Well Gwyneth, I'll pass on the seeing you naked part, although that was a very kind offer. As a native Tennessean and a gal who has spent my entire life living in either Tennessee or North Carolina, at first I thought I should be offended by her remark. Then I realized that no one was probably holding a gun to herr head and forcing her to eat fried foods, white flour, and drink alcohol while she was in our state. We may have a bad diet but we are fairly well known for not being that rude. And truly, I bet you'd have to mainline lard to make that body of hers look pudgy.
I passed on being offended and decided to embrace Gwyneth's observation about my state. Truly, we southerner's do have our own unique way of enjoying the earth's bounty. And mostly, we do dip it in white flour and fry it up. You can't possibly think about the south without thinking about fried chicken. I would venture to say that a sizable portion of our school children here do not even realize chicken can be served any other way.
But we don't stop at chicken. Get near a body of water and you will find that anything that can be reeled in or snagged in a net can be deep fried. Fish, shrimp, oysters, crabs, clams - you name it and we will fry it. And serve it with a side of fried potatoes and fried hush puppies.
Want an appetizer? How about fried mushrooms, fried cheese, fried green tomatoes or even fried dill pickles? For a side dish, we can provide fried okra or fried carrots.
If we can't figure out how to bread it and fry it, we will just add enough fat to the pan to fry it that way - we are particularly fond of doing our greens that way. Yes, anything that has some nutritional value in it, we can eliminate by frying. We are very thorough. But where we really excel is in the dessert arena. Here we have learned how to deep fry oreos, candy bars, moon pies and even Twinkies.
It's a cholesterol fest every day in the south. But, you don't have to eat that way. I can't even remember the last time I ate something fried. But those foods sure are good in moderation.Moderation is what we don't have much of around here. So here's my tip. Travel to the south sometime and enjoy some of our delicious fried delicacies. There are so many I didn't list and some you don't even want to know about. But come enjoy, just like Gwyneth, and then go back home to your nutritionally sound diets.
And if you're looking for a career path for your son or daughter, our area could use a few good cardiologists.

Oh Gwyneth. She annoys me to no end.
I love it. And I'm sorry, but...."Gwyneth???....you look terrible. Sort of like a third world country survivor in which the people of the country look better. Go down to some really good malt shop and have a large one on me. And hey....I've been in Tennessee and I'd live there any time!"
Come on over to Philly, we've got some pretty unhealthy food habits too. Cheesesteak, anyone?
How could she have not eaten fried food before now?!?
You are soooo funny! Follwing you from FF!
Happy Day,

