trish said...

Thats funny! At least they think of you!...Rats and all!

Under the Influence said...

Maybe your hubs can forward the pictures of the flowers? Then you will have BOTH!

thatgirlblogs said...

you're a good mom. I had to scroll past the rats as quickly as possible, LOL.

gypsy said...

at least you know where you stand.

mrscoopermedia said...

I would love to be where your son's picture is. If I could have a green house, I'd be in it all day. Now a rat lab is a different story. You don't ever have to worry about seeing me there LOL.

Creepy!

slommler said...

Now that is funny!! Rats huh? Me...well I will take the flowers. LOL!!
But at least she is sharing her day with you and that is cool!!

Lol! That is awesome. But hey at least your kids seem to know you and take the time to send a picture :)

Mandy's Life After 30 said...

Well she should've at least followed up that photo with a picture of cheese.

Aren't rats adaptable in any situation and don't they make the most of their lives? Yep, that sounds like you. :-)

Dedene said...

Maybe because your daughter is more into science and your son loves flowers?

Missy said...

LOL! I would be worried!

shortmama said...

Yucky! I probably would have screamed to get rat pictures!

Evil Twin's Wife said...

I think that's sweet. At least they were both thinking of their parents! :-)

This made me chuckle! Thanks for the laugh.

yonca said...

That is so funny. And I'm sure my son would want to see rats and he would say 'cool':)

Krëg said...

Aww. Those rats are cute! Can we name them? Because I vote for the names Patches, Test Subject One, Test Subject Two, Mr. Twitchers, and Control Group. The one with the pink eyes and white fur is obviously either a Test Subject Two or a Missus Scampers.

foxy said...

Yes, your satisfaction DOES explain it all. Super funny!

Laura said...

Yea....I'm the aunt that the kids like to show bugs and toad to.
I guess I'm edgy that way?

Rachael said...

That's funny!

I was a biochemistry major and worked in the rat lab for 2 years in undergrad. Never thought to send my mom a photo, though. Of course I didn't have a cell phone back then, so maybe that's why. =)

Counselormama said...

That is funny and I think it just means they think you are a cool mom!

Tiffany said...

I think it's pretty cool!

Helene said...

Eeeew, and the rats even have red eyes which just makes them that much creepier!

Then again, it was at least some type of contact, even it was a picture of lab rats. Next time ask her to send you a picture of a parking lot or something...something that won't bring you nightmares.

Alicia said...

hahhaa! awesome!! its nice to see that your kids are so well rounded!! and the rats are FREAKY with their beady little eyes...ew.

Secretia said...

The flowers are nice, but butterflies would have been nicer than the white rats :)

Sarah and the Gentlemen said...

I like both of those pictures! Can you maybe ask them to put some flowers in with the rats or the rats in with the flowers for the next picture? Thanks. ;)

Well, I think it's wonderful that your family does not abide by stereotypes.

Katherine Aucoin said...

I have to hand it to you, you see the glass as half full that's for sure. I would have quickly deleted the picture and given that child the silent treatment for a least a couple of hours.

Maureen@IslandRoar said...

I think I know what you mean. Nice that your kids save the raw gritty truth for you. Trust you with it. At least, that's what I'd be telling myself...

Mark said...

Very interesting ... the key is that you understand and appreciate why you got the lab rats.

mandatorybloghere said...

lol i wouldnt now what to think of that either funny

Jenni Jiggety said...

Moms who get lab rat photos have wicked smart science-y kids!

The Blonde Duck said...

I prefer duckies to rats.

Betty said...

hahaha, yes it explains alot ! :)

Allyson said...

The little beady red eyes are less Freudian and more...Hitchcockian. But flowers are easy to find...rats? Not so much. Perhaps father is easy to please and you are harder. Sort of like...I don't tell my mom the daily stuff...I tell her when I shoveled the driveway all by myself or made a scarf out of treebark. Dad? Dad gets the daily stuff. But at least your kids are thinking of you when they're at college...and not just when they want stuff. BONUS!

Vodka Logic said...

I agree, cool mum. My kids would sent us each both. :)

Brenda Susan said...

Ha! See? they know you very well!

Kathleen @ ForgingAhead said...

You are a most interesting person. That's what that means.

Michelle said...

I am not a big fan of rats or mice so that rat picture would've freaked me out if it showed up on my cell phone.

Lani said...

Only a COOL mom could appreciate a picture of lab rats:)

Karin Katherine said...

U R just the coolest mom around and both of your kids know it! Hooray for you!

L.T. Elliot said...

I like rats. They're smart and kind of cute.

lisleman said...

Rats look better on a blog than flowers.

Brenda said...

I got a picture of a wrecked bicycle yesterday. Followed by a phone call from a safe son. They just send us pictures of things that are important to them :)

Brenda said...

Forgot to say, the images made me think of Flowers for Algernon. . . .

Jill said...

How funny!
I think those lil rats are darling...in the picture of course!!!

JamericanSpice said...

This is funny! Now I wonder what my kids will send me.

But at least you get to share with the hubs. Would he rather the rats?

The rat is awesome! or something like that - Charlotte's Web :)

Gorgeous greenhouse! Imagine the smell.

Ms Bibi said...

I can so see my son sending me photo of rats not knowing that I wanna see flowers, lol

ladyfi said...

I think you get the rat photos because, after all, they are pretty intelligent creatures!

My name is PJ. said...

I'm not much for rodents. They turn big, bad me into a shrieking 10 year old girl.

Mrsblogalot said...

Remember when we were just happy when they called?

Why add rats?

Jeanie said...

The kids sharing pics of their day makes it all just cool.

sheila said...

LOL, at least YOU get pictures. I have to check FB. lol

Aunt LoLo said...

See, you've got your answer - you LIKE vermin, so they send you what you like. ;-)

carma said...

yes, you should be flattered. I know I'd be :D

Stephanie Faris said...

Maybe they're trying to hint to your dad to get you some flowers...and the rats are to throw you off the scent?

Marilyn (A Lot of Loves) said...

I think it's best not to analyze it too much :D

Laura said...

Personally by the time they are away at college who cares if it is a photo of rats, it is communication from them that they initiated!

Just ME the MOM said...

Yea . . . I would have received the rat photo also. My kids know me, they send me photos of every unsual creature they happen to run across. But then what can I say . . . I talk to the neighbors dogs . . .

Sometimes you just have to share what's in front of you, and who better than your Mom? You did good, this is clear.

When Ella Numera Una took college bio, she refused to touch the rats. She didn't mind coming in on the weekends to chart their progress, but looking-not touching-was where she drew the line. Smart kid!

Smart Mouth Broad said...

As long as they're not sending pictures of bugs. I can't take bugs.

Kathi D said...

Yes, I believe it DOES explain it all.

I happen to think rats are cuddly critters.

I once got a photo of a very large pile of poop sent to my phone.

I thought it was awesome.

I work with animals...I am sort of used to seeing poop a lot...and the pic I got was just amazing because it was a HUGE pile out of a small dog.

I'm probably weirding you out right now.
