Warning: Daytime Television Can Be Hazardous

It was snowing yesterday morning so I turned on the television to check the weather forecast. I really don't watch much television during the day. I've always thought it was hazardous. I barely get anything accomplished as it is and if I had that tube on, well, let's just say clean socks would become a luxury around here. The Today Show was on and there from my television came the theme song to The Partridge Family. I was 8 - 12 years old during The Partridge Family reign - the perfect age to think they were the grooviest family around and wonder why my mom and dad weren't cool enough to drive a psychedelic bus or why I wasn't born with a God-given talent for singing or even standing in the back pretending to shake a tambourine.I was intrigued. A reunion of The Partridge Family. I quickly forgot about the snow and settled in to be entertained.

Holy wrinkle cream. I have decided there should be an immediate moratorium on reunions of any show that was around when I was young. Those poor Partridge Family people have aged. Even David Cassidy. Aging heartthrobs are not a pretty sight. But more than that, if they have aged, what does that mean for me? Inside, I'm still that young girl who just knew that if by chance I ever ran into Keith, he would immediately fall for me and I would be traveling around the world on that bus, with immediate musical skills as well. I'm thinking if he has aged like that...

Well, I just can't go there. And I'm sure not watching anymore of these reunion shows. See, daytime TV is hazardous. I knew it all along.

David Cassidy was a heart throb for many of us. And about aging...someone was on tv that we hadn't seen for years (can't remember who as I'm getting too old) and hubby and I both said at the same time 'boy, is he old'. Then I looked at hubby and said...'what does that say about us?'. Silence is golden.
Thanks for stopping by to say hi...

Glad I missed that show.
I saw David Cassidy at Epcot a few years ago, the same place I saw Davy Jones. I also saw Bobby Sherman (love of my life!) in concert in Nashville a few years back. The trick is...when you see them live, and you have lousy seats that are MILES from the stage, and you really don't have 20/20 vision anymore...well, they still look just like they did in 1969! Therefore, YOU look just like YOU did in 1969! Except with bigger boobs, a smaller waist, no freckles or pimples, and perfect teeth, of course!

I have heard more conversations about this show than any (including Lost and AI)in a long time. Apparently we're not the only ones who don't want to be reminded that we all age (some much more gracefully than others!)

Under the Influence said...

I knew they were going to be on, but I missed it! The Today Show is doing reunions all week. The Brady Bunch is going to be on, too. Or maybe they already were and I missed them, too!

I saw David Cassidy a couple years ago on Oprah and he has a BALD SPOT on the back of his head. I wish I hadn't seen that. It ruined so many memories.

Mommakin said...

Oh yes, we've discussed before that we are the same age, you and I. I, too, had dreams of marrying Keith. He was a player, sure, but I could bring him around with my true undying love. Unless Donny Osmond got to me first. Mine was a sort of fickle true undying love...

I like the reunions - sorta bummed I missed that one.

Do young girls need wrinkle cream? I guess it must be a precautionary measure. Smart move. As a young boy I should probably invest in some.

Maureen@IslandRoar said...

David Cassidy was the only person my sister wrote a fan letter too. I remember we waited anxiously for a response. She was 9. No response. His loss.

Laura Ingalls Gunn said...

David. Sigh. I saw the show too.
I'd like to think that he has lived harder than us so therefore we look better. :)

About a year or so ago, a lady who grew up a few houses down the street from me and who, of course, has known me all my life and also knew many people in my family too, told me at church one Sunday that everytime she sees me now, she sees me looking more and more like my Grandma! And, in my mind then, I pull up my memory snapshot of my Grandma and I begin to cringe thinking that I look like her because I knew her when she was between 64 and 82 years old and yes, she really always did look OLD, ya know. Then about a month ago, I saw a picture my daughter here had taken of me one night as I sat in my recliner working on some embroidery project or another and suddenly I saw that image too -that yes, I DO look like her now! The proof is in the pudding -or the photo in this case -and now, for some reason or other, guess I have accepted the whole thing and it doesn't bother me. Well, not as much anyway. It did kind of reinforce in me that appearances are not everything and to be happy that I'm still able to get around most of the time, and still sort of have some of my wits about me too. (Whatever is left of 'em anyway! LOL)
Sometimes though, it does take a bit of time to adjust to this aging crap, doesn't it?

gamommy2two said...