I've lived in the South most of my life but my mom's a Yankee (don't tell anyone, please!) so I didn't grow up with fried food and don't like it now.
My mom's family all came from the south. They were all fantastic cooks!!! But I refused trying "Red-eye gravy" or "Polk Salad". The gravy looked like grease with red food coloring. And I refuse to eat anything that the family jumps out of the car and picks along side the road. But other than that..southern cooking is the best!!!!
I love chicken. But I tend to always take the outside fried part off of it. Which I guess means I don't love fried chicken.
But I love the south. With all my heart.
Ellie
Oh Gwyeneth!!! What a pretty fool. Probably intended a plug for her show, doesn't she have some foodie thing with some famous chef?
people always ask me how i stay so slim, and ihave no idea, that's just the way it is...but...i never eat fried foods...my mum always gave me healthy food...so i guess she was right after all :)
maybe i should drop Gwyneth a line and invite her to my get fit program ...(it is coming). hello, that's what happens when you turn 40! (and no i haven't met her)
Funny stuff and wildly true. I remember being at a retreat in the south where the meals were served cafeteria style. I remember I ate salad every meal because I couldn't even stand the smell of all that Southern fried stuff.
Don't get me started on grits! I love corn but grits make me gag. The best use of corn meal is a very fine order of hush puppies lightly fried. Manna from heaven.
I hope to retire to the south coast of NC when I'm just a tad older. There's plenty of healthy food in the south. I visit every year so I know.
The south has the best cooks ever, and it sounds like Gwyneth figured that out. (She probably only gained about 5 pounds though!)
Now I want some of my mama's fried chicken! My mom and dad are both from Tennessee and my mom can fry chicken that is better than any I have ever tasted! I can't even make it as well as she does, though she taught me how to do it.
I grew up in Texas and we like to fry everything here, too. Chicken Fried Steak anyone?!
I don't eat fried foods often, but I've gotta have some on occasion.
And I have never known anyone in Tennessee or Texas that forced someone to eat anything.
She said the same thing about London exactly two years ago when she lived there--speaking about the fish and chips and how she loves anything fried.
I don't think many of these actresses eat much or if they do they do not enjoy it. I think it is just chat to appear tobe "just like us"!
I think I need to visit the south! Sounds like my kind of food fest! :)
So true! When I'm asked what my favorite food is I usually say anything fried! And a little extra weight on Gwyneth wouldn't hurt her.
mmm....we had a fish fry with all the trimmings when I last visited...yummers!!
We love to travel in the south and have BBQ and fried chicken til it's coming out our ears! Yum!
mmmmm...fried pickles!
Oh, and I thought Gwyneth was a vegan? She must have been eating all those fried veggies!
Oh! I dreamed about fried chicken last night. I must have been channelling your blog in my sleep!
I thought she did that whole raw diet crap?
I need to move to the South.
Lawdy...Lawdy....pass that fried chicken and some taters please....now, how bout some "nanner puddin"? I smile....love me some chicken made as the good Lord intended....(check out Price's Fried Chicken when in Charlotte next! you won't regret!)
And since it is Friday....wel,....don't even get me started on the Fish Camp by the river...please.....smiles.
HAHAHA. As if Gwyneth has a problem showing herself naked-and I think she meant her statement as a compliment. I'm not sure. But whatever...you can find fattening food anywhere; but maybe not as delicious.
There is pretty much nothing better than some good southern cooking. I'm pretty sure that Gwyneth's definition of being bad with food and alcohol is different than mine or else she wouldn't have been standing upright in that picture.
Ummm...now I am want a piece of that fried chicken RIGHT NOW. You wicked girl.
Considering we had fried pork chops for dinner last night and I have lived in GA or SC all of my life, I am loving this entry!
I have heard they even fry bacon down there...heh heh
Hilarious!
I love fried anything!....well, 'cept maybe liver.
It is lunch time and I have to choose between a healthful salad or running out and getting some of that delicious [pictured] fried chicken.
Okay. Bye, I'm off to get that chicken.
And Gwyneth? Get a life.
I don't like fried food.. or should I say, it doesn't agree with me.
It doesn't get better than a plate of fried something something. With a beer.
Clearly...she could afford to have a little fat added to her diet.
And, oh the fried Twinkies and Snickers bars. Wow. I know all too well.
But, have you ever tried a fried pickle? They are so.worth.it!
she annoys me....who talks about how good they look naked anyway? she needs to deep fry her ego :)
hubs and i are doing a cross country trip this summer and i have already started gathering food stops for all things southern! perhaps I should start gathering emergency room numbers as well?
I would love to have Gwyneth's problem!
I didn't consider her rude...just ignorant!! You are so right...no one forced her to eat fried foods. She opened her mouth and shoveled it in all by her little ole self.
Your list of fried delicacies sounded so good! Twinkies?? Oh my!
Hugs
SueAnn
i'm sure you heard of Paula Deen. She is one fine southern cook and fries some dishes.
You are right it's all about balance too much of anything is bad. Maybe even too much of Gwyneth might be bad but I wouldn't know.
Bring on the fried food!
And that is why I love the south.. I love some good fried food :)
I have found that people with so little body fat tend to also be short-stacked in the filter department. I don't blame them - if I go 2 hours without eating, I get pretty darn gripey, too.
Ahh, southern-fried anything. Sounds so goooood...
There is a place here that fries corn on the cob! I was shocked on that one! I just can't imagine. Poor Gwyneth, I feel so sorry for her don't you?
Happy weekend!
love the style of your blog, found you on friday follow, follow back!
http://adailydoseofdieting.blogspot.com/
can't wait to read MORE!!
Hehe. I'm a Southerner and everything that you listed for fried food, I've tried! So, I know where you're coming from. There's just something about it - yummmm... and darn... you've made me hungry!
Yum. I think.
I thought she was a health-food nazi. Goes to show you that carbs will make anyone crumble.
Ha! The only place I see food like this (besides fried chicken, I do see that) is at the state fair each year. Fried everything is reserved for the fair in these here parts.
But we do love us some butter.
Fried Twinkies just blow my mind.
having grown up in your neighboring state of Miss., I was a teen before I had a veg. that wasn't fied or cooked with bacon...
And I LOVE fied pickles!!
What? Gwyn -- sorry, GwynETH -- doesn't appreciate southern food? That girl's cheese done slipped off her cracker.
I am your newest friday follower. please stop by and check out my camera strap give away
Oh yum. Maybe I should move to the South...
Too much fried stuff! The South sounds like a warmer version of Scotland. They even do deep fried pizza.
Fried pickles are one of the best things ever. I hope gwyneth can't fit in any of her clothes and has to do one of those dumb cleanses those starlets do or something...
The only proper way to eat chicken and fish is fried.
Someone get Gwynnie an oreo or two.
I had a fried piece of chicken yesterday!! Yeah! :)
Whatever Gwyneth. I'm sure no one will notice that you went off you macrobiotic diet for a minute.
Funny stuf! haha!
I love chicken and the south!
Wishing you a great weekend!
B xx
Give me the fried pupu platter and I'll be as happy as a deep fried clam.
Mmmm... I could go for some fried cheese sticks right about now. I've never tried fried dill pickles but those sound pretty tasty too.
As for Gwyneth, I mean really, even if she ate fried food and white flour for the next year straight, she'd probably still be the size of one of my legs. Whatever.
and the fried dish comes with a vegetable: a lettuce leaf! sheeesh! Or was that a salad with a side of fried cheese?
My motto is: Everything tastes better when it's dipped in batter and deep fried.
So funny! I used to live in Memphis...but that doesn't mean I ate BBQ every day (well...when I was pregnant...maybe...) Hilarious!
I think it was her round about way of saying what a delicious time she had...
She is like a cold sore! She needs some chicken and dumplings on her size 0 frame!
Gwyneth does not look like she put anything fried pass her smell.
Now yes this sounds like cajun country. You make it, we'll fry it :) Dripping with oil. Paper towels are for wiping mouths not catching drips off fried foods.
Gwyneth needs to STFU,, she is annoying and only a so so actress...
There is nothing like Southern fried catfish and okra! My mouth is watering as I hit the keys! Everything in moderation!
I found you on Friday Follow and am now following you.

