Now Here's a Change

Starting today, I have a full-time part-time job.
You didn't expect me to have something normal, did you?
The school where I sub has a need for a full-time employee for 9 weeks and they have asked me to step in. Every day. 7:40 until 2:40.

How do you working people do it?
I have not worked daily in 20 years. Yes, 20 years. This is going to severely cut into my computer life. Not to mention the fact that I had no idea Kroger and Target were even open after 3:00 p.m. Who knew?Couple this with the fact that when my kids are on break, I am on break. Which means that no work has been done around my house since the second week of May. Nada. Zilch. You could write your name in the dust under my sofas. I'm not sure what is growing in the back of the refrigerator but it growled at me when I tried to throw it away yesterday so I'm leaving it there.I haven't had to be dressed well enough to be seen in public five days in a row in a very long time. I'm not even sure I have that many clothes. I may have to wear some inside out on alternating days.I'm nervous. Not about doing a good job. I'm cocky enough to think that won't be a problem. I'm nervous about not getting to take an afternoon nap. I'm worried that my family is going to want to eat dinner every night. I'm concerned that bills are going to need to be paid.

I can't wait to retire in 9 weeks.

This is hilarious! I started my full time job about four years ago, and went through the exact same thing! It's going to be weird for awhile, but I promise that you will survive (and so will the house!)

Best of luck!

Go you! I'll be at the retirement party. :o)

I totally understand. When my son went off to school, I thought it might be nice to go back to work, but I only wanted to work when I felt like it and I wanted it to pay tons of money. Unbelievably, no one offered me a job like that.

Good luck!!! I haven't had a "real" job in almost 10 years. Of course no one can afford what I'm really worth...so why bother???

good luck!!! :-)

I get nervous thinking of going back to work full time and I've only been out of work about a year and a half.

Good luck!!! I hope you survive without computer time (lol)! ;-)

Full-time work for 9 weeks? Shudder. I've gotten so used to my part-time gig, I'm not sure how I'd manage. Oh wait, that's a lie. It's only been a couple of years since I quit that full-time job. I still have nightmares.

The problem with teaching (and the huge perk) is summer. Every year I go through what you are going through. I'm so used to doing NOTHING and having the luxury of naps, recreational reading, and shopping that I go a little psycho when the school year hits.
I don't know how people work year round...that's crazy stuff.

I've decided I want to work again but only for part time. I do have a social life I need to keep up with. :)

I can't imagine. Will you get vacation time?

I told my husband I was permanently retired when our son was born 12 years ago. Although I do some part time stuff from home. Hey, money is money! :-)

I went from part-time subbing to a full time job.....now it's two years later and I still haven't caught up!

hahaha, you are hilarious! You will love your job so much, you´re not going to want to retire. :)

haha, community college is a much better option :) I work college student hours :) of course, if I were fulltime (aka when someone else dies...) then I'd get paid more...haha

As long as you can keep up with your blogging schedule, we'll be okay. ;)

Let the countdown begin! 9 weeks to go...

People who retire always say they don't know how they had time to get anything done when they were working. I think, honestly, having worked nonstop since graduating college 18 years ago, that working full-time gives you an excuse not to get things done! Like, you know, cleaning and such. Plus, I don't have kids...so I have plenty of time. I can retire in 13 years with half my salary so I'm working my booty off to get a writing career going so I can make up the difference (and hopefully have plenty left over to travel and enjoy life some, too!).

LOL...Congrats on your job. And here's counting the days til you can retire!

I haven't worked full time in almost 20 years too. I've only worked part time during those years. I think I would feel the same way you feel about it.

Hope it goes by quickly!

Kristina P. said...

Yeah, the afternoon nap thing would make me not take the job.

McVal said...

Good luck on your new job! You'll do great! As long as you don't wear those jeans...

Fragrant Liar said...

What? We can only hope your family does NOT want to eat dinner every night. I mean, come on! But congrats on the short-term gig. Could be worse. Could be the never-ending gig. All in all, you're coming off easy, methinks.

DeNae said...

Yep. I get this 100%. It's why I teach piano lessons in my home and attempt to eke out a living as a writer; the thought of having to be up and somewhere every day - sporting mascara and making lucid conversation, no less - just gives me the bends.

This is why I work at home!! Love showing up in my pj's! I sure hope you survive this shock to your system! I mean, seriously!!?? Love the wearing clothes inside out...good one!! Ha!

Good luck with your 9 week career. You can do it!

I couldn't. But I have full confidence in YOU!

