Food, Food, Glorious Food

You know how bloggers are always saying they will need to stop blogging because they can't think of anything else to write about? Well, I mostly write about the oddities in my life. Which, praise be, apparently I am the oddest person ever so the material just never stops.I was reading a post on another blog where people were discussing what time they started thinking about lunch. The common answer was 11:00 or 11:30.

Not me baby. It is even a source of teasing between my mother-in-law and me.

I start thinking about my meals at least a full 24 hours in advance. It's true. I am more than a little obsessed with my food. I've been making meal plans for about 18 years now. Much longer than it has been in style. I take great comfort in knowing what I will be eating this upcoming weekend.
If my kids are coming home from college, I get even more obsessed. Maybe if I serve them just the perfect food, they'll still love home more than college. Or something like that. But in all honesty, I'd be almost as obsessed if it was just my husband and me. We like our food. A lot. We are completely the same in this aspect. When we go to a restaurant, we have to decide together what to order. And the person that orders second almost always orders the same thing the first person ordered. We are terrified one of us will get something better than the other.I think I may have inadvertently stumbled onto something here. In our teens and twenties, our hormones have most of us focused on other activities than eating. In our thirties, most of us are parents and just focused on when in the world we might sleep for longer than 15 minutes at a stretch. Nothing is more desirable than that blissful sleep.
Then come the 40s and 50s. The kids are older and sleeping. The hormones have settled or completely left us. And what is left to focus our attention on? Food. Wonderful food.Which would explain the proliferation of the cooking shows on the air.And that midlife bulge.

Hilarious - and true! Except that I'm a hopeless cook and burn everything and although now 50, have small kids so am still in that trying to sleep phase...

Lucy said...

Must be true. I've had more interest in cooking since the kids have flown and the divorce was final.

bermudaonion said...

I wish I could plan ahead like that. For me, figuring out what to cook is the worst part of cooking.

Jana said...

I am hopeless at cooking but you sound exactly like my Mom...she too plans our meals ahead and serves us the tastiest food

As I'm living away from home at jhe moment I miss my mom's meals like crazy...

Totally relate and resemble.

Unless hubs is out of town and then I don't cook -- I just eat stuff I wouldn't normally have.

And what's up with all the people who don't know how to cook now? Notice that?

Scary!

Food is my life! I have 3 freezers and 2 refrigerators. I think about food 24/7. Where to buy it. How to cook it. Who to invite to eat it. I teach cooking. I cater, I do private chef services. I DIET so I can eat anything I want. sigh... I need a hobby. ;-)

I love food!

deb said...

We're foodies in this house, although I don't plan meals generally. But there are always many groceries to satisfy anyone's urge to cook or bake.
Last night my 12 year old made a surprise dinner for her older sisters and friends.
Homemade breaded chicken strips, brie with toasted italian break, homemade cole slaw with celery seed etc

Now I'm hungry.

rachel... said...

I wish I was more interested! I start thinking about what to make for dinner about 5 minutes before dinnertime! Care to mentor me?

I'm not quite that organized. But I do try to think about what things I'll make for dinner on Sundays....I usually don't write it down. I just mostly have it in my head.

Oh....FOOD glorious FOOD!! We love our food around here, as I'm sure you know!

We differ in two respects, though - I don't plan out my meals. We go grocery shopping together, and get whatever looks fresh/in-season/cheap. Then I figure out how to cook it.

Second, we NEVER order the same thing at restaurants. We order different things, that we both like...and then we share dishes! Mm.....more options that way. ;-)

I love food too! But I'm only in the 20s stage of my life...aka pre-kids. Please tell me my love of food isn't going to go away!! :)

I did get props for making cupcakes NOT from the box yesterday though (even though they weren't as majestic as I wanted them to be!)

Michelle said...

This cracked me up AND it totally explains why my Meme starts worrying about visits from my out of town aunts and uncle 3 weeks in advance. Add in the fact that a couple are vegetarian and you can see why it becomes a full blown obsession.

What's next said...

Oh my gosh you just descibed me! I have to know what everyone else is getting before I can order. I plan meals and if company is coming I really have a reason to plan...

Beth said...

I am in serious love with my food too, but just can't get a handle on menu planning. It seems I start off with good intentions and then at the last minute change my mind, lol.

Stopping by from SITS! Thanks for your comment on my blog! Zumba is on dvd right now from what I understand if you so desired. :) I'm still in that early 20's stage and early kids' stage of focusing on sleep. :) I think I may welcome a food "obsession" :)

foxy said...

Man, I am the same way about food. I'm always thinking about what's next. And my husband is the exact OPPOSITE, which makes my obsession really difficult. If I start talking about dinner while we're eating breakfast, he just laughs and mocks me. What an a-hole, huh?

Bossy Betty said...

I just plan to eat all day long--that way I don't have to stop and plan in advance.

hahaha! See now I so afraid to plan for exactly the same reason - I'm obsessed with food :)

Allyson said...

1. You sort of remind me of Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally" but hey, you know what you like and that is a huge hurdle that some people never overcome.

2. Hubs and I ALWAYS end up ordering the same thing so now I check with him before the waitress comes back because what good is it going out with someone who lets you order off their plate when it's the same thing that's on your plate??

3. Yes, I clicked on the picture to enlarge it and if that's really your menu, I am wickedimpressed. If my menu looked like that, I would dream about food all the time, too. As it is, I make sure I have a protein, a carb, and a vegetable...although they are much fancier than my college days, they ain't got NUTTIN' on that! I am making notes....

TechnoBabe said...

I am like that too, but my hubby isn't thinking of food ahead of time. I like planning and preparing. I know the day before what we are having for the next day's meals. He just says "what's for lunch?" and I have it already started. True love wouldn't you say?

Eva Gallant said...

I am totally with you on this. I'd write more, but it's 11:15 and time for lunch!

Jeanie said...

Meal planning is not one of my strengths, but since I don't cook much these days that is not a big problem. I keep thinking the urge to cook will kick back in but it hasn't happened yet. I always like to know what other people are going to order at a restaurant....hate it if theirs looks better than mine.

Well, I also totally love food and plan everything around it! I started meal planning this year because I got tired of stopping by the grocery store every day. I used to start planning my dinner first thing in the morning, but now, I plan it for the entire week. Sometimes I get a new idea in my head that I must try, so my meals do change from time to time, but not often! I can't imagine how I will be when I'm in my 50s and my kids are grown!