Oh my good heavens...I wanted to eat so many things in this post. I so wish I was one of those annoying people who say things like "I just don't like fried food" because really...HOW ON EARTH DO YOU NOT LIKE FRIED FOOD?
Loved the way you ended your post, too. Just plain hysterical!

Gwyneth can eat a ton of fried food in Los Angeles too :-)
Happy weekend Debbie.

Uh helloooo...KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN?? We KNOW how to fry up some food. And good heavens above, it is GOOD. In fact, I used to ONLY eat broccoli if it was fried and dipped in ketchup. But we also have other things in the south...we have beautiful landscape to run through (especially Nashville has some crazy hills...I'm specifically thinking PF Chang's Rock N' Roll Marathon in Nashville) and horse riding (very good for the inner thighs) and biking through horse farms. Girl coulda exercised any number of ways to work off the fried bounty.
Also? I think that's why southerners are so happy. We eat good. We may die young, but it's not all rabbit food on the journey there. I love that about the south.
Mmm ... fried chicken!
OH, but I miss a good catfish fry!!! Mmmmmm.
In Michigan, we have plenty of fatty foods and bad eating habits, but whenever I've been to the south, I've eaten some of the most wonderful foods in my entire life.
Fried food ... is just to die for!
LOL...mainlining lard? Hilarious.
Poor Gwyneth, since she started that dreadful Goop website, she cannot help but preach to the rest of us. Her body could probably use a little fat anyway.
Fried foods are all over the world. She could have eaten anything she wanted while in Tennessee. If she didn't want to eat anything fried, she should have just not eaten it.

A friend recently showed me a recipe for fried pickles. My first thought was "ugh" then I thought "I like fried zuchinni" ... I think I'd like to try some fried dill pickles. But so far, I'm still deprived of that experience. The End.
Tried fried pickles for the first time last month. I actually kind of liked them, much to my husband's amusement and my own dismay.
Thanks to your deep fried list, I am suddenly hungry and feel like a sweet tea is in my near future.
Tagged You!

LOL! I lived in Tennessee for a few years awhile back...deep fried pickles. AT first they scared me..but then this mid western Chicago girl developed a taste for them.Back in the midwest..not so easy to find them here! I think Gwenny could use a few months of fried food:)
LOL you are too funny and I sure miss our southern food back home - but, I actually just read something on Gwyneth yesterday that said she had to eat all of that stuff to gain weight for the role she was or is about to play in an upcoming movie. So maybe that's what she was referring to instead? I dunno. She's not and never has been one of my favorite actresses though nonetheless.
oh my gosh i have never even heard of a deep fried candy bar that is like the best news ever!!
you know, i'm a transplant. i live here, but i don't indulge in fried food often. i just don't LIKE it much, and my system definitely doesn't! my exceptions? this amazing buffalo chicken deep fried in a wonton from cheesecake factory...and fried pickle. yum!
When I lived in North Carolina, I tried more things friend than I'd ever had in my life. It was exciting! I live in South Dakota now, where we're all about the mashed potatoes and pot roast, but you're right. If you're down south and you can't find something fried? There's something wrong with you.
Ha - this is true!!! The south is definitely well known for some yummy fried foods!
Deep fried candy bars??? wow....is there no stop to you guys????
I love chicken. But I tend to always take the outside fried part off of it. Which I guess means I don't love fried chicken.