As long as you keep on reading MY blog, I'm ok with this change. HOWEVER, if'n I notice you being overly absent, there's gonna be hell to pay!

I definitely don't have enough clothes for 5 days of work! Good luck on that!

Counselormama said...

Oh, man that is a change! I am recently unemployed and am getting used to it rather quickly! You could take a short nap if you went straight home, right?

deb said...

I love you Deb
Here's to an early retirement!!

Frances said...

Hubby used to sub, so I will just give you condolences that you have to do that job at all. (Unless, your schools are vastly different from ours.)

I wish I could retire...or work part time....alas I have to keep working full time, since I am the only one in our family that does. And we like to eat.

And not live in a ditch.

Garden of Egan said...

Hilarious! I think the insideout clothes will rock.
Good luck and I'll pray for you until your retirement.

gayle said...

School/work started back for me last Tuesday!! Wish I could stop in 9 weeks:))) I totally understand! You must be a great sub if that asked you to do the job!!

TechnoBabe said...

I hope you enjoy the working experience and all the take out food that will use up the extra money you will be making. Ha. this is really pretty funny. Are you going to have a retirement party at the end of the nine weeks?

Sara @ Domestically Challenged said...

No way! Don't retire! I will let you come in for me after your 9 weeks are up.

ModernMom said...

LOL I love it! Start planning that retirement party now!

Karen@StrictlySimpleStyle said...

Good luck! I'm pretty sure you can handle it knowing that it's only temporary. I worked part time for a few years and still had trouble keeping up with the house and kiddies. I applaud all women who can manage everything.

Mom said...

Good luck! Working at a school, you'll be damn good and ready to retire in that amount of time. I know I will be when my school year hits 9 weeks!

Life...EXAGGERATED

Heather said...

Good Luck! I know for a fact that the dust will wait until you "retire". I also know that children can survive for days at a time on cheerios, bagel bites, and plain pasta. Even big children, like your husband!

Kim said...

Should I be sending congratulations or condolences? :)
And don't worry about the house. Unfortunately, it ain't going nowhere and everything will be right where you (or the kids) left it when you come up for air in nine weeks.
P.S. Take-out is your friend!

Nice work. I bet you'll get into the swing og things quickly.

Jeni said...

I haven't worked now in almost 8 years and right now, the way things are, I have problems getting myself awake, showered, dressed, etc., in time to make it to church one day of the week and frequently, can't even manage to do that! I think back on the hours I used to work, things that I used to be able to do back then too and wonder what the hell happened to that person who used to be me?

C.Mom said...

You will be great! you will be tired...and some days you will have to cut yourself a break for not getting everything done, but the 9 weeks will fly by! I however, am starting the new school year--for a whole year--and apart from the excitement of a new year, new challenges, am dreading not having time to myself- for a year. Will be excited to hear how it goes!

Krystyn said...

You'll do great! And, I bet it will be a nice change for you!

Kristy said...

I bet at the end of it, you will appreciate your time a whole lot! That will be one of the upsides of it.

♥Georgie♥ said...

LOL...i think you said it best when you said your kids have been on break and you have been on break....that is the beauty of subbing....the breaks....cant wait for you to retire in 9weeks

shortmama said...

I cant even imagine working right now. I havent worked at all in almost 7 years...feels like 30

Pam said...

You are wise to realize how difficult it is to work full-time. I had two part time jobs for 6 months and finally had to quit one - for all the reasons you state here. It was just too much. Hats off to all those moms who work full time. I bow down to you. And Happy Upcoming Retirement to you! You deserve it!

Angelia Sims said...

Happy working! Wow, after twenty years, it sounds like you are doing great!

In my case, stuff just doesn't get done. I'm numb to it now. You'll adjust! :-D

wendy said...

Sounds cool....after all it's only 9 weeks.
and your family expecting dinner overnight....ADJUST

my kids grew up on frenchfries and applesauce.

It is kinda fun to have a reason to get dressed up in the morning.
I used to work full time at a court house, married, retired, now even a bra seems optional

Don't sweat it. Since it's only 9 weeks, you'll always have light at the end of the tunnel.

Where I used to work there was no such thing as temporary employment. Once hired on for a short stint people never left. They would stay "temporary employees" for years and years. Watch out! They might getcha. Enjoy the extra cash.

LOL! You are lucky indeed that you don't have to work and juggle kids, work, home, food...

Oy I'm feelin it. I dont know what I'll do when I have to return to the real world. Hubs wont let me talk him into another adoption so I've only got another 10 years to be a stay at home mom. Sigh.