You're right. Those reunion shows are usually quite depressing...even if you didn't grow up in that era. To see how much people have aged is a real eye-opener! Quick! Where's my eye cream!?

Scrappy Girl said...

I never thought of it that way...thank God I can still look at Mario Lopez and think "He's still hot." I am sure my day is coming though...

That's why I frequently write my congressperson and ask them to forbid the passage of time using ironclad legislation. They never write back.

Rebekah said...

I find it kind of alarming that the celebrities my age don't seem to be aging as rapidly as I am and, in fact, their publicisits seem to be indicating that they're actually growing younger! Case in point: I'm pretty sure I'm the same age as Angelina Jolie. I used to read about her, see her age listed and think "Wow, we're the same age and she's done so much more than me. I've never been named a Goodwill Ambassador or won an Oscar. How depressing." But now when I read about her ambassador-ing and Oscar-winning, the tag about her age shows that she's grown two whole years younger than me. Hmmmmm. What is her secret?????

I missed that one! I think they are better preserved in the memory. You're right, just seeing they've aged only solidifies the fact that we have aged, too.

Only the heart-throbs age...not real people. ;-)

I am still here and reading faithfully. Just need to get better and leaving a comment! I wanted to see these reunions all weel on the Today show but missed them all so far. I am glad you posted this to remind me! I need to go You Tube the 8 is Enough crew to see how the aged too!!

I watched the Partridge Family as a kid but never had the crush on David Cassidy. The "love of my life" was Donny Osmond...talk about not aging with grace. :P

That is sure the truth. Reunion shows are also hazardous to your mind!! LOL!! Because what you remember and what you see just doesn't compute!!

Your article today goes along nicely with mine on Rudy Vallee. It's hard sometimes to look at people we have a younger image of--stars or not--and see them in an older light.

In the early 80s at the Texas state fair I recall seeing David Cassidy in a stage production of the George M Cohan musical LITTLE JOHNNY JONES. He was good and the show was entertaining, but I couldn't help but keep picturing him as the teen idol he had been. That was nearly 30 years ago, so now I guess he must be around 60?
Wow.

Yes, reunion shows are pretty much a reminder of how old I am, and I hate being reminded of that no matter the movie stars. I'm finding more and more the stars of my youth are aging far too quickly. It's rather depressing, in fact.

I too loved The Partridge Family--what a rockin' bus!

great show and music. the brady bunch was supposed to be doing the morning show circuit too, but that dang jan brady got all upset at marcia again. it's always about marcia, marcia, marcia. get over it , jan. you're so selfish.

sorry about my rant. i really wanted to the family together again. take care.

Morgan said...

I admittedly didn't grow up during that time but I watched every rerun as a child and thought he was dreamy too! :)

No doubt - they will never look the same way that you're remembering them in your head. Just skip the reunion and keep the memory alive!!

David Cassidy, Donny Osmond.. and for me - T.Rex! (Yes, I was a wild child.)

Perhaps they ought to scrap these reunions so that we all forget how old we're getting!

I loved the partridge family, great show back then, everyone drooled over David Cassidy lol, he was a pin up as they say..hehe great post.

Garden of Egan said...

Oh mercy! That's funny. I didn't see it, don't turn on the TV during the day at all. I think I didn't miss much.
Some people age better than others....David Cassidy isn't one of them.
I used to totally love him.

Barbaloot said...

Aged or not---I'm a sucker for reunion shows. Even if I never watched the original. When's the Brady Bunch reunion? Or Saved by the Bell?!

italianmamachef said...

Oh my, they have aged. I agree that there should not be any more reunion shows unless the stars look great! lol...Seriously, it's sad how the years have taken their toll of some of the stars of yesteryear. Alcohol, drugs and fast living catches up to them in an ugly way.

Together We Save said...

Oh my they have aged!! I don't think a reunion show would be a good idea for them. I think we all just want to remember them how they were!

I was wondering where Susan Dey was. I heard they tried a reunion several years ago, when she was on L.A. Law, and she basically said, "Not only no, but he** no!"

I was a pianist, and could never figure out how her fingers just stayed in one position on that little electric piano all the time. I assumed she was just far more advanced than I was.

P.S. Have you seen the episode of "Malcolm in the Middle" where David Cassidy plays an aging teen heartthrob? It. Is. Hysterical.

My favorite show was My Little Pony. They can't have a reunion of that show because all the horses were put down thanks to their age. That really doesn't bode well for me.

Melissa Marsh said...

I am too young to have known the Partridge family, but grew up with Growing Pains and The Cosby Show, etc. But as I look at the gray hair sprouting from my bangs, it starts to hit home that I really AM getting older.

jen@odbt said...

I still dream that the Karate Kid is going to come find me. Or the boys from The Outsiders. I don't like when some of my favorite teen crushes end up on a reality show. I'd like to keep them as I remember them.

Ellen said...

Oh Holy Cow! Well,....…We are about the same age...and let me tell you, every time I go to a reunion, of any type....I come away depressed...we should never attempt to see people we haven't seen for decades...it just isn't healthy....The Surgeon General should do something....smiles.

deb said...

I'm still waiting for a reply to the letters I wrote to David.

Thanks for these memories, I Think I Love You, Deb.

but the new pic, we have not aged like that one bit.

shortmama said...

Didnt anyone ever tell you that aging only happens on tv??

Sandy said...

I intended to watch it but got distracted before it came on. I remember the Partridge Family. I also remember they were patterned after the Cowsills which was a real family and who came from Newport....in my home state. Why that mattered to anyone is beyond me but it was often mentioned.

I've seen Danny Benaduce recently and if he's an indication of what the rest looked like, I don't mind that I missed it.

Allyson said...

Yes, well now you understand how I felt when I saw Jordan of New Kids on the Block fame again recently. Suffice it to say, it did not bode well for my self-esteem. I completely missed the Partridge Family era (not to say that I'm a spring chicken, I just watched more Mr. Ed and My Three Sons)...Plus I was a Brady Bunch fan and as I saw it, there were 2 camps of people: the Brady Bunch Camp and the Partridge Family Camp. I may have punched you in the face when we were younger. I would have done anything to protect Bobby....
And the Today Show is evil. It doesn't end until 11 and by then my husband is due home in 4 hours. If I want to "work from home" I have to accomplish more than possible in 4 hours.

Betty said...

Oh, I wish I could have seen that show! I LOVED David C.!! And your pic is so small, I can´t see it properly ´caus I´m so old I need glasses.... :))

Kathleen @ ForgingAhead said...

I refuse to believe that we age as fast as celebrities. That's the benefit of being non-famous - we don't age. Just like Dorian Grey.

...ummm, is it bad that I've never seen the partridge family? Nor have I ever used the term "groovy".

David Cassidy has so had plastic surgery....bad plastic surgery.

Hilarious! I am 36 and live in a Big Ten college town. Everyone here is about 12 (well, not really but this is how it seems) and I laughed out loud at myself the other day when I was trying to tell my hairdresser about Wham. She had no idea who they were so I told her this is where George Michael started. She then asked when Wham was around and I told her it was about 1985. "Oh," she said. "I was two." HA. HA. HA.

I get it is what I'm trying to say...

I know, I know. Ageing ......YIKES
I often wonder about, when people see me who haven't seen me for many years. if they are saying "wow, she isn't aging well is she"
I fear that
WHY??
is it vanity or just so very much I want to age as well as I can.
there are so many things we have NO control over.

Oh, those reunion shows can be very dangerous. I was doing some mental calculating in my head while driving today, and could not get over the fact that 1990 was twenty years ago. It's silly, I know, but it kind of freaked me out.

I've always wondered why I wasn't born with a God-given talent for singing, but, I digress. It is a little freaky to see the stars of yore in all their aging glory.

I did not see the Partridge Family on the Today Show and I am glad I did not. After all, I was only 11-15 years old during the first run of the show. Which means I'm a bit older now. Which means David Cassidy will NEVER fall in love with me. Boo Hoo!
